A Disaster in Mellowtown
Hello ! This is Kairi from WLAG radio reporting you about an accident that happened with a truck carrying chickens. The accident took place  in Mellowtown, at the intersection of Main Street and Broadway about 12.30. A chicken farmer was driving his chickens to a market , when by unknown reason he made an accident. Tom Phillips, the chicken farmer, said that he was driving slowly and carefully as always, but suddenly the truck started to make strange noise and he could not control it any more. Then he crashed. As a result the crates, where the chickens were held , went to pieces and chickens broke free. At the moment there is a real chaos in the middle on Mellowtown, chickens everywhere and pieces of the crates also. And what's worst, as there is worldwide bird flu epidemic, people are frightened maybe some of the chickens are diseased and that they could catch the infection. All the citizens look shocked.
I asked local police officer Arthur Brown to comment what had happened. He said it is early to answer. He is still investigating, but he added that it seems that the farmer had been careless, because the load wasn’t secured properly. Officer Brown said that the main priority at the moment is to clean up the mess and to catch all the chickens before they make more damage.
I caught a witness, a photographer Jane Lens , who was at the scene when it all happened. I asked her, why did the accident happen, she said that the farmer was obviously driving too fast .  And she also made a photo to confirm that. Next witness I caught was Amanda Doogood, the Mellowtown librarian, who told that truck driver were driving absolutely too fast. Another eyewitness was a window washer Juan Sanchez, who was cleaning the windows . I asked also his comment, he said that he was washing windows and he did not saw why truck crashed. As window washer did not noticed something I caught another witness, a student at Mellowtown High School Dick Learner and his dog Spot who went crazy. Dick Learner said that truck was driving too fast and crates on top were moving, so in his point of view truck driver did not lock crates right on the back of his truck. Dirk Wood , who is a carpenter , told me that he did not see the accident but right now is more important to catch all the chickens as soon as possible. I caught another witness John Burke , who is a retired teacher walking with his granddaughter Cindy Burke. Mr. Burke told that he did not saw this accident well, but he thinks that it was truck driver fault . Next I found witnesses in front of cafe . There were a bank manager , who was waiting for his coffee , Philip Scott , a waiter Francois Rimbaud and Mavis Biggles, who is a waitress in that cafe. They told me that first some crates on the top fell down and then truck driver hit brakes and made an accident. Philip Scott added that chickens might be diseased and that people could catch the infection, but Mavis Biggles did not agree with that idea , because truck driver was on the way to market to sell all his birds . I left these two there to argue and found another witness Lee Post, a letter carrier , was really in shock and he told me only impolite words about truck driver, so as I understood, he thought also that it was truck drivers fault. I needed to find someone who could comment what happened and then I found perfect eyewitnesses, a couple on vacation, Tyrone and Shaniqua Silver who told me that they saw everything - truck driver were driving too fast and as load wasn’t secured properly, crates on top fell down and truck driver stopped immediately.
I would love to say thank you to all the witnesses and now is priority number one to catch all the chickens and take them to doctor to find out where they were bird flu or not. Thing we could all study from this accident, is that speeding never gets you far, better to act slowly than to deal with the consequences . This was Kairi from WLAG radio reporting you about an accident that happened in Mellowtown with a truck carrying chickens. Have a nice day and drive carefully!

A lamb to the slaughter

Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl (1916-1990) The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight - hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the sideboard behind her, two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey. Fresh ice cubes in the Thermos bucket. Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come him (correction: home) from work. Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come. There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did. The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil. Her skin - for this was her sixth month with child - had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen, and a few moments later, punctually as always, she hear

You saved my life. Acknowledgments My deepest gratitude to my editor, Hilary Sares, who really dug into this story and made me work for it. Basically, she kicked my ass.
