Blackpool Dance Festival

Introduction

I´m going to talk about a famous annual ballroom dance competition. I chose this subject because I have always admired their dresses, because these are always different and very sparkling. This competition is also well- known all over the world.

Blackpool

The festival takes place in Blackpool. A seaside city in the north - west of England . The population of this town is 142 900. The headquarters of an outstanding British sports car manufacturer TVR are also located in Blackpool. The biggest income of this town is based on tourism industry. The highest peak in tourism was from 1900 to 1950 when the beach and promenade was full of crowds. An interesting fact is that reputedly the town still has more hotel and B&B beds than the whole of Portugal. This town is visited approximately by 10 million visitors every year , during the heyday there were 17 million visitors.
The most popular sights in Blackpool are: the three piers (North, Central and South ), the Blackpool tower (inspired by the Eiffel tower in Paris ), Pleasure Beach Blackpool (an amusement park), Stanley Park (a historic park and sporting area) and the Winter Gardens (a large entertainment and conference venue in the town centre).
Blackpool is also known for its welcoming attitude towards gay people. The gay pride was first held there in 2006. Currently there are many pubs, bars , nightclubs and radio stations for gay people.
I recognised one person from the Notable People section and this was Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of John Lennon, who was born in Blackpool.

Empress Ballroom

Empress Ballroom is situated in the Winter Gardens and it is very widely used. For example conferences, dance competitions and music concerts. It was built in 1896 and it can find room for up to 3000 people.

History of the Festival

The festival was first held in 1920 and the man behind this idea was either Mr Harry Wood or Mr. Nelson Sharples. The first festival was held in the Empress Ballroom in the Winter Gardens and was consecrated to three competitions in three tempos : Waltz , Two Step and Foxtrot.
In 1950 the Winter Garden Company decided to hold an Old Time Ball which was considered to be the first Blackpool Sequence Dance Festival.
The major change in the history of the festival was the introduction of Latin American dancing in 1961. Three years later after many successful events it was upgraded to Championship status . The event with the biggest crowd appeal is the annual Professional Invitation Team Match which was first held in 1968.
The largest numbers of contestants come from Japan , Germany , Italy and the USA, which sometimes upsets the Englishmen who would like to see more contestants from their nationality .
There have been 8 main organizers to the festival. Currently the position belongs to Mrs Sandra Wilson.

The Festival Nowadays

There are 5 dance festivals held in Blackpool all together. These are the Blackpool Dance Festival, Freestyle Dance Championship, the Sequence Dance Festival, the British National Dance Festival and Junior Dance Festival. The first 4 are held in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens and the last in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
The Blackpool Dance Festival is considered the largest of the five festivals I mentioned before . Last year 68 countries participated. The festival takes place during 9 days and it includes Ballroom and Latin American dancing.

The Dances

Now briefly about the dances. The international standard dances are Slow Waltz, Tango , Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep. And the international Latin dances are Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive .

The Estonians

Now I would like to point out some Estonians and their places. The most successful are Aleksander Makarov and Katrin End who have reached to the second place as the highest. Kristi Boyce-End, an Estonian married to an Englishman, is competing for England. She and Warren Boyce have been 4th twice and this year they were 6th. Andres End and Liis End, brother and sister , claimed their highest place in this festival last year when they reached 18th place.

This Year

About the latest festival held from 21st to 29th of May 2009. The festival hosted the contestants in the Empress Ballroom and there were 24 events all together. The ticket price was near 27 pounds which is about 500 kroons. This year Estonia was represented by Kaisa Oja and Martin Parmas. Unfortunately they didn´t reach very high, they were 155th.

Conclusion

In conclusion I would like to highlight some facts like that the Blackpool Dance Festival is widely acknowledged all over the world and considered as one of the most important events by the contestants. Then the 89 years long history of the festival and lastly the considerable number of Estonians who have succeeded in getting a good place in that festival.

Thank you for your attention . Do you have any questions ?

Just as July becomes August, the seaside town of Haapsalu will host a grand spectacle of rural Estonian entertainment. The White Lady Days is a summer celebration filled with amusement for all the family. Held in and around the remains of the Teutonic-knights-era castles, the fair combines enchanting medieval legends with modern countryside charm to create a comprehensive experience of Estonia beyond the big cities. But the legend of the White Lady of Haapsalu, which is at the heart of the festival, is perhaps the most famous tall tale of the many that are so abundant in Estonia's folklore. It is the story of a poor girl who falls in love with the son of the village elder, and disguises herself as a choirboy in order to sneak into the castle. But, alas, the lord of the manor's son discovers the deception. He is overcome by jealous rage and orders his men to seal the girl inside the thick stone walls while still alive. Turned into an incarnation

Japanese festivals

Japanese festivals Japanese festivals are traditional festive occasions. Some festivals have their roots in Chinese festivals but have undergone dramatic changes as they mixed with local customs. Some are so different that they do not even remotely resemble the original festival despite sharing the same name and date. There are also various local festivals (e.g. Tobata Gion) that are mostly unknown outside a given prefecture. It is commonly said that you will always find a festival somewhere in Japan. Matsuri is the Japanese word for a festival or holiday. In Japan, festivals are usually sponsored by a local shrine or temple, though they can be secular. There is no specific matsuri days for all of Japan; dates vary from area to area, and even

Imperial rule. Supposedly built on the grave of a legendary Estonian hero, Kalevipoeg, on the city's mighty Toompea Hill, the Orthodox cathedral was something of a Russian propaganda exercise at the time and still remains a subject of controversy amongst hardline patriots. Most locals though are content to admire the Alexander Nevsky as the fine piece of architecture. http://www.tallinn-life.com/culture/culture_details/103-Alexander_Nevsky_Cathedral The Song Festival Grounds The tradition of the song festival was born along with Estonian national awakening.
