The UK

K Different Parts The United Kingdom is a short way of saying the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The UK is the political name for those countries which share a parliament in London. All of them were at one time independent kingdoms with their own monarch. Now they are all part of the same kingdom and share the same monarch. The UK consists of Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. The peoples of these countries are British subjects; they hold British passports and therefore their nationality is British. The british Isles is the geographical name for all the islands off the west coast of Europe. These islands also include The Republic of Ireland, which is politically independent of the Britsh government. Many people refer to the inhabitants of the British isles as 'the English', but England is only one of the countries. The other countries are Scotla...

Briti kirjanduse portfoolio

Charles Dickens Charles John Huffam Dickens was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Considered one of the English language's greatest writers, he was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth in Hampshire, the second of eight children to John Dickens n 7 February 1812. The 12-year-old Dickens began working ten hour days in a Warren's boot-blacking factory. In May 1827, Dickens began work in the office of Ellis and Blackmore as a law clerk. At the age of seventeen, he became a court stenographer and, in 1830, met his first love, Maria Beadnell. Maria's parents disapproved of the courtship and effectively ended the relationship when they sent her to school in Paris. In 1834, Dickens became a political journalist, reporting on pa...

Veracruz Spilling from the slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental to the Hulf of Mexixo, the state of Veracruz froms a 450-mile-long crescent.Since Spanish colonial times the harbor at the city of Veracruz has been the point of entry for diverse cultures either staging invasions or seeking a share in the state's abundant resources.these newcomers Spaniards, Africans, Greeks, Italians and Cubans blended with the indigenous people to create a mélange of traditions that are unique to Veracruz. Long before Cortes these tropical lowlands wwewe the domain of the Olmec,Mesoamerica's oldest civikization, which rose to prominence 3,000 years ago, developing religious ideas, mathematical concepts and a calendar system that would be adopted later by the Maya and Aztec. Teater NO99

It is the most modern theatre I think and the plays are also most startling and astonishing, compare to other theatres in Estonia. It began to operate in February 2005, so it is one of the youngest theatres in Estonia. Probably that's why it is very different from the others and its repertoire is more contemporary then classical. Their first play what "Sometimes you feel that life will end and there hasn't been any love". The theatre also organizes so called one-time "actions", in which you can't be certain if it's going to be a success of failure, because the ideas are somewhat crazy. It has two theatre halls, but their plays have been staged in the open air as well. For example one time in an old swimming pool and also in three abandoned airplane hangars. Their imagination has no boundaries. The theatre's artistic director is Tiit Ojasoo, and Ene-Liis Semper is the chief stage designer- director. The troupe consists of 10 actors, eight men and two women. The best known and also my favorites are Mirtel Pohla and Rasmus Kalju...

Christmas

It's a global time of peace for all who believe in the magic of it. Overworked people treasure days that bring rest and recreation and allow them to meet their families and friends. They appreciate days when they give and receive gifts - the evidence of friendship, of remembrance and love. A time when it feels good to give, when anger is forgotten, when heaven becomes a place on earth for a moment. We tend to think of Christmas as a time for children, but what if Christmas gives each of us the opportunity to be the child? To have wise men bring priceless gifts to us, to be held by an adoring mother and father, to feel that everything will be okay...forever. What if Christmas is a chance to start fresh? A clean slate. Instead of New Year resolutions, we could give the world our brand new selves. We could leave behind the mistakes, the regret and the hurtful words, all of it. Surely Christmas is a perfect time to start over, to make changes that matter and to turn our lives around. People celebrate Christmas differently from one to another. For example, my family celebrates Christmas by having a Christmas tree and decorating it. We also exchange gifts, sometimes go to church, and cook a big dinner, a really big dinner. But I must say that when we do all these things, we don't keep in mind the true meaning of Christmas - celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is one of the biggest celebrations for all Christians. However, it would be wrong to assume that it is only celebrated among Christians. With the world be...

Scotland

klass 2008 Etymology Scotland is from the Latin Scoti, the term applied to Gaels. The Late Latin word Scotia (land of the Gaels) was initially used to refer to Ireland. By the 11th century at the latest, Scotia was being used to refer to (Gaelic-speaking) Scotland north of the river Forth, alongside Albania or Albany, both derived from the Gaelic Alba. The use of the words Scots and Scotland to encompass all of what is now Scotland became common in the Late Middle Ages. History Repeated glaciations, which covered the entire land-mass of modern Scotland, have destroyed any traces of human habitation that may have existed before the Mesolithic period. It is believed that the first post-glacial groups of hunter-gatherers arrived in Scotland around 12,800 years ago, as the ice sheet retreated after the last glaciation. Groups of settlers began building the first known permanen...

Emergency situatsions, in case of fire

However, you must already know how to use one, to be effective and timely enough for it to count. Keep yours in your kitchen, near enough to get to it quick, but not too close to the fire to reach it. Check it regurally to insure it would work properly if needed. · In the event of a larger fire, announce "FIRE!" loudly to everyone and gather all the people immediately and ask them to go out of the house via the nearest safe door or window. Do not re-enter the home! · If you are inside and don't know if there is fire on the other side of a door, test the door before you open it. To do this, kneel down to stay under the smoke levels. Reach up around half way up the door, and touch the door with the back of your hand. If there's a fire o...

Connecting Ideas Logically and Effectively

If this stage of the production process is done properly all you really need are the language control techniques to connect your ideas logically and effectively. If you have a well documented list of techniques to connect your ideas effectively the writing process is less formidable. You will want to know how to join similarities, compare and contrast certain facts, introduce the next topic, offer a supporting idea, or refer to previously presented facts. You will also need to know how to present different shades of argument to produce logically a recommendation you wish to make. This requires an ability to emphasise certain facts and 'bury' others. However, all facts need to be linked to give a logical flow. This unit will give you language practice in this important aspect of producing written documents. Evaluation Exercise 1 Connectives Study the following two versions of the same text and decide which do you find easier to read and why? what is the difference between them? When the ICN equipment was first introduced, it was found to provide a flexible and advanced system. Its speed of operation was greater than comparable hardware then available. In recent months major faults have developed in the equipment. The local agent appears incapable of providing a reliable repair service. The system is regularly out of order for several days at a time. The makers have agreed to replace the system free of charge. The new equipment will not be installed for at least six months. Such a delay is clearly unacceptable to us. We should insist that ICN send their own engin...

Hiina

Since the 1990s, SEZs and similar concepts have been expanded to major Chinese cities, including Shanghai and Beijing. The result has been a 6-fold increase of GDP since 1978. Chinese economic development is among the fastest in the world, and has been growing at an average annual GDP rate of 9.4% for the past 25 years.[57] At the end of 2005, the PRC became the fourth largest economy in the world by exchange rate, and the second largest in the world after the United States by purchasing power parity at US$8,158 trillion.[58] But with its large population this still gives an average GDP per person of only an estimated US$8,000 (2006), about 15th that of the United States. Mainland China has a reputation as being a low-cost manufacturer, which caused notable disputes in global markets. This is largely because Chinese corporations can produce many products far more cheaply than other parts of Asia or Latin America, and because expensive products produced in developed countries like the United States are in large part uncompetitive compared to European or Asian goods. Another factor is the unfavorable exchange rate between the Chinese yuan and the United States dollar to which it was pegged. On July 21, 2005 the People's Bank of China announced that it would move to a floating peg, allowing its currency to move against the United States dollar by 0.5% (effective 18 May 2007, which was earlier 0.3%) a day, while 3% a day against other currencies.[59] Many high-tech American companies have difficulty exporting to China because of U.S. federal government restrictions, which exacerbated the trade gap between the PRC and the US, widespread software piracy and illegal copying of intellectual property (a major US export), and perceived low quality of US goods. On the other hand, China runs a trade deficit with Taiwan and...
