The UK

The Angles, Saxons and Jutes began to settle from the sixth to the eighth centuries, and the Angles gave England its name. These invaders introduced a new culture to Britain, and even today British customs and habits are described as 'Anglo-Saxon'. Anglo-Saxon England was one of the most civilised countries in Europe, with organised systems of agriculture and trade. The Vikings ca me from Scandinavia in the tenth eentury; they settled in the north and made the town of York the capital of their kingdom. The last successful invasion of Britain was in 1066, which is an important date in history books in British schools. Duke William of Normandy (William the Conqueror) defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings, and the Normans and the French settled in Britain over the next three centuries. French became the language of the nobility and, with Latin, the language of the legal system and of government....

Scotland

Another view places emphasis on the Battle of Dunnichen, and the reign of Bridei m. Beli (671693), with another period of consolidation in the reign of engus mac Fergusa (732761). The Kingdom of the Picts as it was in the early 8th century, when Bede was writing, was largely the same as the kingdom of the Scots in the reign of Alexander (11071124). However, by the tenth century, the Pictish kingdom was dominated by what we can recognise as Gaelic culture, and had developed an Irish conquest myth around the ancestor of the contemporary royal dynasty, Cined mac Ailpn (Kenneth MacAlpin). From a base of territory in eastern Scotland north of the River Forth and south of the River Oykel, the kingdom acquired control of the lands lying to the north and south. By the 12th century, the kings of Alba had added to their territories the...

The Inchcape Rock

He wanted to "plague" the Abbot of Aberbrothok, so no man would ever thank him again. "The boat is lower'd, the boatmen row, / And to the Inchcape Rock they go; / Sir Ralph bent over from the boat, / And he cut the Bell from the Inchcape float." This stanza is quite literal, it does not take a genius to understand what it is about - the sailors take the evil man to the buoy and he cuts the Bell free. In the tenth stanza, Sir Ralph the Rover lets the bell sink to the depths of the ocean- "Down sunk the Bell with a gurgling sound. / The bubbles rose and burst around;". He then enviously and with malice says that the next man who comes to the Rock, will not thank the Abbot (because his ship will crash the Rock and he will die in a very painful manner). In this stanza, Southey takes the gut-feeling of something bad happening to the next level, by describing the bubbles that appear after...

Topic - Estonia

The most important branches also include machinery and equipment. Paper and timber industries also employ many workers. Paper was first produced in Estonia in 1677 and it has retained its important role. Estonian furniture industry also has a long tradition. The electronics industry is one of the most promising branches in Estonia and the service sector has rapidly expanded . One tenth of the population receives income from agriculture, fishery and forestry. Food industry is largely based on local agriculture, although there has been a decrease in the importance of it lately. The reason is that farmers lack finances to modernize machinery and the increase in labour productivity has been limited. The production of milk and meat products is the main branch. In the countryside people breed dairy cattle, raise pigs and grow grain, potatoes and vegetables...

Image of Brazil

5% are Asian, about 1 million; and 0.4% are Amerindian, about 519,000. Most native peoples who live and lived within Brazil's current borders are thought to descend from the first wave of migrants from North Asia (Siberia) that crossed the Bering Land Bridge at the end of the last Ice Age around 9000 BC. In 1500 AD, the territory of modern Brazil had an estimated total population of nearly 3 million Amerindians divided in 2,000 nations and tribes. Brazil is the world's tenth largest economy at market exchange rates and the ninth largest in purchasing power. Economic reforms have given the country new international projection. It is a founding member of the United Nations and the Union of South American Nations. A predominantly Roman Catholic, Portuguese-speaking, and multiethnic society, Brazil is also home to a diversity of wildlife, natural environments, and extensive natural resources in a variety of protected habitats....

Christopher Columbus

During this time Columbus tried to interest the kings of France and England in his plans. They were not interested either. Then, in the summer of 1492, Queen Isabella suddenly agreed to finance the plan. If Columbus succeeded in reaching the East, he was to receive the Spanish noble title of don. He would also become admiral and ruler of all the lands discovered, and he would be entitled to one tenth of gold, silver, gems and spices found there. The tiny fleet consisted of three ships. Columbus himself commanded the flagship, the Santa Maria. She carried a crew of 40 men. The two other ships, the Niña and the Pinta, were smaller and together they had the crews of 50 men. Expect for four of the crewmen and Columbus himself all the men who made the voyage were Spaniards. Columbus' fleet set sail from Palos on August 3, 1492. On August 12 they reached the Canary Islands...

Canada

Canada is a very large country. It is over 600,000 sq kilometers larger than the United States. Over 5,000 km of border separate Canada and the United States. Canada does not have nearly as many people as the United States, it has only a tenth as many. Its climate helps to explain why there are so few people in so big land. The northern part of Canada is called Eskimo land and there are very cold winters. Only in the southern part and the west coast is the climate as mild as in the western part of the United States. During the Ice Age almost all of Canada was covered time after time whit great sheets of ice. These sheets carried away much of Canada's soil to the United States. Parts of Canada were first settled by the French, part of it by the English. Picturesque Quebec is the most French, of Canada's big cities. Canada's largest city, Montrea...

Magazine article on what your life will be like in ten years

1.what are you doing now? 2.how do you see yourself changing in the next few years? 3.what will you be doind 4.what will you have done? 5.where will you be living 6.will you have got married? 7.will you have travelled a lot? Everybody has their dreams and ideas, how they want they're life to be. Right now I am a school student. I'm dancing, playing guitar and just hang out with my friends. I'm in the tenth grade of high-school, so I have only two years to decide what I want to do after graduating. But I think I don't really want to study anything more, I just want to see what the life has for me. The First three years would be the hardest. Maybe I'm going to change my mind, and go to university. But I've got a plan, and a good one. To just slowly start to open my own busyness. Nobody really believes in that, neither do I. But to do anything at all, you first have to dream about it, that...

Tšernobõl, Chernobyl

Intense steam generation then spread throughout the whole core causing a steam explosion and releasing fallout to the atmosphere. The second explosion threw out fragments from the fuel channels and hot graphite. The graphite and fuel started a number of fires, causing the main release of radioactivity into the environment. From the second to tenth day after the accident, some 5000 tonnes of boron, dolomite, sand, clay and lead were dropped on to the burning core by helicopter in an effort to extinguish the blaze and limit the release of radioactive particles. Immediate impact Most of the released gases and fallouts were deposited close by as dust and debris, but the lighter material was carried by wind over the Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and to some extent over Scandinavia and Europe....
