Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, a port city in Italy , in 1451. This is the name we know him by today but his actual name is Cristobal Colon in Spanish , or Cristofero Colombo in Italian. He first went to sea at the age of 1465 at the age of 14. He was a deck boy and he had to clean , cook and mend clothes.

By the age of 30 he was an experienced sailor and a skilful navigator. He had made many journeys to the South Atlantic from his home the Madeira Islands . He also sailed to Bristol and Galway. Many people believed that he had also sailed to the north of Iceland in 1477.

During those visits Columbus heard stories about life to the west of Europe . His ambition to find the shortest and safest sea route to the riches of the Far East started to grow . Gradually he worked out his plan to reach the East by sailing west.

In 1482 Columbus tried to interest the Portugese king , Joao III, in his journey . The Portugese king had tried to find a route to the Indies from the east for a long time. Columbus explained that he believed he could reach the Indies from the west. In 1483 the Portugese king told Columbus that he would not pay for the journey because he did not believe that Columbus could find the Indies from the west.
Columbus decided to ask the joint rulers of Spain , King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castille, if they would pay for the journey. They met Columbus and said that they would look at his plans with their own navigators. In 1490 the Spanish navigators told the King and Queen that they thought Columbus had made some mistakes with his plans and they should not agree to the journey.
During this time Columbus tried to interest the kings of France and England in his plans. They were not interested either. Then, in the summer of 1492, Queen Isabella suddenly agreed to finance the plan. If Columbus succeeded in reaching the East, he was to receive the Spanish noble title of don. He would also become admiral and ruler of all the lands discovered , and he would be entitled to one tenth of gold , silver , gems and spices found there .
The tiny fleet consisted of three ships. Columbus himself commanded the flagship, the Santa Maria. She carried a crew of 40 men. The two other ships, the Niña and the Pinta , were smaller and together they had the crews of 50 men. Expect for four of the crewmen – and Columbus himself – all the men who made the voyage were Spaniards.
Columbus’ fleet set sail from Palos on August 3, 1492. On August 12 they reached the Canary Islands. There they stopped for almost a month because the ships needed to be repaired and they also took on fresh supplies.
At long last, before the dawn on October 12, 1492, the lookout on the Pinta sighted land . They had reached the Bahama Islands. Although they believed it was Asia , they had found the New World!
They landed on a little island that Columbus named San Salvador and took possession of it for the King and Queen of Spain. Several days later the ships sailed on.
After stopping at various other islands in the Bahamas , the fleet reached Cuba and a month later – Haiti . On Christmas Eve the Santa Maria ran on rocks on the northern coast of Haiti and it was impossible to use her again . Columbus Left her grew with instructions to build a colony there and set sail for Spain on Niña.
The voyage home was a rough one, and Columbus did not reach Spain until March 1493 . He was received by the King and Queen a month later. He gave them the birds , plants and six Indians he had brought back with him as well as what little gold he had obtained. The rulers were pleased with Columbus’ gifts and with his tales of discovery.
A second voyage started on September 25, 1493. Columbus found some gold on his return to Haiti and he discovered Jamaica and Puerto Rico. He made two more voyages to the New World – 1498 and 1502 – but he never found the riches of his dreams and he never received the reward he had been promised.
Christopher Columbus died in 1506, as a sad and bitter man.

He didn't get to go to school very much, but he learned to read and write Spanish during his travels. He also taught himself Latin because all the geography books were written in Latin. He was a navigator, colonizer and explorer. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship. He tried for eight years to get King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to supply him with ships and money. Finally they agreed. In 1492 Christopher left from Spain with a crew of 90 men and a fleet of three ships. His three ships were called the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. There were 24 men on the Niña, 26 men on the Pinta, and 40 men on the Santa María. The Niña and the Pinta were caravels. The Santa María was a larger and slower-sailing supply ship. They left Spain on August 3, 1492. They made one stop, then sailed on toward the west. Two days later they saw land; an island Columbus named San Salvador.

Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus, Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella Regarding the Fourth Voyage (1503) [Jamaica, July 7, 1503] Of Española, Paria, and the other lands, I never think without weeping. I believed that their example would have been to the profit of others; on the contrary, they are in an exhausted state; although they are not dead, the infirmity is incurable or very extensive; let him who brought them to this state come now with the remedy if he can or if he knows it; in destruction, everyone is an adept. It was always the custom to give thanks and promotion to him who imperiled his person. It is not just that he who has been so hostile to this undertaking should enjoy its fruits or that his children should. Those who left the Indies, flying from toils and speaking evil of the matter and of me, have returned with official employment. So it has now been ordained in the case of Veragua. It is an ill example and without
