Jane Austen " Pride & Prejudice "
Pride and Prejudice, first published on 28 January 1813 , has consistently been Jane Austen's most popular novel . Austen sold the copyright for Pride and Prejudice to Thomas Egerton. Egerton published the first edition of Pride and Prejudice in three hardcover volumes in January. The tone is light and a little humoristic. Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and life among English gentility. At first the book was called "First impressions" and this gives a better expression to the requests of the author , than the later heading. People meet, do not understand each other and communication does not offer joy either. So this is contrary to love at first sight. It is a tale of love and values in the class -conscious England of the late 18th century . It is a story of five sisters and their lives. It is a story through the dangerous , exciting and loving feelings of the characters . The Bennets five daughters - the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth , the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia - have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband. Mr. Bennet is the owner of the medium -sized Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire. He is an intelligent man, who dislikes the frivolity of his wife and three younger daughters. He is closest to Elizabeth, who is the main female protagonist. She is intelligent, lively, attractive and witty.Mrs. Bennet finds the most important thing is to find husbands for her five daughters. In my oppinion , she is quite frivolous and narrow - minded . Unfortunately for the Bennets, if Mr. Bennet dies their house will be inherited by a distant cousin Mr. Collins . So the family's future happiness and security is dependant on the daughters making good marriages. Life is uneventful until the arrival in the neighbourhood of the rich gentleman Mr Bingley, who rents a large house so he can spend the summer in the country . Mr Bingley brings with him his sister and the dashing but proud Mr Darcy , who is the main male protagonist. Darcy is the wealthy owner of an estate in Derbyshire. He is handsome and intelliigent, but judgmental and concerned with social status. Soon there was a public ball in the village of Meryton, where Mr. Bingley demonstrates his admiration for Jane Bennet. Jane falls in love with him. I personally like the couplet, because they are quite open -minded to each other and they are more drollier than Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth. At first Darcy finds Elizabeth tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt him, but as the plot evolves Darcy begins to admire her, though Elizabeth dislikes him. Mr.Collins arrives for a visit to the estate in order to marry . He asks Elizabeth, who refuses him. Collins marries Charlotte Lucas. Lizzie is disappointed in Charlotte. I find the marriage also inconvenient, because Charlotte would be unhappy with Collins. Elizabeth meets a young officer, Mr.Wickham, with who Elizabeth became a friend for a while . Honestly Wickham was a deceiver and a strange man, who married Lydia Bennet. When Darcy first proposes to Elizabeth, than she refuses. He is stunned and mortified to be rejected. I think Elizabeth believed more the prejudice she had about Darcy and she did not believe at first that Darcy could be generous and even friendly and kind. The ending is really beautiful and I like it. Darcy proposes Elizabeth again and this time she accepts. They have a double wedding with joy and love. A major theme is the importance of environment and upbringing on the development of young people's character and morality . Social standing and wealth are not necessarily advantages. Pride and Prejudice, employs the narrative technique of free indirect speech . Austen invites the reader to follow events from Elizabeth's viewpoint, sharing her prejudices and misapprehensions and being surprised along with her when events prove these to be mistaken. In my oppinion, the book was really good and I liked it a lot. Though the language was quite difficult to understand sometimes, but I liked the style she has written the novel. I like the way she talks about the characters so prolixly and they were somehow still jolly. I did not like the character of Darcy in the beginning , because I thought it was too strict and was not humorous at all. But in the end I thought he is a really good man for Elizabeth. I would definitely recommend this book to others too, because this book gives you an unforgettable experience. In conclusion , I would like to say that Jane Austen has done a really good work and this classical romantic novel is marvellous.

The ones with biggest pride were lady Lucas and Caroline Bingley, rich ladies with sharp tongue. · Task 2: Identify who uttered the quotes (the list of characters might be of help): *"My good opinion once lost is lost forever" Charlotte Lucas *"Oh, my goodness.
