Why do we need morality?

So without laws and boundaries, people would be in constant war - every man for himself. In this kind of society there is no time for cultural or industrial development. No one can enjoy life because of the constant fear they life in. The "state of nature" or in other words chaos is not be beneficial to anyone. So to get what we all want - happiness, peace and security, we must make compromises and obey the laws and moral rules. In general, morality is a form of social control. As long as most of us follow the rules and cooperate, our lives are good. So in other words it is all about the majority - as long as the great number of people accept this, the humankind will be in prosper. Without morality the world would be an unbearable place and people would be miserable, lonely, unsatisfied and afraid. A great novel about morality and its effect is Lord of the Flies by William Golding (1945)

Hamlet’s View on Life and Death

He is thinking that the experience of death itself maybe worse than life itself Hamlet is a melancholic, always thinking about the dark things in life (he always dresses in black, he's fascinated when he finds the old clown's skull, etc.) I think that Hamlet does not really value his life so much because he is so consumed with his desire to kill Claudius that he doesn't have time for real life. Hamlet's view of death influences his morality: if all people die, no matter what they do, then one's actual life becomes less significant than its purpose. In Hamlet's case, this means that his death is not of great concern, but his revenge is. Hamlet saw death as a reliable end to mortal suffering, something that can bring comfort. Later we see clearly a shift in Hamlet's attitude towards death. He surrenders himself to his own fate - what God has for him... whether it is life or death. His

The renaissance period in England. Art and literature, development of drama. Dynasties, kings and queens.

Oldest plays were called mysteries and miracles, played by clergyman, showed scenes from Christ's life and saints lives. Were performed on religious holidays in church and they both encluded many choral elements (singing). Often formed cycles, several strories about same event . 14th century guilds became responsble for performing certain parts of saints lives and they performed them on cart that were pushed around in town. People who belonged to guild were actors, craftmen. At the end of 14th morality plays appeared and they were single plays. Aim was to teach people a moral lesson. Often dramatized these plays the conflict between good and evil. Characters were different vices and virtues. Bestknown morality was "Everyman" written 1485. In the 16th century more human themes were dealt with in plays. Different types of palys. Interludes are one act plays, staged in richman houses and the aim was to entertain. He never won any awards because at his lifetime no awards were given out. But there's an award called `'Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts'' which was first awarded in 1989. Interesting facts about him: Most of his writings are in mirror-image cursive. Since he wrote with his left hand, it was probably easier for him to write from right to left. Leonardo loved animals and it's documented in his notebooks. He even questioned the morality of eating animals when it was not necessary for health. These statements from his notebook have led to the widely held view that he was a vegetarian. He was very interested in the possibility of human flight. He produced many studies of the flight of birds and plans for several flying machines. Therefore, there are no police forces, only military forces, which means that extremists cannot be arrested without ground operations. Pakistani ground operations however, are not as precise and safe as using drones. (Fair, 2013) The use of drones brings back to the subject of intent and “kill lists”. Therefrom, people are questioning its morality. Naturally, it is vital to put a lot of effort in identifying the civilians from the combatants and protecting them. This is the moral responsibility that needs to be taken into account when targeting extremists. (Beautmont, 2012) Using drones when fighting a war is proven to be strategically beneficial and more humane than its alternatives. However, when analysing their usefulness in war, we also need to take into account the long-term implications of widespread psychological warfare

He is stunned and mortified to be rejected. I think Elizabeth believed more the prejudice she had about Darcy and she did not believe at first that Darcy could be generous and even friendly and kind. The ending is really beautiful and I like it. Darcy proposes Elizabeth again and this time she accepts. They have a double wedding with joy and love. A major theme is the importance of environment and upbringing on the development of young people's character and morality. Social standing and wealth are not necessarily advantages. Pride and Prejudice, employs the narrative technique of free indirect speech. Austen invites the reader to follow events from Elizabeth's viewpoint, sharing her prejudices and misapprehensions and being surprised along with her when events prove these to be mistaken. Right? As it turns out, even for Dorian, the saying out of mind- out of sight doesn't really work. You can only try to deny something but it is inevitable that one day the truth will come out and haunt you again. Since the main emphasize of Dorian's worries concerns his looks it is no wonder that he is selfish and weak. It is not too hard to sway his mind. Whether it is his true nature or an outcome of being easily influenced and manipulated with, Dorian cares not for standards of morality or consequences of his actions. He often concentrates on one of his most influential friend and sets his life according to his sayings. This causes Dorian to lose other amigos and important people. Dorian also lacks the knowledge of what is true love. He wants a trophy wife who either looks good or has a great talent. But if the woman loses her gift, Dorian feels like she betrays him. This proves once again the superficiality of Dorian Gray.

The death of their child and then of Clélia herself causes Fabrice to retire to the Carthusian monastery, or charterhouse, of Parma, where he dies. The incongruous yet always harmonious combination of lyricism and high comedy, of realism and dreamlike atmosphere, of The Charterhouse of Parma allows the author to caricaturize the petty tyranny of post-Napoleonic Europe, to question public morality, and to assert the prerogatives of love's follies. There are subtly drawn portraits of the naive and idealistic young Fabrice del Dongo (notably at the Battle of Waterloo); of his courageous and passionate aunt, the Duchess de Sanseverina; of her lover, the benevolent Machiavellian statesman Count Mosca; and of the young and innocent Clélia Conti, the daughter of Fabrice's jailer, who falls in love with the handsome prisoner. What is the difference between legal positivism and natural law theory (look from Internet!)? Legal positivism states that law is created by the people in power, therefore government who is a legally constituted authority. Law is still law and must be obeyed and therefore human nature or morality is not of concern. The validity is in law itself and is sufficient evidence that it must be followed. Natural law on the other hand is legal rights or ‘’law’’ in the moral itself. It mean that the right thing is not what the law says, but the morals that the society creates are right and valid. Everything that is against human nature is unjust or immoral and moral is the only right ‘’law’’ by nature. WHO OF THEM IS RIGHT: MATERIALISM OR IDEALISM AND WHY?

The earliest drama began as liturgical (a kind of sermon in church) drama. · Miracle plays or miracles, were performed by guilds of artisans in town squares. There were several cycles of miracle plays (around 50). They all had some kind of religious component, the lives of saints or stories of the Bible. · Morality plays were the beginning of secular (non-religious) drama. Mostly allegorical characters, a lot of moralising, the struggle of good and evil etc. The plot is closer to everyday lives. · Interludes comic episodes, close to farce and fabliau. The novels usually talked about a strong, violent hero (anti-hero?) who moves through a corrupt dangerous world. ``The Black Dahlia`` is based on a novel by James Ellroy and not on a true Black Dahlia (murder) case. The theme of murder/crime/violence is one of the most important themes in Film Noir. In Film Noir morality is less clear (than in Western, for example, where there are simply to sides: good vs evil). There exists a feeling of paranoia about society, as we can clearly see in this film. At first, there is not explanation, why the horrible murder has taken place, at the end, the reasons, why come out, but they are mad and frightening. Sex is the other big theme in Noir. her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family at Marsh's End (or Moor House) and Morton, where her cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester. Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism. It is a novel considered ahead of its time. In spite of the dark, brooding elements, it has a strong sense of right and wrong, of morality at its core. There are several Christian aspects underlying the plot that mold its character and essence. Jane Eyre is divided into 38 chapters; most editions are at least 400 pages long (although the preface and introduction on certain copies are liable to take up another 100). The original was published in three volumes, comprising chapters 1 to 15, 16 to 26, and 27 to 38. Brontë dedicated the novel's second edition to William Makepeace Thackeray. [edit] Plot summary

200,000 Japanese people. No other species has ever wielded such power, and no species could. The technology behind the atomic bomb only exists because of a cooperative hive mind: hundreds of scientists and engineers working together. The same unique intelligence and cooperation also underlies more positive advances, such as modern medicine. But is that all that defines us? In recent years, many traits once believed to be uniquely human, from morality to culture, have been found in the animal kingdom (see part one in this two-part series). So, what exactly makes us special? The list might be smaller than it once was, but there are some traits of ours that no other creature on Earth can match. No animal can get close to the devastation humans can cause (Credit: Thinkstock) No animal can get close to the devastation humans can cause (Credit: Thinkstock) Ever since we learned to write, we have documented how special we are. attempted in Great Britain. Inaugurated in some rooms in Versailles, it unfolds its magnificence in several Parisian buildings (especially the Hôtel Soubise). In Germany, French and German artists (Cuvilliés, Neumann, Knobelsdorff, etc.) effected the dignified equipment of the Amalienburg near Munich, and the castles of Würzburg, Potsdam, Charlottenburg, Brühl, Bruchsal, Solitude (Stuttgart), and Schönbrunn. In Great Britain, one of Hogarth's set of paintings forming a melodramatic morality tale titled Marriage à la Mode, engraved in 1745, shows the parade rooms of a stylish London house, in which the only rococo is in plasterwork of the salon's ceiling. Palladian architecture is in control. Here, on the Kentian mantel, the crowd of Chinese vases and mandarins are satirically rendered as hideous little monstrosities, and the Rococo wall clock is a jumble of leafy branches. In general, Rococo is an entirely interior style, because the wealthy and aristocratic moved back

this problem. Jake, with typical subtlety, suggests that she does not want to because it would mean giving up sexual intercourse. Jake's hostility toward Robert Cohn is perhaps rooted in his own feelings of inadequacy. In many ways, Jake is a typical member of what poet Gertrude Stein called the "lost generation," the generation of men and women whose experiences in World War I undermined their belief in justice, morality, manhood, and love. Without these ideals to rely on, the Lost Generation lived an aimless, immoral existence, devoid of true emotion and characterized by casual interpersonal cruelty. Part of Jake's character represents the Lost Generation and its unfortunate position: he wanders through Paris, going from bar to bar and drinking heavily at each, his life filled with purposeless debauchery. He demonstrates the capacity to be extremely cruel, especially toward Cohn

Jacques Louis David ja Prantsuse Revolutsioon

(Friedlaender, 1952, p.16) Jacques-Louis David was born in Paris in 1748 as the son of an ironmonger. The leader of the French classical movement studied with the artist Joseph-Marie Vien. Although, he attained his real art education in Rome, where he was surrounded by ancient ruins and the masterpieces of great Italian painters. After returning to Paris in 1789 David started to shape his vision, connecting the themes from Antique with the themes of strict morality and heroic sacrifice. This was compatible with the new ideas of the French Republic and therefore David quickly turned into a national hero. When the French revolution started, Jacques-Louis David was as passionate towards politics as he was towards his art. He joined the National Convention, staged Republic marches and attacked the Royal Academy. His actions almost ended with him being guillotined but fortunately he was only sentenced a time in prison.

authors who saw Islam as an adversary in the light of the large numbers of new Muslim converts. This opposition resulted in polemical treatises which depicted Islam as the religion of the antichrist and of Muslims as libidinous and subhuman. In the medieval period, a few Arab philosophers like the poet AlMa'arri adopted a critical approach to Islam, and the Jewish philosopher Maimonides contrasted Islamic views of morality to Jewish views that he himself elaborated. Starting in the 9th century, Muslim conquests in the West began to be reversed. The Reconquista was launched against Muslim principalities in Iberia, and Muslim Italian possessions were lost to the Normans. From the 11th century onwards alliances of European Christian kingdoms mobilized to launch a series of wars known as the Crusades, bringing the Muslim world into conflict with Christendom

It appeals to our fascination with digital readouts, computers, buttons and dials. But the complexity of Earth and its life systems can never be safely managed. The ecology of the top inch of topsoil is still largely unknown, as is its relationship to the larger systems of the biosphere. What might be managed is us: human desires, economies, politics, and communities. But our attention is caught by those things that avoid the hard choices implied by politics, morality, ethics, and common sense. It makes far better sense to reshape ourselves to fit a finite planet than to attempt to reshape the planet to fit our infinite wants. A third myth is that knowledge is increasing and by implication human goodness. There is an information explosion going on, by which I mean a rapid increase of data, words, and paper. But this explosion should not be taken for an increase in knowledge and wisdom, which cannot so easily by measured

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique?

the act of torture, it is still important to do this for the right reasons. There are enough legal and ethical grounds to do so. The most evident grounded reason is probably the fact that it harms the dignity of a human being. However, this argument convinces some more than others. The consequential idea that a small evil is allowed to avoid a bigger evil doesn't uphold any valid norms or values but emphasizes the justness of the outcome. This gives room to place truth and morality aside, because the goal is set and the means to obtain it serve the purpose of the goal. A great flaw that arises here though is what is called the association fallacy. What can happen according to such reasoning is that an incorrect understanding of a situation causes for a certain new behaviour, which makes the original incorrect understanding true. The believer of the original understanding will present the series of events to prove that they were right from the beginning. In the case

Henry James (1843-1916), noted American-born English essayist, critic, and author of the realism movement wrote The Ambassadors (1903), The Turn of the Screw (1898), and The Portrait of a Lady (1881). James's works, many of which were first serialised in the magazine The Atlantic Monthly include narrative romances with highly developed characters set amongst illuminating social commentary on politics, class, and status, as well as explorations of the themes of personal freedom, feminism, and morality. In his short stories and novels he employs techniques of interior monologue and point of view to expand the readers' enjoyment of character perception and insight. Often comparing the Old World with the New, and influenced by Honore de Balzac, Henrik Ibsen, Charles Dickens, and Nathaniel Hawthorne of whose work he wrote "too original and exquisite to pass away" James would become widely respected in North America and Europe, earning honorary degrees from Harvard and Oxford Universities,
