London the new Babel
London is the capital of the United Kingdom but at the same time it is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. The population of London is more than seven million people. There are very many different people living in one city. Almost every race, culture and religion in the world is represented in London.
Many people move to London to work or study . It is very popular among young people because of the nightlife , universities with good reputation and big shopping streets. For older people the main attraction is in theatres , great museums and parks . In the past few years , the number of immigrants has grown rapidly because of the widening of the European Union. It is now easier for people to travel inside the EU.
Londoners are well known for their politeness but not all of them deserve this kind of fame . There are many people living in London who do not accept other races and religions. They do not like foreigners visiting London as tourists nor living there. Racism is most common among young people or in areas where many coloured people live . The most common act of racism is calling names . There are very many coloured people in London and it is offensive to call them “nigga”, “negro” or “Japs”. But calling names isn’t the worst act of racism. Many immigrants get beaten up or bullied because of their religion or ethnic origin . Some get killed and commit suicide because of the bulling. I think that a person who persecutes somebody because of who he or she is isn’t a smart one. It is important to respect other cultures and not to judge someone just because he or she is different from you.
There are also people who don’t mean to be impolite but tend to be because of their lack of knowledge . For example it is easy to mix up Japanese and Chinese . At the same time a simple mistake like this may hurt another person’s feelings . Also when a person comes from a different society where different names for coloured people have different values . For example if one comes from Estonia where calling dark skinned people “ black ” could also be interpreted as they were filthy then he or she could easily offend someone by calling them “negro”. In another language it is the polite way but in London it isn’t. I think it would help to do some research before travelling and not to refer to coloured people with nicknames but with their real names.
Racism is a serious problem not only in London but everywhere where different races meet. I don’t think it has a solution but it could help to teach young people tolerance and acceptance.
