Leonardo Da Vinci
We are making a presentation about Leonardo da Vinci. He was an Italian polymath and he had a wide range of interests including sculpture, science and painting. He is widely considered one of the greatest and most famous painters of all time.
He was born on April 15th 1452 in a town called Vinci, that is also where he got his name from. Very little is known about his early life, but he spent his first five years with his mother and then moved together with his father . Leonardo had 12 half -siblings who were all much younger than him. Leonardo received an informal education in Latin , geometry and mathematics. At the age of 14 he joined a workshop held by an artist known as Verrocchio. There he painted his painting ‘’Baptism of Christ ’’, which first gained notoriety. Leonardo Da Vinci died in 1519 at the age of 67.
Leonardo was and is primarily known as a painter . Among his other works , ‘’ Mona Lisa’’ is the most famous and most parodied portrait which he pained during 1503-1519. The most reproduced religious painting ‘’The Last Supper’’ was pained by him during 1495- 1498 . His drawing of the ‘’ Vitruvian Man’’ is regarded as a cultural icon , being reproduced on items such as the euro coin, textbooks and t-shirts. Perhaps fifteen of his paintings have survived. His studies in science and engineering are recorded in more than 13,000 pages of notes and drawings which have found their way to major collections such as the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, the Louvre and many others. As a successful artist he was also given permission to dissect human corpses. He made over 240 detailed drawings on anatomy . During his lifetime he was also valued as an engineer . He was able to create all sorts of machines .
Leonardo Da Vinci’s IQ was 220 and he is widely considered one of the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. He was already very famous during his lifetime and interest in Leonardo and his works has never diminished. He never won any awards because at his lifetime no awards were given out. But there’s an award called ‘’Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts’’ which was first awarded in 1989.
Interesting facts about him:
  • Most of his writings are in mirror -image cursive. Since he wrote with his left hand, it was probably easier for him to write from right to left.
  • Leonardo loved animals and it’s documented in his notebooks. He even questioned the morality of eating animals when it was not necessary for health. These statements from his notebook have led to the widely held view that he was a vegetarian .
  • He was very interested in the possibility of human flight . He produced many studies of the flight of birds and plans for several flying machines.
  • Davinciite, a recently found mineral recognised in 2011 by the International Mineralogical Association , is named in honour of the artist.

Leonardo da Vinci imagined and sketched the first parachute in the 15th century . He didn´t invent the clock , but he did design a more accurate one, which had two separate mechanisms: one for minutes and one for hours . Leonardo da Vinci is also believed to be the inventor of scuba gear . Many of his inventions didn´t became well-known until the famous Codex Atlanticus (which is a twelve -volume, bound set of drawings and writings (in Italian language ) by Leonardo da Vinci).
We chose Leonardo Da Vinci because he is so well-known and we thought that he was an interesting person. Also we were sure , that there would be a lot of information and research about him because of his fame .

The Pre-Raphaelites

THE PRE-RAPHAELITES The PRB was formed in 1848 in London and it was an association of painters, poets, critics, sculptors. It was founded by three Royal Academy students who wanted to brake free from the academic art and return to the moral and descriptive truthfulness that they felt was gone from art. (The Royal Academy of Arts is and institution with a purpose to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate.). The founders were William Hunt, John Millais, Dante Rossetti. Because of the fact that they were all students they were also very young- the oldest one, Hunt, was 21. They were soon joined by William Rossetti(critic), James Collison(painter), Frederic Stephens (critic), Thomas Woolner(sculptor). The three youthful Pre-Raphaelites deliberately challenged the established view of art, drawing up a manifesto of their intentions and publishing them in the four issues of a periodical called

English literature from the Baroque to the Romanticism

English literature from the Baroque to the Romanticism 1. The Jacobean Masque The development of the cultural scene in England brought about the Jacobean masque. The courtly culture became gradually more distant and isolated from the public. Ben Jonson was to become the poet who would write masques for the court. He would, in his masques, try to represent the idea of kingship as it resided in the Platonic realm, and not its reality. Jonson’s aim was also to be educative. Inigo Jones, Jonson’s collaborator, was the one to revolutionize in the field of visual perception, also adding moving machinery and a manipulation of artificial light to the scenery. Jones also viewed the masque as something to be used in educating people. This idea of art as an educative vehicle soon affected all the different areas of courtly life. Jones’s masque sets, for example, educated the audiences about classical antiquity and classical architecture. Jonson and Jones were the ones who gave the Stuart
