Austraalia ajalugu

was a disaster for the Aborigines. Captain cook arrived in Botany Bay and claimed Australia for Britain. The 18th century life was hard and even small crimes were severe in Britain. Sometimes prisoners would be sentenced to transportation. After the American War of Independence (17751783) transportation wasn't possible anymore and the government began looking for another place for the transportees which was selected to be Botany Bay. On 13.05.1787 11 ships set sail from Portsmouth. 759 convicts were on board, most of them guarded with Captain Arthur Philip in command. The reason for founding a colony in Australia wasn't the riddance of unwanted people. The British may have hoped to found a naval base in the Pacific, sources of timer and flax. They arrived on 26.01.1788. Things were hard for them and food was short. Things gradually improved and a second and third fleet arrived in years 1790 and 1791. Convicts

Natural disasters

other structures are quickly destroyed. And just as every day these villages are leveled by these disastrous attacks, the world's top scientists are working relentlessly to come out with a plan for the prediction and prevention of these horrible assaults. The men of the seas are always on the lookout for another natural disaster: whirlpools. These massive swirling vortexes of water are the cause of many lost sailors every year. With our primitive technology and archaic maps, seafarers sail the vast seas virtually blind, and can only hope to reach their destination. But sadly, all too often they will unknowingly navigate their ships straight into a tremendous whirlpool. As the trapped schooners swirl helplessly into these black holes of the seas, they are lost forever. It is believed that they end up in some alternate dimension, but this is only theory at this time. We can only hope to one day locate, and contain all the whirlpools in the expansive oceans of our world.

plumed name." His full name showed the multi-faceted aspect of his experiences and personality. Orlando chose to call him "Mar" when she was in a dreamy, amorous mood, "Bonthrop" when she was in a solitary mood, and "Shel" when she was in no mood at all. That Shel was a complicated person, made him acceptable as Orlando's husband. After awhile, the wind changed and it was time for Shel to return to his ship and sail away. However, before that they quickly let the servant wed them. Shel proved his love and went off, and Orlando got a ring that she had wanted. Although Shel was far away, they communicated between each other quite often. Orlando sent him telegraphs about her doings and vice versa. In the end of the book, it is nicely described how Orlando felt when she saw her husband's ship sailing towards her. ,,Oh rash, oh ridiculous man, always sailing, so uselessly, round Cape Horn in the teeth of a gale

Oscar Wilde

Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. As the result of a widely covered series of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years hard labour after being convicted of "gross indecency" with other men. After Wilde was released from prison he set sail for Dieppe by the night ferry. He never returned to Ireland or Britain. In 1883, Irish-born Oscar Wilde returned to London bursting with exuberance from a year long lecture tour of the United States and Canada. Full of talent, passion and, most of all, full of himself, he courted and married the beautiful Constance Lloyd. A few years later, Wilde's wit, flamboyance and creative genius were widely renowned.

During the late summer and early autumn whales swim close to the coast and are sometimes seen in the harbours. But of course the best way to spot these huge mammals is at sea. Whale-watching tours are offered in several towns in Greenland. When you sail along the coast on a passenger ship, the captain will often notify you when whales are close. There are many different species of whales in Greenlandic waters including the two largest, the blue whale and the fin whale. Humpback whales, minke whales, narwhales, beluga or white whales, sperm whales, pilot whales and Greenland whales are among the other species here. At sea you'll also see seals. An estimated two million seals live in Greenlandic waters

Referaat Spanish California

Spanish California Sten Endrik Mihkelsoo MM-14 California's contact with Europeans began in the mid 1530s when Cortez's men ventured to Baja California. Not until 1542 did Spaniards sail north to Alta California, and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's expedition of that year made landings as far north as modern Santa Barbara. The Spaniards, of course, were hardly the first to discover this land of wonder and extremes. The earliest Californians were adventurous Asians who made their way across the Bering Straits to Alaska thousands of years ago when a warmer climate and a now-vanished land bridge made such travel easier. These men and women and their descendants settled

National Symbols of New Zealand

At that time, a trading ship built inNZ, Sir George Murray was seized in Sydney by Customs officials for sailing without a flag or register. Australia, which was the most important trading partner for NZ had British navigation laws which ruled that every ship must carry an official certificate detailing construction, ownership and nationality of the ship. The problem was that during that period of time, NZ was not yet a colony ofGreat Britan, thats why the NZ-built ships could not sail under a British flag or register. Without a flag to represent the new nation, trading ships and their valuable cargoes would continue to be seized (held by the Australian customs (toll) The Australians called for signing a legislation to remove any obstacles to New Zealand's increasing trade with the ports in Australia. While a temporary licence was granted in August 1831 allowing the Sir George Murray to return to Sydney for trading, the need for an official

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

The earlier images are very marked by the perspective traditionally used in Japanese painting, where the viewer sees the scene from a bird's-eye view. The Great Wave, on the other hand, is depicted in a more western perspective, giving the feeling that the wave will break on top of the viewer. In the earlier prints the horizon is in the middle, whereas in the Great Wave the horizon is so low that it forces the viewer's eye to the very center of the action. In the first two, there is a sail boat on the crest of the wave, as if it had managed to escape. Hokusai eliminated this element for the Great Wave, because it interfered with the dynamic of the curve or to make the image more dramatic. Non original copies and derivative works Like other well known Japanese prints, the Great Wave has been frequently copied using the same techniques, as well as reproduced by photo-mechanical means. These copies are often confused with the authentic original print

Tekkinud lahkhelide tulemusena katkeb kahe partneri koostöö ja teose uueks libretistiks saab tuntud Inglise dramaturg Alan Ayckbourn. Lugu ebaõnnestus, aga tema uusversioon, mis valmis 1996.a. uue nime all ,,By Jeeves", oli hulga edukam. 1976 aastal, jälle koostöös Tim Rice ga, valmib teine maailmakuulus rock-ooper, ,,Evita". Lugu Argentiina presidendi Juan Peroni naisest Eva Duarte Peronist ilmus algul plaadina, kus Evitat laulis Julie Covington. Laul ,,Don t Cry for Me Argentina" sail kohe hitiks, tõusis Inglise muusikaesetabelis esikohale, ja rock-ooper lavastati Prince Edward Theatre s 21.06.1978.a., kus produtsenduks oli Harold Prince ja Evitat laulis Elaine Paige. Esimene Evita Broadway l oli Patti LuPone, kes sai selle rolli eest Tony auhinna. ,,Evita" oli üldse väga edukas, teda etendati West Endis 10 aastat. 1996.aastal tegi Alan Parker loost ka filmiversiooni, mis tekitas tohutut

Díaz died on the trip back to the camp in the valley of the Corazones. Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenas saw the Colorado River from the rim of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon while looking for a route that would connect them with Alarcón's fleet. The Legend of the Seven Cities The Legend of the Seven Cities of Gold dates back to the eighth century, when the Moors of Africa conquered Spain for Islam. The archbishop of Porto in Portugual was believed to have set sail with six other bishops and a group of colonists and their cattle and supplies. The Christians reached land, so the story goes, burned their ships so that no one would be tempted to return to Spain, and each bishop built a fabulously rich city. Spanish cartographers had traditionally placed these cities on an island somewhere in the Atlantic, but as more and more islands were explored and no cities turned up,

Within three years of its publication, it had been reprinted nine times with 11,000 copies circulating in the United States; it was also translated into the French and Dutch languages. The book's success had an unfortunate side effect: his friends and mentors feared that the publicity would draw the attention of his ex-owner, Hugh Auld, who could try to get his "property" back. They encouraged him to go on a tour in Ireland, as many other ex-slaves had done in the past. He set sail on the Cambria for Liverpool on August 16, 1845, and arrived in Ireland when the Irish famine was just beginning. Douglass actually published three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime (and revised the third of these), each time expanding on the previous one. The 1845 Narrative, which was his biggest bestseller, was followed by My Bondage and My Freedom ten years later in 1855. After the Civil War, he brought out Life and Times of Frederick

The church also features grave slabs, an oaken Baroque altar by Christian Ackermann and a number of monuments to famous people (e.g. Pontus de la Gardie, Karl Horn and Otto Uexküll, all Swedish military leaders; Admiral Samuel Greigh, a hero of Russo-Turkish sea battles; and Admiral Adam Johann Krusenstern, a Baltic German who was the first Russian citizen to sail round the world. The church organ, built in Germany in the 19th century, is one of few in Europe today with a specific romantic sound. Nowadays, the church has an Estonian Lutheran congregation and also serves as a concert hall. 3. Britain history.

Henry VII united the two rival houses and started the Tudor dynasty. During Henry's reign the medieval period came to a close. There was a revival, or Renaissance, of learning, partly as a result of the printing press, which ended the Church's monopoly of learning. Henry's son and heir, Henry VIII created the Royal Navy, which culminated with the sinking of the Spanish Armada in 1588. One of the leaders of the English navy was Sir Francis Drake, who was the first Englishman to sail around the world. The Royal Navy also enabled England to realize her imperialistic ambitions and defy the Pope and the Catholic powers of Europe. Henry used Parliament to establish himself as the head of the Protestant Church with the Act of Supremacy (1534). His Reformation led to the creation of the religiously distinct Anglican Church. The dissolution of the monasteries provided Henry with much needed wealth.

He had many friends. He died in 1819. A monument was erected to him. 4) THANKSGIVING In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. On this day Americans give thanks for their blessings they have enjoyed during the year. Thanksgiving is usually a family day, celebrated with big dinners and happy reunions. The first American thanksgiving was held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621. In 1620 a small group of puritans on a ship called mayflower set sail for America. This group called themselves pilgrims because of their wanderings in search of religious freedom. There were 102 men, women and children on the ship- The pilgrims were poorly trained and poorly equipped to cope with life in the wilderness. One spring morning in 1621, an Indian came into the little village of Plymouth and introduced himself in friendly way. The Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, and grow food. Because of this help from Indians, the pilgrims had a

William Shakespeare - Hamlet

Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven; Whiles, like a puff'd and reckless libertine, Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads, And recks not his own rede. LAERTES O, fear me not. I stay too long: but here my father comes. Enter POLONIUS A double blessing is a double grace, Occasion smiles upon a second leave. 28 LORD POLONIUS Yet here, Laertes! aboard, aboard, for shame! The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail, And you are stay'd for. There; my blessing with thee! And these few precepts in thy memory See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act. Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar. Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel; But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new-hatch'd, unfledged comrade. Beware Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in, Bear't that the opposed may beware of thee.

Religioon õhtumaises kultuuris

1 RELIGIOON ÕHTUMAISES KULTUURIS ÕHTUMAISEST KULTUURIST: Õhtumaise kultuuri kolm komponenti on Vana-Kreeka, Vana-Rooma ja kristlus. Roomlased levitasid tsivilisatsiooni läänemaailma. Nende riigikorraldus töötas väga hästi, see tõi kaasa arusaama inimkonna ühtsusest. Kuigi roomlased tegid väga suurt vahet roomlaste ja barbarite vahel, arvati inimkond siiski ühtne olevat. Kristluse rüpest kasvas välja modrene teadus. Õhtumaa on peamiselt valgenahaliste protestantide poolt loodud maa. ...
