The Canterbury tales by Geoffrey Chaucer

Essay based on ,,The General Prologue" by G. Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury tales at the end of the 14th century. It is a collection of stories where a group of pilgrims have a storytelling contest. All of them are on their way from Southwark to visit the shrine of a holy martyr who had brought health to them when they were ill. Chaucer joined the twenty nine of them in a tavern and started to talk to them. They quickly became friends and then there were thirty. All of the stories and very different characters create a body to the story, which

The ,,arabesque" are those in which horror or other emotion in violent suspense gives the tale its power ("The Fall of the House of Usher") In the ,,grotesque" tales the effect is achieved by a grim and ironic humour ("The Masque of Red Death") In the ,,ratiocinative" the effect comes from the use of rational analysis in

The giant's causeway

The giant's causeway Northern Ireland is a beautiful. The most famous sight is the Giant' s causeway on the north coast. According to legend, the columns are old stepping stones, that giants used to cross the channel between ireland and Scotland. Although there are an abundance of tall tales, and myths describing colourful ways the Giant's Causeway came into being, the actual, natural history is a bit less exciting. The actual history is that the rock formations were created by a lava flow some 65 million years ago by molten basalt rising through a chalk bed, and then cooling and cracking to form the tall columns that make up the causeway. Legend: Legend has it that the Finn McCool built the causeway to walk to Scotland to fight his Scottish counterpart Benandonner

Tallinn is the right place for tourists who want to get know about the medieval life in Europe. Here are such attractions as the Medieval Old Town, Kadriorg Park and Rusalka monument. These are the main places people usually want to visit. So, we must develop our tourism system. For example, make up some journey programmes with elements of the Estonian tales. That certainly attracts much more tourists in Tallinn. Moreover, Tallinn has the good benefit in its geographical location. Estonia is like a bridge or gate between Europe and Russia. And Tallinn is the heart of Estonia its capital. Estonians could get some profits from such situation, but for some unknown reasons they did not do that still. The only thing we need to solve this question - is to get on well with Russia. Our two

Jaanipäev

Jaani, or midsummer, ritual is the lighting of the bonfire and the jumping over it. This is seen as a way of guaranteeing prosperity and avoiding bad luck. Likewise, to not light the fire is to invite the destruction of your house by fire. The fire also frightened away mischievous spirits who avoided it at all costs, thus ensuring a good harvest. So, the bigger the fire, the further the mischievous spirits stayed away. Midsummer's eve is important for lovers. Among Estonian fairy tales and literature there is the tale of two lovers, Koit and Hämarik .These two lovers see each other only once a year and exchange the briefest of kisses on the shortest night of the year. Earth-bound lovers go into the forest looking for the flower of the fern which is said to bloom only on that night. Also on this night, single people can follow a detailed set of instructions involving different flowers to see whom they are going to marry.

A great part of K. Rauds work is based on Estonian folklore. his drawings have been the first to give visible shape to strange and ancient creatures, ghosts, goblins and personificated natural forces and even to tales of flying lakes etc. The magic world of Kristjan Rauds drawings charms the viewer with its epic poetry. In 1935 many Estonian homws acquired a copy of their national epic Kalevipoeg illustrated by Kristjan Raud. This made his name known to his fellow countrymen. They gather secretly in places where they are free to talk to each other. Some otherkin claim they are allergic to iron (here is the illustrative picture) or some other things that people actually are not allergic to - for example garlic, silver, some kinds of wood, whilst other otherkin (usually half-dragons) claim that having no allergies at all is a sign of being an otherkin. Some otherkin also claim to be especially empathic and attuned to nature. It is obvious that these stories and strange events connected to these stories influenced the appearance of real vampires and half-unicorns but there comes the question- where were the otherkins two hundred years ago? Or why did they firstly appear only 20 years ago? Well, it is believed that

There was also an Aztec legend of Chicomoztoc, the Seven Caves, which seemed to give substance to the Spanish hopes. As these stories circulated as part of the Spanish lore, tales were coming down from the north from Indians who claimed to have seen cities of buildings four and five stories high, decorated with turquoises. When the four forlorn survivors of the Florida expedition of Narvaez arrived in Mexico in 1536, they reported tales of large and powerful villages, four and five stories high. Cabeza de Vaca, one of these survivors, said that the lands he had actually seen were "remote and malign, devoid of
