Dear listeners,
most of us here today are soon going to make the biggest and most important step of our lives so far. We are going to start a completely new and different life after graduation. The emphasis therefore should be on the word "life". The real thing, it's coming , it's going to hit us and it's going to hit us hard . Nothing is going to be the same . Life will never ever be as simple, carefree and easygoing again .
To me, the expression "life is hard" has never meant anything . I have always been more of a "life is beautiful"-type. I have never really thought that it actually is hard. Mostly because I have never thought what the real life is like. Ofcourse I have seen it, it's all around me, but only seeing and seeing plus thinking through what you see are two really different things.
An example: have you ever been to a funeral of a collateral relative as a child ? Do you remember what you felt ? I remember I felt almost nothing and I never cried. When someone died, for example a granduncle, I didn't feel particularly sad, because as long as it wasn't anyone close to me, the death didn't influence my life in any way. Now a few weeks back my great-grandmother died, and even if I didn't know her and had only seen her a few times in my life, I flustered . The fact that someone I'm related to will never be here again, made me feel really scared and uncomfortable. What if it was someone really close to me? What will I do when that happens? How will I handle that? What if one day the most important person I have at that time disappears by my side? How is it even possible to handle that?
Another example - when I was younger, every time something bad happened in the world, I didn't honestly care. When thousands died in 9/11 attacks, I didn't know how to react , so I didn't react at all. I was ten, it was all of no significance to me and somewhere far away . Now every time I see Haiti in the news, I shiver. I try to ignore thinking about it, though. I can't imagine all the people there without food, homes and families . This is all real, it's really happening there.
Just the other day I was talking to my best friend about the past, present and future. The future came up as the most serious topic. I'm not surprised that never before have I thought about how will I get my own home, how will I pay the rent or a loan and the taxes , how will I provide a happy , carefree childhood and a great home for my children etc. All of that is hard. And that's not even what scares me, because everyone has to do that, and everyone does that, handles it in some way. What really scares me is the actual hard part of life. Think about the adults around you, who you really know. Your family members , relatives, acquaintances. Me and my friend - we got to thinking about our parents ', relatives' and their friends' lives and how they have handled it and we got to a conclusion that something really bad has happened to each and every one of them without any exceptions . Some examples : losing a child, losing a husband or a wife, losing an unborn baby, having one parent leave the whole family behind , losing a parent while still young, having a handicapped baby, becoming handicapped yourself, suffering from any kind of cancer or some other very serious illness (there are so many, you can never count them up), being in a serious accident and all of the different consequences that might have, having a fire in your home, losing your home, and so on. You can count the things that might happen endlessly. I'm not trying to be paranoid, but the sad fact is, something will happen to every one of us. And that is the hard part of the real life - handling a situation like that. The question is, after sufferings like that, how can people still say that life is beautiful?
I guess it's all in your head. Whether you accept that something has happened and you try to make the best out of it and do anything that makes your life great again, or you sit sadly and pity yourself, unable to fix anything. The slogans like " Look at the sunny side of everything", "After the rain always comes the sun", "Be happy with what you have, not with what you don't", and "It might always be worse " might sound cheesy, but they are there for a reason - they are true. Life is hard, but as much as it's hard, it's beautiful. There are a million things that make life worth living , that make it beautiful and enjoyable, that make you happy. There's always something in your life that still makes it worthwhile. It's an art to remember and appreciate it even at the worst times of your life, but if you do that, you can get through anything. If you do that, you can have a beautiful, happy life what ever happens.
