A complaint letter

6 March 2014 Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing in order to complain about your product I bought. It is an i-phone, which I ordered from an online shop. A week later it stopped working properly. First of all, the on/off button is broken and does not let me open my phone. The screen colour of the device was also unacceptably almost black and white. In addition to this, the sound was a little bit off and I could no adjust it in the settings. For some reason I also could not see my messeages at all. No only the screen was borken, the camera was not working either. I suggest that you explain all that, replace the item or give me a full refund. I look foward to receiving your explanation. Yours faithfully, Mari Mets

DIPHTHONGS Origin: Late Middle English: from French diphtongue, via late Latin from Greek diphthongos, from di- 'twice' + phthongos 'voice, sound'. A diphthong is a special kind of vowel sound. Most vowel sounds in English are made with the mouth in one position and with one pure sound. These vowel sounds are called monophthongs (mono meaning “one” and phthong meaning “sound”). A diphthong is one vowel sound formed by the combination of two vowel sounds. A diphthong begins as one vowel sound and moves toward another, such as the vowel sounds in coin or loud. Mid-term 1 in English Phonetics and Phonology

Articulatory phonetics the study of how the vocal tract produces the sounds of language. Phonology maybe used by actors, teachers, computer engineers etc. Phonology the description of the systems and patterns of speech sounds in a language. It studies: the abstract or mental aspect of the sounds in a language the actual physical articulation of speech sounds The phoneme. Phoneme is a meaning distinguishing sound in a language; it functions contrastively/ the smallest contrastive unit in the sound system of a language. When there is a contrast in identical environment we must be dealing with separate phonemes - when we replace one sound with another, we get another word with another meaning, therefore that sound must be a phoneme. There are small shades of sounds that don't distinguish meaning phones. The different phones that are the realisations of the same phoneme are called allophones.

The Inchcape Rock

The point on the first stanza is only to set the tone, it has no real artistic value. The second stanza states that there was no sign of the Inchcape Rock, which lay below the water surface. The water gave no sign of that deadly rock and the low, calm waves did not move, or sound the Inchcape Bell - the warning bell, put there to alert the sailors of a nearby peril. Southey creates tension by describing the location of the bell "Without either sign or sound of their shock / The waves flow'd over the Inchcape Rock;" - the ships are left clueless about the Rock that awaits, to tear them apart, under the clam surface. The mood immediately changes with this stanza. The word "shock" has an ominous under-tone, which gives the reader a hint of the future horrors, which are going to happen near the rock. In the third stanza we are explained how the Bell came to be there, where it now stands. The

Strong and weak verbs. Word order relatively free with tendencies towards SVO. SVO, SOV, VSO most common. Adposition and podposition were both possible (eesliide ja tagaliide). About syntax: clauses were joined much simpler than nowadays, using and, then etc. Because of case syncretion the word order in a sentence became much more important to be able to tell the difference between words. FIRST CONSONANT SHIFT (GRIMM'S LAW) Grimm's Law (also known as the First Germanic Sound Shift or Rask's rule) is a set of statements named after Jakob Grimm describing the inherited Proto-Indo-European (PIE) stop consonants as they developed in Proto-Germanic (the common ancestor of the Germanic branch of the Indo- European family) in the 1st millennium BC. It establishes a set of regular correspondences between early Germanic stops and fricatives and the stop consonants of certain other centum Indo-European languages (Grimm used mostly Latin and Greek for illustration).

songs of rhythm and blues influenced British Invasion acts, including "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks (1964), "My Generation" by The Who (1965) and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (1965) by The Rolling Stones From the late 1960s it became common to divide mainstream rock music that emerged from psychedelia into soft and hard rock Hard rock was most often derived from blues-rock and was played louder and with more intensity. Getting physical

This can actually coerce the distracted listener to reestablish eyetoeye contact with the speaker. When presenting dry, complex facts or statistics, odds are that the eyes and heads will stray. But, if you raise your voice, pound the lectern, or tell a story about real people and real events, the odds are that you'll turn heads back in your direction again. A good speaker communicates with the audience with his or her eyes. The first person to discover he didn't like the sound of his own voice was probably Thomas Edison. When he invented the first phonograph, he heard his own historic words, "Mary had a little lamb." Like most of us, Edison was probably disappointed because our voices sound different on a recording and we usually don't like the result. The reason is that our voices sound better inside our heads than they do when played back on recording machines. The two important lessons here are (1) Your voice probably doesn't sound as bad as

Wanting to share the moment with his lover, he asks her to join him by the window and draws attention to the never-ending sound of the waves clashing against the shore and moving pebbles. Alas, this sound seems to bring forward a sudden realization of things in the author and everything seems sad and melancholic to him. In the second stanza, he compares his train of though with Sophokles's, who is also known to have sat on the beach while thinking about life. Then Aladeen will be replaced with mentally - challenged body double. In New York Aladeen meets a girl named Zoey. Then Aladeen starts to work in Zoeys store. When the New York visiting is over then Aladeen goes back to Wadya and marries to Zoey. The acting is brilliant and the characters were real. It is a good comedy. The sound of the movie is fantastic. The plot is very humorous and funny. I recommend this film to everyone who wants to see a film that is humorous and has good plot and sound. You do not want to miss this film. By: Tim Leesnurm

Elvis Presly

Elvis Presley Elvis (Aaron) Presley was an American singer and actor. One of the most popular musicians of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or "the King". Elvis Aaron Presley born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of 13. He began his career there in 1954, working with Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was the most important popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a number one hit. Short analysis of two phonetics articles

Can you tell by a single sound I make, whether I am straight, bi or gay? As ridiculous as it might sound and casting aside all stereotypes, it actually seems possible. Unbelievable? Well, sociolinguistics, sociopathology, sociophonetics are all very fascinating subjects. Never thought a single word or a sound you make could tell random strangers who you are? Well, prepare to be convinced otherwise. (Well, not solely by these two articles or my short conclusions, of course, it is a very wide field and there is yet much research to be done.) Anyhow, here I have found two research articles, both dealing with whether it is possible to distinguish someone's sexual identity solely based upon a few words, or much less, a single phone. The history of movies

The history of movies starts in early 1900s. American inventor Thomas Edison, began making short motion pictures at the turn of the century. In 1903, a movie called "The Great Train Robbery" was the first one to tell the whole story. Movies were silent at this time and orchestras played music in theathers, so movies would have sound. The Jazz Singer in 1927 was the first movie to have sound. A year later, 1928, a funny animation movie "Steamboat willie" was produced. 1920-s were also the rise of hollywood. The majority of film making took place in the hollywood area. Hollywood was the initial birth place of the studios. Studios there were separated into 3 different groups. The biggest one was the Big Five. It included studios like ee WB. 20th Century Fox and Paramount. Movies were fun. Everyone had something to talk about. People would go to see the

voiceless environment unvoiced, ie /f/. At the beginning of words: debatable. By constrast, vowel length was phonemic: man /man/ human being, man mn /ma :n/ - evil; witchcraft In old manuscripts vowel length indicated by ´ (like a stress mark), in modern editions a strike over the vowel. The scribes proceeded from the Latin alphabet. However, there were sounds in Old English that Latin did not have. Solutions had to be found. /æ/ - the sound is between /a/ and /e/, so a digraph (Greek for "two + letter") was created: æ (A similar thing in French, the digraph oe still in use, e.g. oeil eye) Old English had /ü/ like other Germanic languages today (e.g. German). (The sound was lost during the Middle English period).Latin had no such sound. y (a form of i) was used to indicate the sound. How do we know? Cf Old English "fyrst" and Modern German "Fürst", Estonian "vürst" (an old Low German loan).

The invention of the telephone inglise keel

Unfortunately, serious burns from an accident, a lack of English, and poor business abilities resulted in Meucci failing to develop his inventions commercially in America. Alexander Graham Bell is commonly believed as the inventor of the first practical telephone. Bell was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and educated at the universities of Edinburgh and London. He immigrated to Canada in 1870 and to the United States in 1871. He was an early student of sound and speech, inspired, perhaps, by the fact that his mother, Eliza, was almost totally deaf and his father, Melville, developed the first international phonetic alphabet. In his early 20s Bell himself taught deaf children to speak and gave speech lessons at schools in his community. Bell was the first to obtain a patent, in 1876, for an "apparatus for transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically", after experimenting with many primitive sound transmitters and receivers.

Esialgu proovis Edison parandada telegraafi ning avastas, et paberlindi liikumine tekitas häält, mis sarnanes sõnade lausumisele. on tape (CD) or through the way we ourselves model them. We can get students to imitate the way these moods are articulated. The key to successful pronunciation teaching is to have our students to listen and notice how English is spoken either on audio or video or from teachers themselves. The more aware they are the chance that their own intelligibility levels will rise. The phonemic alphabet: to use or not? Many students have problems of sound and spelling correspondence, so for them it is useful to introduce different phonemes and different symbols. Another thing is dictionaries usually give the pronunciation of the words in phonemic symbols. When both teacher and students know the symbols it is easier to explain what mistake has occurred and why it has happened; we can use the symbols for pronunciation tasks and games. Students should only recognise the different symbols not to produce them. When to teach pronunciation

Kahjulikud kosmeetikatooted

8 Kasutatud allikad Bio4You, Ohtlikud ained kosmeetikas. http://www.bio4you.eu/et/content/8-ohtlikud-ained- kosmeetikas 9.11.2013 Environmentally Sound, How Green Are Your Cosmetics? http://environmentallysound.wordpress.com/health/how-green-are-your-cosmetics/ 3.11.2013 Femme, Kosmeetika sisaldab varjatud ohtusid. http://www.femme.ee/hoolitsetud/uudised/531 6.11.2013 Puhas Elu 2011, Vahuaine SLS sampoonides ja hambapastades. http://www.puhaselu.paabel.ee/blogi/blogi.php?categories=kosmeetika 3.11.2013 Mõtle mida tarbid, Milles seisneb probleem? http://www.thinkbefore.eu/kosmeetika/ 2.11.2013 Kenk, Kaire 2009, Mis on kreemi sees

Translation history

And domain- The last sub-parameter of language use is domain – in its simplest explanation it refers to the type of language usually used within a particular field. For instance, we would probably not write about nuclear physics using taboo language or write a children’s book using overly official and complicated language; nor would we use children’s language when compiling a legal contract or filing an official complaint; a textbook would probably sound equally strange, were it written in slang. • Levels of formality and social distance. Be able to list the different levels of formality and identify the approximate level of formality of an example sentence. What does it mean that people are socially more close or distant? How is this indicated in speech? How is politeness indicated in speech? Officialese – The consumption of any nutriments whatsoever is categorically prohibited in this establishment.

Exami kysimused-vastused

Vowels are usually prolonged to express positive feelings. Consonants become longer to express negative emotions. ORCHESTRATION: Both oral and written speech may possess orchestration the choice of words with respect to acoustic properties of sounds, their sequence, and repetition. Due to their acoustic features sounds may create certain feelings, ideas or images. This is called euphony (from Greek "pleasant to the ear"). 7. PHONETIC STYLISTIC DEVICES ONOMATOPOEIA is sound imitation, echo writing. It is a combination of sounds suggesting the typical sounds the object makes. Traditional cases are: buzz, roar, whisper, ding-dong, splash, squeak, giggle, whistle, etc. More original and more expressive examples comprise nonce- coinages (e.g. "the train choo-chood to the station"). ALLITERATION - alliteration is the repetition of single sounds or groups of sounds (usually word-initial sounds, esp. consonants). Alliteration

Literary analyses of Beowulf

This was very important in the Anglo-Saxon period as in the contemporary time the epic was performed by court singers. "Beowulf" was written with four beats to each line. The lines were divided into two parts, each with two beats. This is a natural place for a stop in a line of words and is called a caesura. For example "Many at morning, as men have told me" or "Death-sick his den in the dark moor sought" etc. Here one can also see that the initial sound of the third beat in each line echoes the initial sound of the first or second beats, or both of them. To add to the emotional colouring of the text, a lot of metaphors and epithets have been used. Some more outstanding epithets include "And baleful he burst in his blatant rage", "Hardy heroes", "Fiendish claw", "Hideous fiend", "Outlaw dire" One can find several kennings, typical Anglo-Saxon compound metaphors, such as

-The rhythm, balance and contrasts of sentences, clauses and words also play their part. The sound-effects consist of onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, rhyme, intonation and stress. b. How do you understand the conflict between ‘truth’ and ‘beauty’? - c. Why are descriptive verbs (‘kirjeldav tegusõna’) usually easy to translate? - Descriptive verbs of movement and action, since they describe a manner, are rich in sound effect. d. Explain the importance of the metaphor in this context. - Metaphor is the link between the expressive and the aesthetic function. Metaphor connects the extra linguistic reality with the world of the mind through languages. Metaphor, being both an expressive and an asthetic component, has to be preserved intact in translation 6. Big Ben

When most people heat the words "Big Ben" they immediately conjure up an image of the striking Victorian Gothic structure of the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament). Let's clear up a common misconception first; technically speaking, the name "Big Ben" does not refer to the famous tower, nor to the four huge clock faces of this London landmark; instead, it refers to the largest of the five bells inside the clock tower, whose chimes are such a familiar sound to listeners to BBC radio over the years. The tower was begun following the disastrous fire which destroyed the old Palace of Westminster in 1834. Charles Barry was given the contract to rebuild the Palace, and his designs included a clock tower. The Tower

Martil Luther

Kasutatud allikad: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Lut...
