Government should charge fees because it is well known that the `education' is often only a small part of the university experience. Students spend far too much time and money drinking, partying and wasting time. Even if there is an argument for funding higher education itself (which we doubt) then it is very hard to justify why low income workers should pay taxes to support the `student lifestyle' of people who attend universities. As long as students don't pay, or understand, the full cost of their tuition, they are more likely to take it for granted and be wasteful as they currently do.
