Native Americans

Falling sea levels created the
Bering land bridge that joined
Siberia to Alaska, which began
about 60,00025,000 years
ago.
The indigenous peoples of the
Americas are the pre
Columbian inhabitants of
North and South America, their
descendants and other ethnic
groups who are identified with
those peoples.
There are over 500 recognized
native American tribes in America.
Agriculture and hunting
There were four basic ways for people in
ancient societies to find food: hunting
and fishing, gathering, farming, and
raising domesticated animals. Over the course of thousands of years,
American indigenous peoples
domesticated, bred and cultivated a large
array of plant species. These species now
constitute 5060% of all crops in
cultivation worldwide.
The Inuit (Eskimos) and some Indian tribes of
the far north relied almost entirely on hunting
and fishing to survive. Some Native Americans
were primarily big game hunters, migrating
frequently to follow herds of bison or caribou.
The Blackfoot and Sioux are two examples of
big game hunting tribes.
Clothing and feathers
Native american dress
Woodlands Native Americans wore
clothes made from animal skins with the
fur called pelts. They also used wild
grasses to make skirts for women.
Native American feathers are an important
symbol of the Indian way of life. It is used to
represent freedom, power, wisdom, honor,
trust, strength, and much more. Feathers were
seen in wardrobes, headpieces, adorning their
homes, and tattooed on their bodies.
Wigwam homes
Wigwams are small houses, usually 810 feet tall. Wigwams are made of wooden frames
which are covered with woven mats and sheets of birchbark.

Longhouses could be 200 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 20 feet high. Inside the longhouse,
raised platforms created a second story, which was used for sleeping space. Mats and wood
screens divided the longhouse into separate rooms. Each longhouse housed an entire clan as
many as 60 people!
Tepees
Tepees are tentlike American Indian houses. Tepees are good houses for people who are
always on the move.
Religion
They believed in a good and Supreme
Being, and in an Evil Spirit, and recognized
the existence of inferior good and evil
spirits. They believed in a future state of
existence, and there were no infidels
among them.
"medicinemen," were their physicians,
priests, and prophets, who on all
occasions, used incantations.
Problems
When the white settlers came , the Indians
lost their rich land, and most of their customs
and beliefs , but before the white men's
invasion they lived in harmony with nature .
Widespread epidemic diseases wich
killed millions of people--possibly in
excess of 90% of the population in the
hardest hit areas--and creating one of
"the greatest human catastrophe in
history.
Many lives were lost in wars over the centuries,
and war sometimes contributed to the near
extinction of certain tribes.
Today`s life Indians can expect to live till they
are 44 , everybody else in the United States can
expect to live till they are 64 . Their average
annual income is below poverty level .

US History: Native Americans and the first settlements

Notions for The New World Native Americans Origin of Native Americans Nearly one-third of Native American genes come from west Eurasian people linked to the Middle East and Europe, rather than entirely from East Asians as previously thought, according to a newly sequenced genome. Native peoples of North and South America descended from ancestors who arrived via land bridges from East Asia, possibly in a single migration. Different tribes and their way of life The men were hunters, warriors, and protectors, while the women tended to the children, their homes, and farmed. It depended on the tribe when it came to artwork. In some tribes, the men would actually weave baskets and blankets. Natural foods were consumed and hunted. Deer, buffalo, fish, and various birds

LONG BEFORE the white man set foot on American soil, the American Indians, or rather the Native Americans, had been living in America. When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Indians populating America north of present-day Mexico. And they had been living in America for quite some time. It is believed that the first Native Americans arrived during the last ice-age, approximately 20,000 - 30,000 years ago through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The oldest documented Indian cultures in North America are Sandia (15000 BC), Clovis (12000 BC) and Folsom (8000 BC) Although it is believed that the Indians originated in Asia, few if any of them came from India. The name "Indian" was first applied to them by Christopher Columbus, who
