Understanding Psychology

memory for skills and habits such as riding a bike. Semantic memory is memory for general knowledge and facts about the world, as well as memory for the rules of logic for deducing other facts. Episodic memory is memory for the biographical details of our individual lives. Explicit memory refers to international or conscious recollection of information. Implicit memory refers to memories of which people are not consciously aware, but which can affect subsequent performance and behavior. Levels of Processing. The levels-of-processing theory emphasizes the degree to which new material is mentally analyzed. In contrast to the view that there are sensory, short-term, and long-term memories, levels-of-processing theory suggests that the amount of information processing that occurs when material is initially encountered is central in determining how much of the information is ultimately remembered. Summary

” (Owen, 2013) Because of the drone-induced anxieties, most kids in Waziristan no longer attend school. People avoid daily activities such as grocery shopping, farming, and driving. People worry constantly about their immediate future, this kind of behaviour is symptomatic of “anticipatory anxiety”. Which causes emotional breakdowns, running indoors for safety, hiding during the day, having nightmares, and other anxiety-related problems which dramatically affect their ability to live their lives. They have trust issues and desire for revenge. (Owen, 2013) Nevertheless, drone warfare is as horrible as a Tomahawk cruise missile fired from a distant ship or a bomb dropped by a high-flying fighter plane. (Beautmont, 2012) Now, unlike a jet pilot or artilleryman who cannot see the target, aircrafts remote pilot can see the target it is about to hit. Thus, some drone operators feel as much guilt as those who kill at

The Polar Boy

The characters were in the kind of situations where they have to decide whether they trust their feelings, risk their lives believing in love or trust some stereotypes and fears they have. Although Mattias and Hannah made a lot of mistakes, they always tried to help each other. The film made me think more about people, who have mental illnesses, because the movie tried to show mental problems as they really are. This movie can deeply affect the public, drawing attention to the needs of mental patients, and increasing tolerance towards psychologically ill people. In conclusion I can say, that “The Polar Boy” is a powerful movie and it is definitely worth seeing. It is about hope and trust and it shows how kindness and love can cure even the deepest wounds.

Writting a summary

More than 333 million EU citizens, or two thirds of the total population, have the euro as their common currency. Without any currency barriers, they can take greater advantage of the benefits of the internal market for companies and consumers, workers and self-emloyed people. In conclusion, I would like to say that in this booklet, you can read lot about EU and countries that belong to the Union. Europe is our home and that’s why we need to know where we live and how it’s gonna affect us. I found these sections of booklet intresting beacuse they recalled what the European Union really is. The average length of stay also tends to drop significantly as tourists gain in occupancy percentage, which may indicate that the location of the hotel is not very favourable to tourism business as the area can probably be explored quickly. The conventions seem to affect the average length of stay positively. This may be due to the fact that conventions attract a notable number of occupants that are bound to stay for the span of the whole convention, which, on average, implies at least two day long stay. It would seem that 33-55 year-olds are more prone to use reservation through the agency that any other customer group, whereas 20-35 year-olds seem to be favouring direct reservations.

Interview with Chinese lecturer

According to a Chinese language lecturer of a University in Estonia, teaching in China and teaching in Estonia does have some differences. The lecturer received a BA from Shanghai Teachers' Collage and MA in Education from Boston University. She has taught overseas students for 3 years in Guangxi University in China before coming to Estonia in 2013. Since then she has taught in various universities in Tallinn. In her opinion the main differences that affect the teaching of Chinese in China and Estonia are the purpose of teaching, the authority that the teacher has, and the language environment of the country. In Estonia one of the main purposes of teaching Chinese is to increase the knowledge of China and Chinese culture in addition to the teaching the language. In China on the other hand the purpose is often to increase the ability of students to survive in the society, find work, and do business

You have set up enough tension that you are reasonably convinced that they will indeed seriously consider the deal and are likely to come back. Given some more time, it is likely that they will buy more (for example if they are at the edge of a budgetary period and their current funds are low). The relationship is important to you, and them making a wrong decision now would affect the chances of making sales in the future. You do not need to make the sale today (for example you have made your quota and this sale would be just fine for next month). Combine this with setting up the next meeting, when perhaps you will be able to solidly close the deal. screening test. However, it is less readily available, more expensive, and requires general anesthesia, which increases risk to the patient and cost to the owner. Therefore, radiographs are still more commonly used. However, situations exist where CT scan should be strongly considered. For example, prior to thoracotomy for pulmonary mass excision, CT scan should be recommended to better characterize lymph node size and determine the presence of smaller lesions, since both findings strongly affect prognosis.[5] In general, less expensive, less invasive, and less risky tests are offered first, although owners should be made aware that more expensive, more invasive tests may follow if diagnosis is not achieved. For example, fine needle aspiration and cytologic evaluation are often recommended prior to surgical removal and biopsy of a mass. For many tumor types, such as lymphoma and mast cell tumors, diagnosis is usually easily achieved with cytology, and

Caffeine

28 years there may be a modest protective effect against some diseases, including Parkinson's 29 disease, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Some people experience sleep disruption if 30 they consume caffeine, especially during the evening hours, but others show little disturbance 31 and the effect of caffeine on sleep is highly variable. 32 Caffeine is quickly and completely removed from the brain. Its effects are short-lived and it 33 tends not to negatively affect concentration or higher brain functions. However, continued 34 exposure to caffeine leads to developing a tolerance to it. Tolerance causes the body to become 35 sensitized to adenosine, so withdrawal causes blood pressure to drop, which can result in a 36 headache and other symptoms. Too much caffeine can result in caffeine intoxication, which is 37 characterized by nervousness, excitement, increased urination, insomnia, flushed face, cold

electromagnetism and electrochemistry. He was born on 22 September 1791 in Newington Butts, now part of the London Borough of Southwark; but then a suburban part of Surrey, one mile south of London Bridge. Faraday studied the magnetic field around a conductor carrying a DC electric current, and established the basis for the electromagnetic field concept in physics. He discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and laws of electrolysis. He established that magnetism could affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena. His inventions of electromagnetic rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor technology, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology. As a chemist, Faraday discovered benzene, investigated the clathrate hydrate of chlorine, invented an early form of the bunsen burner and the system of oxidation numbers,

Thoughts on Air Pollution Essay

Combined, these two sources are responsible for about 90% of all air pollution in the United States. Some cities suffer severely because of heavy industrial use of chemicals that cause air pollution. Places like Mexico City and Sao Paulo have some of the most deadly pollution levels in the world. EFFECTS Air pollution is responsible for major health effects. Every year, the health of countless people is ruined or endangered by air pollution. Many different chemicals in the air affect the human body in negative ways. Just how sick people will get depends on what chemicals they are exposed to, in what concentrations, and for how long. Studies have estimated that the number of people killed annually in the US alone could be over 50,000. Older people are highly vulnerable to diseases induced by air pollution. Those with heart or lung disorders are under additional risk. Children and infants are also at serious risk.

Positive sides of outdoor learning

Todays increasing environmental problems obligates everyone to take responsibility. Students often come across the phrases "recycle" or "reduction of pollution", but not always is the background nor the causes explained thoroughly. Students cannot develop their environmental disposition without effective, meaningful teaching, that outdoor education provides. Teachers can and should give students deeper knowledge about natural resources and how exactly their deficiency will affect them personally. Direct contact is the best way to learn. Outdoor education is necessary to encourage students to become good stewards and to think globally but act locally regarding the environment and environmental issues. Also, outdoor education is not only important to raise environmentally responsible citizens, but to have positive impact on student's development. Several studies are claiming

More recently the effects of exercise- induced stress has been extensively studied in relation to the immune response (Brydon et al 2005,Morita et al., 2005). In psychology stress is studied in terms of psychosocial factors, which in turn are thought to affect physiological and immunological responses. In addition to questionnaires that are largely used to measure mood, emotions, the steroid hormone cortisol has been widely measured in experimental psychology to explore physiological stress responses. In addition to physiological responses to external stressors the stress response to emotions has also attracted the interest of researchers. Investigations of how emotions are regulated has mainly looked at emotional states

Stress

Stress What is stress? Physiologists define stress as how the body reacts to a stressor, real or imagined, a stimulus (erguti) that causes stress. Acute (terav) stressors affect an organism in the short term; chronic stressors over the longer term. The term stress was first employed in a biological context by the endocrinologist Hans Selye in the 1930s The effects of stress: Alarm is the first stage. When the threat or stressor is identified or realized, the body's stress response is a state of alarm. During this stage adrenaline will be produced in order to bring about the fight-or-flight response (võitle või põgene) Resistance is the second stage

I would like to discuss the restrictions of cinema as such – what these are, how do they affect the medium. For example time limit of the films, budget, how it affects writer and director, what kind of choices they have to make, and how the audience come into play. Personally, i don’t consider cinema as a restrictive medium. Cinema’s most restrictive feature is time. Filmmakers must fit very good shots edited into very good storyline into one and a half to three hour movie, usually. The reason being, we get uncomfortable sitting long period of time

problems. Many can find it difficult to breathe, especially people who have asthma. Asthma, along with dry coughs, headaches, and throat irritations can be caused by the sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides from acid rain. Acid rain can be absorbed by both plants (through soil and/or direct contact) and animals (from things they eat and/or direct contact). When humans eat these plants or animals, the toxins inside of the things they eat can affect them. It can cause brain damage, kidney problems and even Alzheimer's disease. The countries that are producing the majority of the pollutions that causes acid rain are not that badly affected (Germany, Britain, USA). Instead the wind direction means the acid rain falls in the other places (in Europe : Scandinavia, USA; Canada) Cultural effects Acid rain and the dry deposition of acidic particles contribute to the corrosion of metals (such as bronze) and the deterioration of paint and stone

Psühholoogia bioloogiline-, kognitiivne- ja sotsiaalne vaade

Experiments with animals are still used a lot because this enables psychologists to study specific biological correlates of behavior using invasive techniques (removing or scarring brain tissue). Prior to the development of modern technology, one of the most common ways to study the brain was case study. Often case studies provide researchers with a situation that they could never ethically reproduce in a laboratory. One of the most famous case studies of how brain damage can affect behavior is the study of Phineas Gage by Dr John Harlow. Gage was in a serious accident, where a metal pole pierced his skull and brain. Luckily he survived, losing vision in his left eye. He had no difficulty with speech or language, but the balance between his intellectual abilities and emotional control had been destroyed. He became highly agitated and irrelevant, often impatient and rude. Study to his frontal lobe provided evidence that the brain affects personality and social behaviors.

1. Natural conditions (including soil fertility, pH, aeritation, temperature, moisture, organic matter, food and energy supply, microbial association and interactions) 2. Cultural practices These factors play a great role in determining not only the number and type of organism but also their activities. Variations in any one or more of these factors may lead to the changes in the activity of the organisms which ultimately affect the soil fertility level. Natural conditions Extreme environments such as high-altitude and highlatitude ecosystems are very sensitive to environmental changes. Global warming is hypothesised to alter both above- and below ground processes affecting the soil ecosystem (Asher et al. 2012). As an example, Asher et al. (2012) further proved in their research on humus creation that thermal conditions (due to

All Marketers are liars

In his book, All Marketers are Liars, Seth Godin contends that consumers prefer fantasy to the truth, and that consequently marketers should "live the lie, fully and completely." Stopping short of endorsing marketing methods which might kill people, Godin says that marketers should "give people what they want." The book is telling a story about why marketers must forsake any attempt to communicate nothing but the facts, and must focus on what people believe and then work to tell them stories that add their worldview. HIGHLIGHTS Before marketing, before shopping carts and long before informercials, people started telling themselves stories. Stories make it easier to understand the world. Stories are the only way to spread an idea. Marketers didn´t invent storytelling. They just perfected it. We tell ourselves stories, because we´re superstitious. Stories are shortcuts we use because we ´re too overwhelmed by data to discover ...

Pagulaskriisi mõju Euroopa majandusele

Estonian Business School Majandusteooria ja rahanduse õppetool Pagulaskriisi mõju Euroopa majandusele Essee Indro Madison BEB-1 Õppejõud: Meelis Kitsing Tallinn 2015 2015. aastal kõige rohkem tähelepanu saanud teema on pagulaste sisseränne Euroopasse.

that most of us would agree, when you're attracted to someone, or in love with someone, you would bend to there will. There may be some things that are out of your control; be it because you want so badly to make them happy, or that you so badly want pleasure. However, the passage says that we are forced to feel this attraction, to someone. What about the people that don't want a partner? I believe Rojas makes a good point about what effect love has on us, but it doesn't necessarily have to affect everyone. When I wrote my literal translation, I tried to write something that any modern English speaker could understand, and still feel the compassion in Celestina's statement. When I read the passage, I get strong feelings about love, and I tried to preserve that when switching to English. However, I think that this came out better in my literary version. My literal translation is plain

EU internal Market law. Mid term evaluation assignment

The right to free movement of goods originating in Member States, and of goods from third countries, which are in free circulation in the Member States, is one of the fundamental principles of the Treaty (Art. 28 TFEU). According to its wording, Article 34 TFEU applies to obstacles in trade ‘between Member States’. A cross-border element is therefore a prerequisite for evaluating a case under this provision. Taking into account that described measures affect also import and export of dogs, its fall in the scope of the Article 34-36 TFEU. National legal provisions in question are capable of hindering intra-EU trade2 Is there a measure in form of action or inaction? Measure in question is in form of action - the parliament adopted the prohibitive law. Articles 34-35 TFEU are often characterised as a defence right which can be invoked against 1 Case 7/68 Commission v Italy [1968] ECR 423 2 Case 8/74 Dassonville [1974] ECR 837, paragraph 5.

A letter and an essay

The surface of the Earth seems to be warming as a result of the greenhouse effect, created by a build-up of harmful gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases can occur naturally; however, human activity add to the levels of these gases, causing more problems. Scientists estimate that the average air temperature could climb a few degrees Celsius in twenty years. Global warming will affect humans, animals, and even plants. Obviously, our `precious home' is undergoing dramatic alterations in weather patterns, leading to significant changes in the world's physical environment. Sea temperatures and levels are projected to rise due to the melting of the polar ice caps and thawing of permafrost, which represents an insidious threat to coastal communities throughout the world. Several diverse extreme

spread of weeds in savannas by the removal or reduction of the plants which would normally compete with potential weeds and hinder establishment. In addition to this cattle and horses are implicated in the spread of the seeds of weed species such as Prickly Acacia and Stylo. These alterations in savanna species composition brought about by grazing can alter ecosystem function, and are exacerbated by overgrazing and poor land management practices. Introduced grazing animals can also affect soil condition through physical compaction and break-up of the soil caused by the hooves of animals and through the erosion effects caused by the removal of protective plant cover. Such effects are most likely to occur on land subjected to repeated and heavy grazing. The effects of overstocking are often worst on soils of low fertility and in low rainfall areas below 500 mm, as most soil nutrients in these areas tend to be concentrated in

Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

Biological Control: Using a predator intentionally to fix the pest population size is known as biological control. This technique demands utmost caution and thorough study, as it could go all wrong, if not managed properly. It is very difficult to pick a side in the debate regarding intensive farming. While it is true that agricultural intensification is necessary to meet the ever-increasing population growth, it is also true that intensive use of chemical fertilizers will largely affect the health of human beings, plants, fish, honey bees, frogs, birds, and livestock. There is a tug-of-war between the animal rights activists and farmers of intensive farming. However, the debate is still ongoing, but we hope to see some new inventions or improvements in the near future. Kehalise kasvatuse mõju Pärnu Koidula Gümnaasiumi G1BK1 tüdrukute enesetundele ja meeleolule

in a mental health standpoint. The formulated research question is how does PE affect the mood of Pärnu Koidula Gymnasium G1BK1 girls? In our research we found out how our classmates felt about going to PE and what was their mood before and after the lesson. A hypothesis was formulated that physical activity raises the students’ mood and after PE students feel better but it was not confirmed, it turned out that physical activity does not affect mood and a students energy decreases due to PE and they will not want to go to the next PE lesson. We used a quantitative method and students answered questions to give their opinions by giving answers in a poll. Our motive was to justify the necessity of PE in the study programme. There were no difficulties during doing this work because there were enough sources of learning materials and it was interesting to read them. 25

The cost of production

The costs of production Production Decisions about production require individual agents to make decisions about the allocation and use of physical inputs. · Objectives of agents, technology, availability and quality of inputs determine the nature of these decisions. Since the objectives are often pecuniary, it is often necessary to relate the decisions about the physical units of inputs and outputs to the costs of production. · If the prices of the inputs and the production relationships are known (or understood), it is possible to calculate or estimate all the cost relationships for each level of output. In ...

What has been said about their wives? Listed together, the five Guildsmen appear as a unit. English guilds were a combination of labor unions and social fraternities: craftsmen of similar occupations joined together to increase their bargaining power and live communally. All five Guildsmen are clad in the livery of their brotherhood. T he Cook (est: KOKK): Describe his skills? What could affect the quality of his food? The Cook works for the Guildsmen. Chaucer gives little detail about him, although he mentions a crusty sore on the Cook's leg. The Wife of Bath ( est: EMAND BATHIST): Describe her in terms of looks and character. What was her occupation? What kind of knowledge did she have? Though she is a seamstress by occupation, she seems to be a professional wife
