Recreational use of Pärnu river

The catchment area of Pärnu river is 6920 km2 (For example Emajõe river drainage area is 9740 km2). The output is 70m3/s, mean altitude above the sea level - 50 m, maximum altitude - 78 m, mean flow 64,4 m3/s and precipitation 700 mm.
Main problems are floods , agricultural pollution, pollution from the local communities, drainage system and flood plain grasslands.
There is an excessive flooding in spring . The most known is the Soomaa swamplands flooding in april. It is called to be the fifth season.
A lot of rich soil are situated near the pärnu river, for example some of the biggest farmlands are situated in the Järva county . 83% of phosphorus and 79% of nitrogen originates from human activities of the total discharge of biogenes from Pärnu River basin. The soil does not bind a huge amount of the nutrients.
65 % of the treatment plants are over 15 years of age and most of them are programmed in a way, that when the water level exceeds some point, the sewage water will be sent directly to the outflow or in some cases to some biopools.
There are a lot of straight drainage systems, ditches and dykes near the forests and farmlands which used to be excessively damp . This contributes a lot to the flooding in the spring, because the water will reach the main river in a very short time.
The flood plain grasslands located along the riverbanks are the typical example of plant communities formed as a result of the joint influence of river floods and human activities. They used to maintain the grassland through hay- making but now the endorsements are very low and owners don’t take care of the land at the river bank. Some scientists think that letting the grasslands grow untouched is good for the biodiversity, but this is not the case here. For example eagles, which hunt on these grounds just abandon these areas and move on to nest somewhere else. Also the growth of the bigger trees is hindered by the underwood vegetation, which consist of willow, alder and aspen .
Pärnu river affords many opportunities for tourism and recreational activity. As an example:
  • Fishing: There is a fish farm in Roosna- Alliku that breed rainbow trouts
  • Canoeing: There are several enterprises (e.g. Edela Loodusmatkad OÜ) which offer canoeing trip for a day or up to 3 days . Even our own school has 2 canoes.
  • Wildlife tourism: Along the river basin there is abundance of different wildlife species , for example broad-leaved trees and different bird species, which are under conservation of the environmental law.
  • Swampland tourism: Soomaa National Park is the second biggest natural reserve. Soomaa has been created to protect large raised bogs, flood plain grasslands, paludified forests and meandering rivers . The territory of the national park is mostly covered with large mires, separated from each other by the rivers of the Pärnu River basin

Australia. Most of the lakes of Australia have water in them only after rain. The biggest lake of Australia is Lake Eyre and it is also the lowest point in Australia, at approximately 15 metres below the sea level. The lake is located in the deserts of central Australia. Even in dry season there is usually some water remaining in Lake Eyre. Australian temporary rivers are called creeks. The biggest rivers of Australia are in the eastern part of the country. The Murray River is the largest but the second longest river, only its tributary the Darling river is longer than it. The Murray rises in the Australian Alps and flows north-west. It makes up much of the border of the New South Wales and Victoria. The Murray-Darling river system is one of the largest river systems in the world. There are predominantly dry salt lakes in the flat desert regions of the country lacking in organised drainage.

Using the climate diagram describe the climate of the region. Temperate deciduous forest -Well-defined seasons with a distinct winter characterize this forest biome. Moderate climate and a growing season of 140-200 days during 4-6 frost-free months distinguish temperate forests. Temperature varies from -15° C to 25° C. Precipitation (750-1500 mm) is distributed evenly throughout the year. Temperate grassland- Semiarid, continental climates of the middle latitudes typically have between 25 cm and 50 cm of precipitation a year. Much of this falls as snow, serving as reservoir of moisture for the beginning of the growing season. Warm to hot summers are experienced, depending on latitude. In the winter, grassland temperatures can be as low as -40° C, and in the summer it can be as high 20° C. There are two real seasons: a growing season and a dor

(Some geographers treat the Darling and the lower Murray as a single river, 3,000km long. This is largely a matter of semantics). Today the Darling is in poor health, suffering from overuse of its waters, pollution from pesticide runoff and prolonged drought, possibly the result of manmade global warming. In some years it barely flows at

chain of islands stretching from mainland South-East Asia. The mainland and larger islands are mountainous and rugged, divided by large fertile upland valleys. Fast- flowing rivers from the highlands descend to the coastal plains. A line of active volcanoes stretches along the north coast of the mainland and continues on the island of New Britain. To the north and south of this central mountain range on the main island lie vast stretches of mangrove swamps and coastal river deltas. /1/ Volcanoes and thermal pools are also found in the southeast of other islands. Papua New Guinea offers the greatest variety of terrestrial ecosystems in the South Pacific, including five types of lowland rainforest, 13 types of montane rainforest, five varieties of palm and swamp forest and three different mangrove forests. Two-thirds of the world's species of orchids come from New Guinea. /1/ Birds include 38 species of the bird of paradise, and the megapode and cassowary

The biggest ones are located to the west. The four biggest islands are Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Vormsi and Muhu. The highest point in Estonia and also in the Baltic region is Suur Munamägi. It is 318. above sea level. Estonia is a country of a thousand lakes. The Largest one is Lake Peipsi which is also the fourth biggest freshwater lake in Europe. Lake Peipsi and Lake Võrtsjärv are rich in fish. Estonia has many rivers but only nine of them are longer than 100km. The most important ones are Pärnu River and Emajõgi River Climate Estonia lies in the northern part of the temperate climate zone and in the transition zone between maritime and continental climate. Because Estonia is continuously warmed by the Gulf Stream it has a milder climate despite its northern latitude. Northern latitude means long summer daylight hours (the longest summer day stretches to 19 hours), and dark winters when daylight lasts sometimes only six hours.
