Presentation Floods

Presentation „Floods“ Flood ● A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land. ● Flooding usually happens by overflowing rivers and lakes. ● Floods often cause damage to homes and businesses if they are placed in natural flood plains of rivers. Major causes of floods ● Heavy rainfall ● Huge snow melting ● Tidal waves ● Something blocking the flow of rivers Different types of floods ● Slow-Onset Floods – usually lasts the longest, sometimes up to months. ● Rapid-Onset Floods – does not last so long, up to 2 days only. Usually causes more damage than slow-onset flood. ● Flash Floods – lasts up to few hours. Causes the greatest damages to the society. Deadliest floods ● Huang He yellow river, China 1931 Death toll: 1,000,000-3,700,000 ● Huang He yellow river, China 1887 Death toll: 900,000-2,000,000

Floods and Tsunamis

Floods and Tsunamis Flood is a natural event or occurrence where a piece of land that is usually dry land, suddenly gets submerged under water. Some floods can occur suddenly and recede quickly. Others take days or even months to build and discharge. When floods happen in an area that people live, the water carries along objects like houses, bridges, cars, furniture and even people. It can wipe away farms, trees and many more heavy items. Floods occur at irregular intervals and vary in size, duration and the affected area. It is important to note that water naturally flows from high areas to low lying areas. This means low-lying areas may flood quickly before it begins to get to higher ground.

Recreational use of Pärnu river (essee)

Recreational use of Pärnu river The catchment area of Pärnu river is 6920 km2 (For example Emajõe river drainage area is 9740 km2). The output is 70m3/s, mean altitude above the sea level - 50 m, maximum altitude - 78 m, mean flow 64,4 m3/s and precipitation 700 mm. Main problems are floods, agricultural pollution, pollution from the local communities, drainage system and flood plain grasslands. There is an excessive flooding in spring. The most known is the Soomaa swamplands flooding in april. It is called to be the fifth season. A lot of rich soil are situated near the pärnu river, for example some of the biggest farmlands are situated in the Järva county. 83% of phosphorus and 79% of nitrogen

How global warming will change the way we live in future?

temperature went up by over 0,7 Celsius degree. It looks pretty small number but even slight Climate change leads to serious consequences. Firstly, global warming will cause that glaciers start to melt. And as a result, the water level will raise and cities and villages which are located near oceans and sees will be flooded. Secondly, if we don't stop global warming, we will bserve more examples of extreme weather such as heat waves, storm clouds, which may lead to floods, droughts and forest fires. Next conseqences of global warming is that oceans temperature will go up. It is likely that it will cause an increase in activity of hurricanes, what will cause many unimaginable destructions. Also, ice will start to melting in Alaska, so it will lead to extremination of many species. And to sum up, global warming will definitely change the way we live in future. Those changes will have huge affects on plants and animals life, aconomy and people's health

Secondly, water pollution is also a main issue. Many peole throw rubbish in rivers and lakes. Ships at the sea cause oil problems, where oil flows in the water and causes a lot of damage, like killing the sea animals and also birds, who are on the seacoast, where the oil reaches. When these problems continue, soon we won't be able to swim in a clean body of water and the drinking water becomes unusable. In some places there are floods after the snow melts or in autumn, when raining cause sea level rising. When water retreats, it brings along trash and rubbish from the streets in the sea or rivers. Many peole have built ramparts, to avoid the consequence of floods and also picked up rubbish from coasts, where seawaves have washed the trash. Endangered animals

Global warming and natural disasters

All of these things are dangerous for animals as they live in the forests. People do not care about the nature and they are not aware of the risks. Although these figures are depressing, things have improved recently. Scientists are aware that the Earth is getting warmer and they are trying to make things better, also more information is given out so that people can be ready for serious disasters. One good thing is that developed countries are willing to help countries that survive earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters. To sum up, we cannot avoid global warming or natural disasters, but we can be prepared if the information is given out. This subject is really important and should be discussed more. To make the situation better everybody should think about this and try to figure out what they can do.

Some hydro plants have been operational about 100 years. *Operating labor costs are low as well because the plants are automated. *And Because the hydroelectric dams do not burn fossil fuels, they do not directly produce carbon dioxide. *The reservoirs can also provide facilities for water sports, and become tourist attractions themselves. In many countries farming fish in the reservoir is common. Also large dams can control floods. The reservoirs can also improve transport. on the other hand there are some Disadvantages *Hydroelectric projects can be disruptive to surrounding ecosystems both upstream and downstream. For instance, studies have shown that dams along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts on North America have reduced salmon populations, even thou most dams have fish ladders installed. *Another disadvantage of hydroelectric dams is the need to relocate the people living where the reservoirs are planned

The Dog fence

Sheep and dingoes do not mix. Stations that once sheared 100.000 sheep suffered so many kills that their owners switched to cattle. Others fought back with massive poisoning campaigns and shooting drives. Stations reported annual kills of hundreds of dogs. Day after day people, singly or in pairs travel at the fence filling their days by patrolling at the fence. They fill in the holes, set the traps, replace post, close the gates, and shoot dingoes. Natural forces conspire against the fence. Floods wash it away, rust eats it up, blowing sand buries it, and falling trees crush it. Then there are the animals. Wombats, foxes, and pigs dig holes under it. Hot-blooded bulls and wild camels knock it down. Emus for some reason run with full speed into it and spilt the mesh. Dingoes usually don’t make holes. They just wait to step through one. The repair work is relentless on a fence pressured by weather and wildlife. The work is hard and hot. Unloading post logs, carrying

Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

Many scientists criticized Mr. Hansen's report, and the debate over global warming continues today. Current fears stem largely from the fact that global warming is occurring at such a rapid pace. Models are predicting that over the next century, the global temperature will rise by several degrees. Some scientists still do not think that the effects of global warming are as severe as some people say. They think that droughts, hurricanes, and floods often blamed on global warming might actually have other causes. One major difficulty in studying global warming is the fact that weather data only exists for the last century and a half. As a result, understanding the present and predicting the future are very difficult. Rain forest destruction The atmosphere and oceans are not the only parts of the environment being damaged. Rain forests are being quickly destroyed as well, and their survival is questionable. E.O

In the south, the island state of Tasmania lies in the cool roaring forties. In the north the climate is tropical. Monsoon winds bring moist air from the northwest during summer. This time of high rainfall, between December and March is known as "the wet". In the southern the climate ranges from warm temperate to cool temperate. Winter temperatures can be low but rarely freezing in the southern states. Australia is a land of droughts and floods. The droughts are caused by the EL Nino, a weather pattern which happens when the Southern Pacific Ocean heats up. This causes the wind direction to reserve. Instead of bringing moist air towards eastern Australia, the rain bearing clouds are blown away. An EL Nino occurs every four or five years causing droughts and bushfires. Droughts are often followed by floods. Plant Life A long time ago Australia was separated form other countries. This movement caused the

Global warming will affect humans, animals, and even plants. Obviously, our `precious home' is undergoing dramatic alterations in weather patterns, leading to significant changes in the world's physical environment. Sea temperatures and levels are projected to rise due to the melting of the polar ice caps and thawing of permafrost, which represents an insidious threat to coastal communities throughout the world. Several diverse extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes, are occurring concurrently around the world, giving rise to an unprecedented loss of human life and property. Increases in the frequency and intensity of heat waves and precipitation have also been observed. Consequently, a growing number of exotic animals are now on the verge of extinction. More disappointingly, the above- mentioned climatic changes, combined with heedless deforestation and noxious industrial emissions will not only affect animal life

One example is the Bedouin with his battery radio on board the camel. Submerging natives with floods of concepts for which nothing has prepared them is the normal action of all of our technology. But with electric media Western man himself experiences exactly the same inundation as the remote native. We are no more prepared to encounter radio and TV in our literate milieu than the native of Ghana is able to cope with the literacy that takes him out of his collective tribal world and beaches him in individual isolation. Cialdini raamat

On January 31, 1953 an unrelenting gale pushed fierce North Sea waters across a quarter-million acres of his country, leveling dikes, levees, and thousands of homes while killing 2,000 residents. Soon thereafter, Dutch officials requested and received aid and technical assistance from their counterparts in New Orleans, which resulted in the construction of a new system of water pumps that have since protected the coun- try from similarly destructive floods. One wonders why it seems that the same lev- els of support for New Orleans provided by officials of a foreign government never came from the city's own national government. Perhaps the officials of that gov- ernment didn't think they owed New Orleans enough. If so, those officials would be safe to expect that the residents of New Orleans now think they owe little to government-as voters, volunteers, contributors, and, most regrettably, even as law abiding citizens.
