European yew - plant in Estonia

European yew Ursula 11. kl Description It is a small- to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing 1020 metres. The bark is thin, brown, coming off in small flakes aligned with the stem. The leaves are lanceolate, flat, dark green and highly poisonous. The seed cones are highly modified, each cone containing a single seed long partly surrounded by a modified scale which develops into a soft, bright red berry-like structure called an aril. The arils are mature 69 months after pollination, and with the seed contained are eaten by thrushes, waxwings and other birds. The aril is not poisonous. The seeds themselves are extremely poisonous and bitter, but are opened and eaten by some bird species Toxicity The bark, stem, needles and seeds of the yew are poisonous, although birds can eat the berries without digesting the seed. This dangerous side of t...

Strawberries

strawberries. • Jewel—the most widely grown variety in the Northeast, it has excellent flavor. It is productive and maintains a large fruit size throughout the season. • Lateglow—a reliable late-season cultivar Site Selection Strawberries grow best in a sunny location with deep, well-drained sandy loam soil with a pH of approximately 6.2. The plants do not tolerate extremes in pH, either below 5.5 or above 7.0. It's not good to plant strawberries in an area where they were recently grown. Also planting them where crops in the tomato family ( eggplants, potatoes, and peppers) have been grown. Growing Methods Strawnberries growing location in planting bed should be 30,5 to 61 cm apart in rows that are 122 cm apart. The plants will produce side stems with daughter plants called runners. Managing Planting Watering: Strawberry plants need about 1 inch of water each week, either by rainfall or irrigation

Lady's Slipper

Lady's slipper Common names: American Valerian, Moccasin Flower, Nerveroot, Whippoorwill's-shoe and Yellow Indian Shoe. Bionominal name- Cypripedium pubescens. The plant comes into flowering age only after 10-15 years. Height is 12-30 inches tall. Are found across much of North America, as well as in parts of Europe. This plant grows in the wild in forest lands and meadows, but owing to excessive harvesting, lady's slipper is seldom found growing in the wild. However, to a certain extent, this herb is also cultivated. This plant has only 2 leaves. The color of lady's slipper flowers varies from yellowish to purplish- brown and are borne at the top of an elongated stalk. One petal of the flower changes into a structure akin to a yellow sac, known as the `slipper'.

be removed more easily. Removal of contaminants can also be done through more difficult specific chemical processes. It takes a lot of education to fully understand these purification steps. Physical treatment usually deals with purification steps such as filtration. Water purification methods City water is purified water that was initially raw water taken at an intake station from a river and then sent to a water purification plant, where it became purified to meet water quality standards. A water purification plant can thus be thought of as a facility that treats raw water and removes its impurities, making the water safe. In other words a water purification plant is essentially a factory for producing drinking water. Water can be purified in several ways. Water Purification Facility ( Rapid Sand Filtration Method ) Intake Inlet A facility that is located at a riverbank for taking in water from the river.

Tšernobõl, Chernobyl

The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere and downwind. Two Chernobyl plant workers died on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning. The April 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. It was a direct consequence of Cold War isolation and the resulting lack of any safety culture. The accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firemen within three months and several further deaths later. Acute radiation syndrome was originally diagnosed in 237 people on-site and involved with the clean-up. Of these, 28 people died

Geotermaalenergia

Geotermaalenergia ehk geotermiline energia (ka maapõueenergia) on Maa siseenergia. See on maapõues peamiselt looduslike radioaktiivsete elementide lagunedes tekkiv ja aegade jooksul kivimitesse salvestunud soojusenergia. Teoorias on võimalik kogu maailma energiavajadused täita geotermaalenergiaga. Geotermaalenergiat kasutatakse kas otse soojusenergiana või muutes seda elektrienergiaks. On kolm erineva disainiga geotermaalenergiajaama. Kuiva auru jaamad (dry steam power plant) on kõiga lihtsama ja vanema disainiga. Kasutatakse geotermaal auru turbiinide käima lükkamiseks. Purske auru jaamu (flash steam power plant) on kõige rohkem tänapäeval. Savanna

domestic livestock. As a result much of the world's savannas have undergone change as a result of grazing by sheep, goats and cattle, ranging from changes in pasture composition to woody weed encroachment. The removal of grass by grazing affects the woody plant component of woodland systems in two major ways. Grasses compete with woody plants for water in the topsoil and removal by grazing reduces this competitive effect, potentially boosting tree growth. In addition to this effect the removal of fuel reduces both the intensity and the frequency of fires which may control woody plant species. Grazing animals can have a more direct effect on woody plants by the browsing of palatable woody species. There is

Tuuma energia

All utility-scale reactors heat water to produce steam, which is then converted into mechanical work for the purpose of generating electricity or propulsion. In 2007, 14% of the world's electricity came from nuclear power. More than 150 nuclear-powered naval vessels have been built, and a few radioisotope rockets have been produced. Nuclear life cycle The Nuclear Fuel Cycle begins when uranium is mined, enriched, and manufactured into nuclear fuel, which is delivered to a nuclear power plant. After usage in the power plant, the spent fuel is delivered to a reprocessing plant or to a final repository for geological disposition. In reprocessing 95% of spent fuel can be recycled to be returned to usage in a power plant. What is nuclear energy? Nuclear energy was first discovered by French physicist Henri Becquerel in 1896, when he found that photographic plates stored in the dark near uranium were blackened like X-ray plates, which

How can we reduce air pollution level in cities?

Firstly, we should using the public transport. Everybody can walk and bicycle instead of driving cars. Vehicles emit a lot of harmful gases into the air. Every family member does not need his or her own car. One car for the whole family would minimise the number of cars in cities and air pollution levels will come down. Secondly, people have to recycle. It would help reduce factories work. It will emit less harmful gases into the air. Finally, we should plant more trees in cities and also create more national parks. They produce oxygen. In conclusion, there are many ways to make cities better places to live. We all need to do something, even a little thing can help. Start with youself recycle, use the public transport and plant at least one tree in your life.

Renewable energy

Wind turbines are expensive. Hydroelectric power Hydropower is electricity generated using the energy of moving water. Hydropower is the cheapest way to generate electricity today. It's a clean fuel source that is renewable yearly by snow and rainfall. Hydropower is readily available; engineers can control the flow of water through the turbines to produce electricity on demand. In addition, reservoirs may offer recreational opportunities, such as swimming and boating. A typical hydro plant is a system with three parts: an electric plant where the electricity is produced; a dam that can be opened or closed to control water flow; and a reservoir where water can be stored. Hydroelectric power provides almost onefifth of the world's electricity. China, Canada, Brazil, the United States, and Russia were the five largest producers of hydropower in 2004. The first hydroelectric power plant was built at Niagara Falls in 1879. Negative aspects of hydropower

Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub

The 5th layer: mosses and lichens that grow on tree trunks. Lianas such as wild grape, poison ivy, and Virginia creeper climb the trees to flower and fruit high in the forest canopy. Plant adaptations: The plants have adapted so that they can survive in this biome. The leaves of deciduous trees are broad and quite light. This gives the leaves a bigger surface to capture sunlight to help produce food for the plant. This is called photosynthesis. When the weather gets cold, broad leaves are not good for the plant, as they lose too much moisture and get damaged. So the trees cut off the water supply to the leaves and seal off the leaf stems where they join onto the tree trunks. The leaves are not able to produce the chlorophyll that makes them green. The leaves become yellow, red or gold before they dry up and fall off the trees. Animals:

This region also holds a number of threatened endemic species such as the giant kangaroo rat and the desert slender salamander, and some of the last individuals of the Critically Endangered California condor can still be found here. In fact, it is the largest avian breeding ground in the United States.

What are the benefits of factory work? A factory or manufacturing plant is an industrial building where workers manufacture goods or supervise machines processing one product into another. Most modern factories have large warehouses -like facilities that contain heavy equipment used for assembly line production. Typically, factories gather and concentrate resources: workers, capital and plant. One Benefits of factory work is that , the maschinery makes everything and people, don't have to do ,so much , only controll : is everything working and is everything allright. Factory work benefits is also that , factors make mass productions and thats better than exlusive productions because , mass productions are much cheaper that , exlusive and unique productions. Also become mass productions ready much faster than unique productions and you can make , more productions because machines

Molekulaarbioloogia praksi kontrolltöö vastused

Apoptoos -> läbi mitokondri. Kordamisküsimused 5. prax: 1. Millised taimeraku iseärasused takistavad taimerakke transformeerimast samamoodi kui loomarakke. Milliste tehnoloogiate abil sellest üle saadakse? Erinevalt loomarakust ümbritseb taimerakku paks tsellulooskest, mis on märksa tõsisemaks takistuseks kui lihtsalt membraan. Perhaps the most successful method involves the pathogenic bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which has the innate ability to transfer DNA to plant cells. In nature, this transfer results in formation of plant tumors (crown galls) at the infection site. Molecular biologists, however, have disarmed this bacterium and constructed domesticated strains that no longer cause tumors but transfer any DNA of interest to plant cells. The major disadvantage of the highly efficient Agrobacterium system is that it does not work with all plant species, most notably the cereals.

Kartuli seenhaigused ja tõrje

Lehestik muutub enneaegselt pruuniks ning seejärelkuivab. Iseloomulik on kuivlaiksuse algus lehe tipust. Kuivlaiksus levib jõudsalt ka mugulatele. Mugulatel tekivad sissevajunud, kahvatuhallid tähnid või plekid, mis kattuvad 6 tumeda kirmega ( seenekirme). Joonis 2. Kartuli – kuivlaiksus (ISU Plant Diseases Clinic) Kuivlaiksuse tekkele aitavad kaasa kiired jahedate ööde ja palavate päevade vaheldumised. Ka niiske ja põuase ilma kiire vaheldumine. Haigus on intensiivsem soojade ilmadega , optimaalseks arengutemperatuuriks on 26oC.

had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There are no survivors from any of the flights.Excluding the 19 hijackers, 2,974 people died in the attacks. What is agroterrorism and what can I do to protect myself and my family? Terrorist attacks aimed at reducing the food supply by destroying crops using natural pests such as the potato beetle, animal diseases such as hoof and mouth disease and anthrax, molds and other plant diseases, or chemicals that defoliate vegetation, such as Agent Orange, used in Vietnam.Agroterrorism involves the act of any person knowingly or maliciously using biological or other agents as weapons against the agricultural industry and the food supply-- plants and especially animals. Outbreaks caused by the deliberate spread of animal diseases by terrorists are likely to have much higher costs than natural occurrences or epidemics.

climate, this is why the marine ecosystem is considered to be very delicate and it needs to be protected. All these animals live in saltwater habitats. They live in or near rock pools, the ocean, beaches, mangroves and sand dunes. Deep sea plants Deep sea plants provide food, vegetation for other inhabitants by offering a favorable environment for microfauna and other sea organisms to develop. The microfauna are eaten by fish and other sea inhabitants. Phytoplankton-Deep sea plant that are growing in the experimental mesocosms. Under the microscope they are not much to look at look like small blobs. They grow rapidly, each cell divide into 2. Phytoplankton the deep sea plant growth is often described as `exponential' 1 cell divides in to 2, 2 cells divide into 4and so on. Therefore phytoplankton populations grow quickly also called as `phytoplankton bloom' and the numbers of phytoplankton will increase until there are no nutrients left in the water. Some facts

BMW summary

Basic remuneration in BMW company consists of minimum pay rate in metalworking industry and a 10 per cent BMW supplement. The company has nine wage groups, allowing better gradations for a job well done. Moving to a higher group is possible if a worker regularly performs a higher value activity. Employees could also earn extra pay trough a personal supplement, payable for an individual´s contribution to group results. One of the most outstanding BMW manufacturing facility is the Cowley plant. Unions in that plant won the CIPD People Management Award because of their high performance and very good teamwork. HRM had two high-profile initiatives like establishing self-directed work groups and using an employee suggestion scheme in which individual bonus payments are given in return for cost savings and production improvement suggestions. Here is some statistics how these initiatives worked: · in 2002, production targets were exceeded by more than 60 per cent;

Their solution is to shed the rain as quickly as possible. Each leaf has a spout called a drip tip which acts like a gargoyle on a church, channelling the water away in a quick but controlled manner so the tree crown isn't weighed down. Drip tips may protect the tree in another way. Releasing the rain at drop size reduces the risk of the thin soil below being washed away so easily. An unstable soil structure could spell disaster for the larger trees. Epiphytes An epiphyte is a plant that grows upon another plant (such as a tree) non-parasitically or sometimes upon some other object (such as a building or a telegraph wire), derives its moisture and nutrients from the air and rain and sometimes from debris accumulating around it, and is found in the temperate zone (as many mosses, liverworts, lichens and algae) and in the tropics (as many ferns, cacti, orchids, and bromeliads). Lianas A liana is any of various long-stemmed, woody vines that are rooted in the soil at ground
