My favourite trip: trip through bog

Last summer we decided to go through bogs of Lavassaare. As it was going to be a week-long tramp, we considered our equipment carefully. We made list of everything we needed and then crossed out all that wasn't absolutely nesseccery. We couldn't have better timing: it was clear and warm all week long and it was exact time for wild strawberries and bl...

Links between Estonia and English speaking countries

The first Estonian diplomatic mission in the United States was opened in the same year. The Second World War and the occupation of Estonia resulted in loss of contacts. Most English speaking countries never recognized Estonia's annexation in 1940. During the years of Soviet occupation the embassy in the United States continued its activities from 1940 to 1991. The US government recognised Estonia's diplomatic mission as the legal representative of the Republic of Estonia. This recognition of the legal continuity of the Republic of Estonia is nowadays seen as one of the cornerstones of Estonian-US relations. The occupation of Estonia and the migration of refugees from Estonia opened a new form of contacts. Many of the people who migrated from Estonia in fear of Soviets found...

Education

My hunch is, even average Seattle public schools can turn out well rounded, capable students, if the students receive excellent support at home. I say this because I've met such students. Also, some private schools kids have turned out to be unsuccessful. Probably a loving, involved family atmosphere, in which such things as reading, game- playing, shared meals and other activities all go on routinely -- is more valuable than monetary wealth with a sterile family life. Sure, children can always grow up to beat the odds. But I'd rather cast my vote for public schools and the Republicans' "strong family values" over a private school upbringing that had joyless family life. Yes, the best is to have your cake and eat it, too. But although wealth just won't go around, love, sharing, reading, good manners -- are within...

Bullying

If I see that someone is being bullied Im always going to try to stop it. Sometimes the best thing you can do for a person who is being bullied is just to be there for him or her and be a friend. Whether this means agreeing to walk home with him or her after school, sitting with him or her on the bus or at lunch, trying to include him or her in your school or social activities , or just spending some time with him or her and trying to understand what he or she is going through. I know what feeling you have when someones is calling you with nasty names or talking rubbish about your parents. It will make such an anger inside you that you really want to kill that person who is bullying you. It's hard to talk about serious things with adults sometimes, but they can help to stop bullying. Tell an adult that you...

Health

Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable and, over a period of time, can lead to unhealthy weight gain. Limit screen time. Limit screen time. What's screen time? It's the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games (console systems or handheld games), and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding, and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time, not counting computer use related to school. Be active Figure out which activities you like best. Not everyone loves baseball or soccer. Maybe your passion is karate, or kickball, or dancing. Find ways to be active every day. You might think of going to your doctor as something you do only when y...
