Environmental issues in Estonia

Environmental issues in Estonia The Earth is considered to be the most beatiful planets in the Universe. But our planet is threaten by environmental problems. Even a small country like Estonia can make difference. Our capital city is fighting against air pollution. But people produce much refuse and ways of recycling are getting old. Water pollution is also a problem in Estonia. We have factories that let their waste run into rivers. One of the biggest problems in Estonia is air pollution. Our air is polluted by exhaust fumes, because today we have a lot of cars, buses and other machines. In 2009 we had 407 cars to thousand inhabitants, which is lower than European Union average, but this number is still high. Because cars produce gases that contain carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide in the air causes global warming, which is the result of the greenhouse effect. Tallinn wants to fight

Lake Eyre, Torrens, Frome and Gairdner are the remains of a vast inland sea which once extended south from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Rivers Australia has only few rivers. Many of them are full of water only after it rains. There are many temporary rivers called creeks. The biggest rivers are in the east. All the rivers in Australia are short. Water pollution

Water pollution Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater caused by human activities, which can be harmful to organisms and plants and for all of us. First, we have to talk about the causes of water pollution. Domestic households, industrial and agricultural practices produce wastewater that can cause pollution of many lakes and rivers. Industry is a huge source of water pollution, it produces pollutants that are extremely harmful to people and the environment. Dumping of litter in the sea can also cause huge problems. Different items take different lengths of time to degrade in water. Oceans are polluted by oil on a daily basis from oil spills, everyday shipping and dumping. Secondly, it is very significant to know about dangers of water pollution.

Jane Eyre

Plot introduction Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character. The novel goes through five distinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead, where she is emotionally abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations; her time as the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family at Marsh's End (or Moor House) and Morton, where her cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester. Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism. It is a novel considered ahead of its time. In spite of the dark, brooding elements, it has a strong sense of right and wrong, of morality at its core. There are several Christian aspects underlying the plot that mold its character and essence.

New Zealand

It lies about 1600 kilometres southeast of Australia, its nearest continental neighbour. New Zealand belongs to Polynesia, a large island group. The country consists of two main islands The North Island and the South Island and several dozen much smaller islands. The population is 4.1 million. New Zealand is a beautiful country of snowcapped mountains, green lowlands, beaches and many lakes and waterfalls. No place is more than 130 kilometres from the coast. Lakes, rivers, and waterfalls are found throughout New Zealand. Most of the lakes lie in the volcanic plateu of the North Island and in glacial valleys near the Southern Alps of the South Isaland. On both islands the rivers rise in the mountains and flow down to the sea. The rapid flow of New Zealand's rivers makes them important sources of hydroelectric power. New Zealand has hundreds of waterfalls. Sutherland falls on the South Island is the fifth highest waterfall in he world.

Estonia

• In 1939-1940, Estonia was occupied and (according to e.g. the USA, the EU, and the European Court of Human Rights) illegally annexed by the Soviet Union as a result of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. During the war Estonia was occupied b yNazi Germany in 1941, then reoccupied by the Soviet Union in 1944. Estonia regained independence in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR and joined the European Union in 2004. Rivers, Lakes, Waterfalls Estonia is a country of thousand of lakes. In the Estonian territory there are about 1200 natural lakes whose water area exceeds 1 ha. The largest of these is Lake Peipsi, which is the fourth largest freshwater lake in Europe. Most of Estonia's lakes are small and are found in the south of the country. Larger lakes such as Lake Peipsi and Lake Võrtsjärv are rich in fish. One can find rare species of fish such as the lake whitefish and the Peipsi smelt in Lake Peipsi

Environment

air that we breathe, becomes dangerous to our health. The ozone layer around the Earth, there is a special type of oxygen called ,,ozone". Ozone is important because it stops ultraviolett radiation from the sun. Many aerosol sprays and factories destroy ozone and they have made a very big hole in the ozone layer. This means that too much ultraviolet radiation now enters the Earth. This is very dangerous because it can cause cancer. Poisonous chemicals also cause acid rain, that destroyes plants, rivers, lakes and buildings. Acid rain can travel thousands of miles, so pollution in one country can become acid rain for another country. So how to avoid the worst? Lets talk about cars, which are the main means of transport in our everyday life, they are useful and take us to the place, where we want to go. But lets be honest, they have also negative aspects. Like heavy traffic in the morning, while you are going to work and in the evening, when you are about to go home. Cars also, like factories,

fertility. Some places are covered by different plants and some are not, imagine a desert, where isn't growing anything. I'm sure you know there are many ecological problems today. It is the pollution of seas and oceans, dissapearance of many species of animals and plants, acid rains, destruction of the ozone layer and etc. In spite of this, people are still harming the enviroment. The great number of cars contribute much to the air pollution. Many factories are built near rivers into which they put their chemical waste. Amounts of industrial and city waste are placed near the lakes and rivers. Before I stop, let me just say that everyone can start by theirselves . We should keep nature clean, we shouldn't throw garbage there, where it doesn't belong. Finally, may I say that, there is a great need for environmental education. Children of all ages should be taught about the man´s relationship to nature. They should be educated that this

What might attract foreigners to Estonia?

There are four seasons in Estonia- spring, summer, autumn, winter. I think they make Estonia very special. Another thing is the climate. It is not too cold in winter or too warm in summer. Winters are usually snowy and you can go skiing and ice skating. In the summer you can enjoy days at the beach. The capital city of Estonia is Tallinn, which has a very beautiful Old Town. Pärnu is the summer capital, which attracts people with its beautiful beach. There are a lot of isalands, lakes and rivers in Estonia. Saaremaa is the biggest island, and it is very beautiful. Saaremaa has a lot of places to visit like Angla's Windmill park, different churches, camping places. Hiiumaa is another island, but it is smaller than Saaremaa. There are also a lot of places to explore. Estonia is a small but beautiful counrty. There are a lot of sightseeings and many places to see. You can enjoy the beautiful and refreshing nature.

environmental challenges. The combination of 300,000 tons of dust from the burning of oil shale by power plants in the northeast part of the country and airborne pollutants from industrial centers in Poland and Germany poses a significant hazard to Estonia's air quality. Estonia's water resources have been affected by agricultural and industrial pollutants, including petroleum products, which have also contaminated the nation's soil. Some rivers and lakes within the country have been found to contain toxic sediments in excess of 10 times the accepted level for safety. The nation's land pollution problems are aggravated by the 15 million tons of pollutants that are added yearly to the existing 250 million tons of pollutants. In 1994, 24,000 acres of the country's total land area were affected. Radiation levels from the nuclear accident at Chernobyl exceed currently accepted safety levels.

Acid rain

forms of acidic precipitation such as snow. Acidic deposition occurs in two ways: wet and dry. Wet deposition is any form of precipitation that removes acids from the atmosphere and deposits them on the Earth's surface. Dry deposition polluting particles and gases stick to the ground via dust and smoke in the absence of precipitation. This form of deposition is dangerous however because precipitation can eventually wash pollutants into streams, lakes, and rivers. Acidity itself is determined based on the pH level of the water droplets. PH is the scale measuring the amount of acid in the water and liquid. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 with lower pH being more acidic while a high pH is alkaline; seven is neutral. Normal rain water is slightly acidic and has a pH range of 5.3-6.0. Acid deposition is anything below that scale. It is also important to note that the pH scale is logarithmic and each whole number on the scale represents a 10-fold change.

lakes. The largest of these is Lake Peipsi, which is the fourth largest freshwater lake in Europe. Most of Estonia's lakes are small and are found in the south of the country. Larger lakes such as Lake Peipsi and Lake Võrtsjärv are rich in fish. One can find rare species of fish such as the lake whitefish and the Peipsi smelt in Lake Peipsi. Võrtsjärv is famous for its catches of pike-perch and eel, which are regarded as a delicacy. There are also many rivers in Estonia, but only ten of them are longer than 100 kilometres. The most important rivers are the Pärnu River and the Emajõgi River. Estonia has more than 1 500islands. The largest of these is Saaremaa,. Saaremaa is followed in size by Hiiumaa, Muhu and Vormsi. The islands and the coastal areas of the mainland are interesting owing to the fact that they are on the migratory route for waterfowl. Twice a year -

The Mayor Environmental Problems in Estonia

Secondly, huge amounts of waste are being produced every day and it is all because of overconsumption. Although, in recent years peoples knowledge about recycling and using eco-friendly products have improved, there are more landfills in Estonia than ever before. The government should take some actions and instead of talking about recession, improve recycling programs. Last but not least, abuse of the natural resources is also a big problem in Estonia. Big fatories let their waste run into the rivers without cleaning it and farmers use man-made fertilizers. Their actions spoil groundwater. We must not take water for granted but we should conserve it. To sum up, we all should help the environment. We need to change our attitude, behaviour and habits and inform the public with the help of the media and the problems will eventually improve. Merit Vislapu 11R
