Hapnikul on kaks levinud allotroopset vormi: dihapnik ehk lihtsalt hapnik (O2) ja trihapnik ehk osoon(O3). Dihapnik on stabiilne gaas, mis temperatuuril ­183° Celsiust kondenseerub siniseks vedelikuks. Ta moodustab mahuliselt umbes 21 % Maa atmosfäärist. Vesinik lihtainena on lõhnatu, värvitu ja maitsetu gaas. Kõige kergem gaas, mis on õhust 14,5 korda kergem. Keemis temperatuur on -253 oC. Ei lahustu hästi vees.
