Kevin Lynch into practise. The visual structures of Tartu and their importance to the image of the city were clarified. During field work Tartu was viewed from several observation posts. In doing this it become clear that all five elements of the city, reported by Lynch were present in Tartu. The most numerous were landmarks, there were almost 20 of those in the area under observation. Most of them in the town centre area, where they formed sort of a cluster. Majority of landmarks are built in the last decade, indicating that newly built structures are important to the image of city. Two most important landmarks in Tartu are Emajõe Ärikeskus (Emajõe Business centre) and Tigutorn (Snail Tower). These are most easily spotted in the city and these are also the buildings that most characterize Tartu. Four more visual elements besides landmarks were studied in Tartu. These were edges, districts, nodes and paths
