PSYCHOLOGY PART 1: CORE Biological level of analysis Outline principles that define the biological level of analysis. 1) Behavior can be innate, because it is genetically based. Evolution may play a key role in behavior. 2) Animals may be studied as a means of understanding human behavior. 3) There are biological correlates of behavior. Cognitions, emotions and behaviors are products of the anatomy and physiology of our nervous and endocrine system. Explain how principles of the biological level of analysis may be demonstrated in research. 1) Correlational studies: Study by Buss, who hypothesized that across cultures, men will prefer to marry younger women because of greater reproductive capacity and women will place greater value on a potential mate's earning

Challenges of childrens participation A Case Study of active citizenship in Cadle Primary School

Active Citizenship in Cadle Primary School: A Case Study 20 Conclusion 29 Bibliography 32 Appendices Appendix 1: The United Convention of the Rights of the Child Appendix 2: Interview with Jamie Richards, the Head Teacher of Cadle Primary School 2 Abstract: Children inherently have had a rather tenuous relationship with citizenship. Similarly to how women were once viewed, children have not been considered as subjects of rights due to their perceived incompetence and irrationality. Currently, children are not considered as being rational and capable of exercising responsibility until the age of majority, the age of 18. However, the adoption of the U.N Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989 granted for the first time the recognition for children as worthy individuals with rights of their own

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

Besides, as plastic is less expensive, it is one of the most widely available and overused item in the world today. When disposed, it does not decompose easily (if ever), and pollutes the land or air nearby when burned in the open air. Even recycling doesn’t cut down on plastic, as it essentially uses the existing plastic, albeit in a new form. What are the solutions to plastic pollution? 1. Shop friendly - plastic bags were once a modern convenience but can be efficiently replaced by reusable cloth bags. Also, try to avoid bringing plastic bags at home and purchasing items with too much of packaging. Use metal or glass reusable bottles. 2. Get rid of bottled water - many companies now sell reusable water bottles as a substitute. 3. Forget plastic food containers and replace them by reusable containers. Bring your to-go mug with you to the coffee shop 6

Education

It is possible to be a technological genius, say a computer nerd, without social skills or civil conscience. I'd rather have as a neighbor an illiterate janitor with an easy-going, friendly disposition. Hence, I value what we might call character more than specialist knowledge from an antisocial person. God knows we want everyone to be a well-mannered genius. But humans are not cut out to be happy like pigs in a pen. We instead have insatiable brains, with mental appetites. So our goal is to balance the brainwork with hearts and smiles. "Facts served with sauce." Where does common sense fit on? Is it teachable? To a degree, what we mean by common sense is simply learned experience. Something more exists, though. Those who we praise for common sense may be quick-witted, steady-nerved, and efficient at practical decision-making. It is likely some of those traits depend on genetic brain makeup. In any case, for purposes of an

Chocolate Lavender (Lilac) Taupe (UK: Lilac-based caramel) Cinnamon Fawn UK: Fawn-based Caramel Red Cream Apricot Amber Light Amber ?? Black, chocolate and cinnamon are all versions of the same gene. With the exception of "red" which is a special case, genes are inherited in pairs - one from each parent. Some genes are dominant over others and only the dominant one will be expressed (show up). The other gene (the recessive) will still be lurking in the background and can be passed on to offspring. Depending on which pairing a cat inherits, it will be one of those basic colours. The fact that at it may look different depends on many other genes which alter the way in which these three basic colours are expressed.

psychological stress. Humans, whether interacting with each other or their environment have emotional reactions that are individually regulated. Emotion is a response to a situation that one considers to be relevant to his or her goals (Gross & Thomson, 2007). Gross and Thomson (2007) have presented a modal model of emotion, that illustrates the process; situation attention appraisal response. Situation can be either external or an internal mental presentation that is attended to on the basis of an individual appraisal that leads to emotional response. This emotional response can influence the situation and can change behaviour. These emotional responses are linked to changes in autonomic and neuroendocrine systems, which are essential for metabolic support when preparing the body for action. Since emotion can influence important processes like learning, decision-making, memory and consequently health and welfare of the

Fourth, insufficient recognition has been paid to the role of other modalities of expression in some forms of pictorial representation(e.g., Duncum, 1986; Golomb, 1994; Kindler &Darras, 1997b, 1998; Korzenik, 1995; Wolf, 1994; Wolf & Perry, 1998) . Critics of the traditional stage models of development argued that alternative explanations are necessary to account for the range of pictorial systems that children begin to develop early in life and to engage in research relating to the reasons for selecting specific pictorial solutions. It has been pointed out that even very young children have at their disposal more than one pictorial system and they choose among them as a function of their representational intentions and purposes (Bremmer & Moore, 1984). The notion of the significance of purpose- or telecology- of pictorial behavior in the discourse about development of graphic abilities has been at the

Intragenomic Profiling Using Multicopy Genes: The rDNA Internal Transcribed Spacer Sequences of the Freshwater Sponge Ephydatia fluviatilis Liisi Karlep, To~nu Reintamm, Merike Kelve* Department of Gene Technology, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn, Estonia Abstract Multicopy genes, like ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA), are widely used to describe and distinguish individuals. Despite concerted evolution that homogenizes a large number of rDNA gene copies, the presence of different gene variants within a genome has been reported. Characterization of an organism by defining every single variant of tens to thousands of rDNA repeat units present in a eukaryotic genome would be quite unreasonable. Here we provide an alternative approach for the characterization of a set of internal transcribed spacer sequences found within every rDNA repeat unit by implementing direct sequencing methodology. The prominent allelic variants and their relative amounts c

professional, or aspiring professional, in a large variety of organizations dedicated to getting us to say yes. One aspect of what I learned in this three-year period of participant observa- tion was most instructive. Although there are thousands of different tactics that compliance practitioners employ to produce yes, the majority fall within six basic categories. Each of these categories is governed by a fundamental psycholog- ical principle that directs human behavior and, in so doing, gives the tactics their power. This book is organized around these six principles. The principles- reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity-are each discussed in terms of their function in the society and in terms of how their enor- mous force can be commissioned by a compliance professional who deftly incor- porates them into requests for purchases, donations, concessions, votes, or assent. ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

and Arvo Pärt. In its best and exact sense symphonism means the creation of a sublime philosophical idea in music in an intense extensive and developing form. Symphonism is a way of thinking through the medium of music and therefore perhaps the most prefect way in its singularity. Only an artist whose inner world is rich in thought and perception and who is endowed with a strong faculty of logical thinking and powerful fantasy, can develop into a symphonist. In symphonism both the dynamics of inner and outer world conflicts, collisions and dialectics springing from the synthesis of opposing forces are revealed. Due to these qualities symphonism becomes apparent in opera, oratorio, concerto and chamber music. However, the broadest opportunities for the method are pronounced in orchestral music. From a historical standpoint we can divide the evolution of Estonian symphonic

Energy use for transportation Gasoline is used mainly by cars, motorcycles, and light trucks; diesel is used mainly by heavier trucks, buses, and trains. Together, gasoline and diesel make up 86 percent of all the energy used in transportation. There is currently a push to develop vehicles that run on fuels other than petroleum products, or on blended fuels. Today, there are some vehicles that run on electricity, natural gas, propane, and ethanol. Hybrid-electric vehicles combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors, reducing the amount of fuel required for moving a vehicle. This is why hybrid-electric vehicles can get more miles per gallon of gasoline compared to vehicles that run on gasoline alone. 13

species. Humans would increasingly be drawn to and fascinated by them. As the consciousness of human beings developed, flowers were most likely the first thing they came to value that had no utilitarian purpose for them, that is to say, was not linked in some way to survival. They provided inspiration to countless artists, poets, and mystics. Jesus tells us to contemplate the flowers and learn from then how to live. The Buddha is said to have given a “silent sermon” once during which he held up a flower and gazed at it. After a while, one of those present, a monk called Mahakasyapa, began to smile. He is said to have been the only one who had understood the sermon. According to legend, that smile (that is to say, realization) was handed down by twenty- eight successive masters and much later became the origin of Zen. Seeing beauty in a flower could awaken humans, however briefly, to

optimize activities they execute to stay within a limited budget. This, of course, is the opposite of what the client is expecting. This leads to conflicts, errors, and omissions in the project documentation, which in turn leads to waste of time (idled labour, equipment, etc.) and money in the construction phase. According to the DB model, the client directly contracts with the DB team to develop a well-defined building program and a schematic design. After that, the DB team estimates the total cost and time needed to carry out the construction work. The good thing with this model is that modifications can be made in the early phase of design, reducing the money and time spent on doing it. After the cost and time required are settled on by the client and DB contractor, from this point on, the contractor basically gets full control over the project, giving the client less flexibility

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas at room temperature. It has a pungent, distinct odor and may cause a burning sensation to the eyes, nose, and lungs at high concentrations. Formaldehyde is also known as methanal, methylene oxide, oxymethylene, methylaldehyde, and oxomethane. Formaldehyde can react with many other chemicals, and it will break down into methanol (wood alcohol) and carbon monoxide at very high temperatures. Formaldehyde is naturally produced in very small amounts in our bodies as a part of our normal, everyday metabolism and causes us no harm. It can also be found in the air that we breathe at home and at work, in the food we eat, and in some products that we put on our skin. A major source of formaldehyde that we breathe every day is found in smog in the lower atmosphere. Automobile exhaust from cars without catalytic converters or those using oxygenated gasoline also contain formaldehyde. At home, forma

Gordon Moore suggests that integrated circuits would double in complexity every year. This later becomes known as Moore's Law. “Each new chip contains roughly twice as much capacity as its predecessor, and is released within 18- 24 months of the previous chip.” CDC's 6600 supercomputer, designed by Seymour Cray, performed up to 3 million instructions per second -- a processing speed three times faster than that of its closest competitor, the IBM Stretch. John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz develop the BASIC programming language at Dartmouth College. BASIC is an acronym for Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. Texas Instruments receives a patent on the integrated circuit. 1965 Digital Equipment Corp. introduced the PDP-8, the first commercially successful minicomputer. The PDP-8 sold for $18,000, one-fifth the price of a small IBM 360 mainframe. The speed, small size, and reasonable cost enabled the PDP-8 to go into thousands of manufacturing plants, small

Teaduslik revolutsioon

A scientist is an expert and for some reason we have grown to trust experts. The scientists, the technicians, the experts they must know the answers to our questions. We are surrounded by science whether we recognize it or not. Just about everything we see, touch, smell and hear, is a product of science. Furthermore, science has a language all its own, a language which uses expressions like: rational, method, methodological, systematic, rules, laws, behavior, experts, technology and so on. Science provides a world view, a way of making sense out of the apparently random and meaningless experience of our lives. The origins of this world view emerged full blown in the Scientific Revolution of the late 16th and 17th centuries. The Revolution itself was European it was cosmopolitan. Its short term effects were felt throughout the Continent and in England
