05144023 Compare and contrast the `direct` perception theory of Gibson with the `constructivist` perception theory of Gregory. Which provides a better account of human perception? Sensation involves physical stimulation of the sense organs, while perception is the organisation and interpretation of incoming sensory information. The Gestalt theorists first identified many of the principles that dominate in human visual perception. As Dowell (1995) has observed: "To perceive seems effortless. To understand perception is nevertheless a great challenge" (cited in Gross, 2005, pp 244). This essay will look at Gregory's theory and Gibson's theory of visual perception whether one or the other offers a better explanation of human visual perception.
later. Memory also depends on one last process: retrieval. In retrieval, material in memory storage is located, brought into awareness, and utilized. In sum, psychologists consider memory as the process by which we encode, store, and retrieve information. Each of three parts of this definition – encoding, storage, and retrieval – represents a different process. Forgetting unnecessary information is as essential to the proper functioning of memory as is remembering material. Sensory Memory. The term “sensory memory” encompasses several types of sensory memories, each related to a different source of information. There is iconic memory, which reflects information from our visual system; echoic memory, which stores information coming from ears; and corresponding memories for each of the other senses. Short-Term Memory: Our Working Memory. Short-term memory is the memory store in which material first has meaning,
moment, which triggered amnesia (e.g. stroke, head trauma). ANTEROGRADE TRANSPORT – Transport of materials, e.g. neurotransmitter molecules, along the axon, away from the neurone body to axon terminals* where the material is needed. It uses neuronal cystoskeleton, i.e. the system of neurotubules and neurofilaments which make a kind of scaffolding inside a neurone. APHASIA – Absence of speech. ASSOCIATION CORTEX – Areas of the cerebral cortex which are involved in higher processing of sensory information. They integrate new information with that stored in the memory. ATP – Adenosine triphosphate, one of the so-called high-energy compounds produced by the mitochondria* and needed as an energy donor in many cellular activities. AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM – A part of the peripheral nervous system responsible for regulating the activity of internal organs. It includes sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
species as can be imagined and any serious consideration of their cognitive, social and general mental faculties deemed futile. I can give example about sheep memory. Every summer, just about time when apples are cooked, my mothers sheep flock goes to find appletrees. They could go there every season and after winter in barn it would be obvious that they wouldnt even remeber but they do. What senses do you think sheep has? Sensory discrimination abilities and their uses Sheep like other species have adapted thier senses to achieve remarkable discrimination skills. These allow them to identify importnant individuals and objects in their environment and communication of social signals. Popular belief tends to emphasise the absolute importance of smell for sheep in line with many other mammals, however as we shall see this another misconception with all three major senses playing essential roles. cybersex addiction, cyber-relationship addiction, net compulsions, information overload and Internet addiction. These findings supports the importance of the Internet addiction. Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. This suggests that it's important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises. One anticipated finding was that you are at greater risk of Internet addiction if you suffer from anxiety, you are depressed, you have any other addictions, you lack social support, you're an unhappy teenager, you are less mobile or socially active than you once were or you are stressed. The results of this study indicate that there are 5 different symptoms of Internet addiction
These receptor cells can translate or transduce such physical stimuli into electrical changes, which will then trigger a nervous impulse in other neurons. Receptor cells are like money changers, exchanging the various energies impinging from the other world into the only currency acceptable within the nervous system- the nervous impulse. · Sensory neurons: neurons that convey impulses from receptors toward the rest of the nervous system . In many cases, transmission and transduction are separate functions that are entrusted to different cells. In vision and hearing, there are receptor cells which transduce optic stimulation and air pressures into electrical changes in the cell. These changes in the receptors trigger impulses in sensory neurons that transmit their info to other

The scores were read 18 - 20 hours post application. The irritation score was 8 (on a scale of 0 -10). Studies in Humans Formaldehyde causes skin irritation in humans. Transient and reversible sensory irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract has been observed in clinical studies and epidemiological surveys. Airborne concentrations associated with sensory irritation are above 0.3 to 0.5 ppm, eye irritation being the most sensitive endpoint. Moderate eye, nose and throat irritation occurs at 2 to 3 ppm. However some individuals may experience adverse effects such as watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat; coughing; wheezing; nausea; and skin irritation at lower

Estonian. She started writing when she was only 13 years old and she was also at a very young age when she started reading. She was a lyric poet who wrote about life's different sides. She wrote about things that most of the other people would have never dared to. She was a writer who described nature in a way that no one else had ever done it before. One of her works "Hääl varjust" ("A voice from the shadow") is a great analyze of society. She was also in a grouping called Siuru that wrote sensory poems. She was the leader of the group and she was called Princess in there. She was the only woman in that grouping. Her poems from her younger years helped people who were same age as she was, get free from restrictions. She influenced other writers with her mature and deep way of seeing the world and usage of traditional form. When she was a refugee, her creations gave people confidence and hope for staying alive while war. Last writer I am going to talk about is Lydia Koidula

It is of special importance when considering urban environments scale of size, time, complexity. The first chapter will develop basic ideas, later chapters will apply them to several American cities. Cues used in structuring and identifying environment: visual sensations of color, shape, motion, polarization of light, smell, sound, touch, kinesthesia, sense of gravity, perhaps even electric and magnetic fields. There is consistent use of and organization of definite sensory cues from the external environment. This organization is fundamental to the efficiency and to the survival of free-moving life. Getting lost in the process of way-finding, the strategic link is the environmental image. Clear image enables one to move about easily and quickly. An ordered environment can do more than this; it may serve as a broad frame of reference, an organizer of activity or belief of knowledge.

Men tend to have a "fight or flight" response to stress situations while women seem to approach these situations with a "tend and befriend" strategy. Psychologist Shelley E. or speak and were exposed to cold, autumn weather. About 48 hours later they started to have hallucinations, often about their ancestors. The researchers took blood samples from the monks before the ceremony and immediately after the monks reported seeing hallucinations. They found that serotonin levels had increased in their brains. Serotonin activated the hypothalamus and the frontal cortex resulting in hallucinations. They concluded from this study that sensory deprivation triggered the release of serotonin, which actually altered the way the monks experienced the world. The application of such research has improved the lives of many people, because drugs have been developed stimulating or blocking certain neurotransmitters. Psychologists however, consider the role of neurotransmitters on behavior, but do not solely rely on it to explain behavior. Brain technology has developed rapidly during the past century and is now used

kinnitust, et telepaatia, kui mõtete edastamine ilma igasuguse kommunikatsioonita, on võimalik. ABSTRACT The aim of the current research is to find additional proof of the existence of telepathy. In order to do that, repetitive Ganzfeld experiment was performed. This is an experiment that is conducted between two people, in course of which one of the participants tries to mentally send a picture to the other person, who is in ganzfeld state. Ganzfeld state is a state of mild sensory deprivation, which makes the brain try to compensate the lack of normal audiovisual input by producing visions. Earlier researches have given reason to believe that telepathy exists and the outcomes of our experiments confirmed that, too. The results of our research exceeded the percentage one can expect by chance (25%) by 20,5 percentage points, which means that the percentage of successful experiments from all of the experiments was 45,5%.

Instead of the specialized illusion of the third dimension on canvas, cubism sets up an interplay of planes and contradiction or dramatic conflict of patterns, lights, textures that "drives home the message" by involvement. This is held by many to be an exercise in painting, not in illusion. In other words, cubism, by giving the inside and outside, the top, bottom, back, and front and the rest, in two dimensions, drops the illusion of perspective in favor of instant sensory awareness of the whole. Cubism, by seizing on instant total awareness, suddenly announced that the medium is the message. Is it not evident that the moment that sequence yields to the simultaneous, one is in the world of the structure and of configuration? is that not what has happened in physics as in painting, poetry, and in communication? Specialized segments of attention have shifted to total field, and we can now say, "The medium is the message" quite naturally

ühenduses üksikute lihaskiududega. Refleksid vajavad käivitumiseks ärritajat väliskeskkonnast, kuid toimuvad seejärel automaatselt, ilma et loom või inimene tahtlikult nende kulgu kontrollida saaks. Tuntuim ja üks lihtsamaid reflekse on põlverefleks. Osalevad vaid kaks närvirakku, nendevaheline ühendus paikneb seljaajus. Kui arst koputab kummihaamriga põlvekedra all olevale kõõlusele (patellary tendon), erutub sensoorne närv (sensory nerve). Erutus kandub seljaajus (spinal cord) paiknevale motoorsele närvile (motor nerve), mis omakorda sunnib reie nelipealihase (quadriceps muscle) kokku tõmbuma. Seepeale sirutub jalg automaatselt. Kuna peaaju selles ei osale, ei allu liigutus ka tahtlikule kontrollile. Esimesena uuris 20. saj. alguses põhjalikult reflekse inglise füsioloog Charles Sherrington. your mind. The body's intelligence is, of course, an inseparable part of universal intelligence, one of its countless manifestations. It gives temporary cohesion to the atoms and molecules that make up your physical organism. It is the organizing principle behind the workings of all the organs of the body, the conversion of oxygen and food into energy, the heartbeat and circulation of he blood, the immune system that protects the body from invaders, the translation of sensory input into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain, decoded there, and reassembled into a coherent inner picture of outer reality. All these, as well as thousands of others simultaneously occurring functions, are coordinated perfectly by that intelligence. You don't run your body. The intelligence does. It also is in charge of the organism's responses to its environment. This is true for any life-form. It is the same intelligence that brought

" What is its verification condition? A first thing to notice is that "the" set of experiences that would confirm that sentence is in a way conditional, on one's hypothetical vantage point. We might try something like this: If you walk into the room from the direction of this door here, you 106 Theories of meaning will have an experience as of a chair at the head of the table. But even that depends. It depends on whether you have your eyes open, and it depends on whether your sensory apparatus is functioning properly, and it depends on whether the lights are on, and . . . . These qualifications do not foreseeably come to an end. If we try to build in the appropriate hedges ("If you walk into the room, and you have your eyes open, and your sensory apparatus is functioning, . . . "), more qualifications crop up: Are you walking forward rather than backing into the room? Has something been interposed between you and the chair? Has the chair been camouflaged

In one study (Craig 8{ Prkachin, 1978), subjects who received a series of electric shocks felt less pain (as indicated by self-reports, psy- chophysical measures of sensory sensitivity, and such physiological responses as heart rate and skin conductivity) when they were in the presence of another subject who was tolerating the shocks as if they were not painful. In spring 1917 a literary group called Siuru (the name of a mythical bird in the national epic Kalevipoeg) was formed. Its members included Friedebert Tuglas, Marie Under, Artur Adson (1889- 1977), Hendrik Visnapuu (1890-1951), August Gailit (1891-1960), Johannes Semper (1892-1970). They represented the neo-Romantic spirit, Symbolism and Impressionism; avoiding acute social problems they preferred to glorify sensory enjoyment and physical beauty. In these early years Marie Under had already shown her extraordinary talent, offering in her poetry an exalted and luxuriant feeling for nature and Mankind. The others in the group published their articles, essays, short stories, poetry and, following the traditions of Young Estonia, promoted foreign art and literature. Yet the group broke up, due to the difficult socio-political climate and internal dissension on creative principles, in 1919.
age of the building and its neighbors, I enjoyed the relative quiet of my tree-lined street before I reached the bustle and flow of traffic on Broadway. One day soon, I hoped to blend right in, but for now I still felt like a fraudulent New Yorker. I had the address and the job, but I was still wary of the subway and had trouble hailing cabs. I tried not to walk around wide-eyed and distracted, but it was hard. There was just so much to see and experience. The sensory input was astonishing-the smell of vehicle exhaust mixed with food from vendor carts, the shouts of hawkers blended with music from street entertainers, the awe-inspiring range of faces and styles and accents, the gorgeous architectural wonders...And the cars. Jesus Christ. The frenetic flow of tightly packed cars was unlike anything I'd ever seen anywhere. There was always an ambulance, patrol car, or fire engine trying to part the flood of yellow
Horror is hair-raising. Some scientists think this may be a survival from hairier times in human history, when having your thick pelt of hair stand up when threatened would make you look bigger and scarier, as many animals will swell up or ruffle up their fur when facing threats. 358 T H E W I S D O M OF THE BODY A tip for designers of sensory experiences: A sudden blast of chilly air can trigger a shuddering effect in audiences, especially if they are keyed up for it by some emotional or musical manipulation. T h e chill can trigger the graveyard shudder of fear or a more exalted form of physical reaction, like awe, wonder, or spiritual rebirth. T h e effect of shuddering, in which the muscles of the body, especially the arms and back, involuntarily ripple or spasm, is associated w i t h other emotional
