Swifts A Modest Proposal

Alongside with the exquisite use of satire and cynicism the reader can also trace the paradoxical nature of the Swift's work. The fact that an Englishman proposes barbarous prescriptions for the Irish ridicules the highly civilized society of England. By calculating the number of children, who can become a "delicacy" for the nobility and talking that child's skin would make "admirable gloves for ladies" and "summer boots for fine gentlemen", Swift indirectly comes to the severe criticism of the ruling class. The words "admirable" and "fine", he thus uses, put even more emphasis on his negative attitude to the situation. I assume, that being an Irish by birth Jonathan Swift feels a deep affection for his nation, thus the pamphlet was created in such particular form to mock the cultural arrogance of the English and to stress the Irish subjection and inertness. Sift has not felt without attention another important issue the Religion. A Modest

The current monarchy has changed into constitutional monarchy. The role of the queen or the king is to represent the nation; actual ruling of the nation is in the hands of the parliament. It is such an old tradition and a national symbol that it should continue on.

In Gaelic speaking Ireland song entered into every aspect of life from birth to work to keening for the dead. The musical activity of the ruling class centered around Dublin. It was European music and very important at banquets and ceremonial occasions. Introduction and history of the European Union

TRANSFER OF COMPETENCES The current division of competences between the EU and Member States is not set in stone. However, the reduction or extension of EU competences is a delicate matter which requires the consent of all Member States and necessitates a revision of the Treaties. Two different types of cases can be brought before the Court of Justice: references for preliminary rulings and direct actions. Preliminary ruling procedure Requests for a preliminary ruling – when national courts ask the Court of Justice to interpret a point of EU law. The national courts in each EU country are responsible for ensuring that EU law is properly applied in that country. But there is a risk that courts in different countries might interpret EU law in different ways. To prevent this happening, there is a ‘preliminary ruling procedure’. If a national court is in doubt about the interpretation or validity of an EU law, it may – and sometimes must – ask the

The psychology of serial killers "But she or he was a kind, sympathetic person!" is a common cry after ruling that someone is guilty of serial murder, because serial killers are normal people. There are lots of other problems with trying to profile serial killers - for example, Finnish serial killers tend to be alcoholics. German serial killers tend to have lower-than-average intelligence. groups adhere to. Shari'ah constitutes a system of duties that are incumbent upon a Muslim by virtue of his or her religious belief. The Koran set the rights, the responsibilities and the rules for people and for societies to adhere to. Muhammad provided an example, which is recorded in the hadith books, showing how he practically implemented those rules in a scoiety. Many of the Sharia laws that differ are devised through Ijtihad where there is no such ruling in the Koran or the Hadiths of Islamic prophet Muhammad regarding a similar case. As Muhammad's companions went to new areas, they were pragmatic and in some cases continued to use the same ruling as was given in that area during pre-Islamic times. If the population felt comfortable with it, it was just and they used Ijtihad to deduce that it did not conflict with the Quran or the Hadith. This made it easier for the different communities to

economic privileges that they enjoy were not acquired by the possession or exercise of great talents, but by the accident of birth. Social inequality. The apparatus of social hierarchy is amazingly complete. It is manifest in the Court with its great expense and elaborate display; the country house with its ancient associations and dependent village; the segregation of a group of schools (ironically called ,,public" schools) to provide each new generation with the manners and habits of ruling class; the clubs and social life of London; the columns of ,,Society" gossip in the newspapers and the differences of clothing and accent by which members of the ,,classes" can instantly recognise one another. We should respect our fellow creatures because they are good or clever, gifted or wise not because they happen to possess advantages of wealth or power. were and how events actually happened.1 The same can be said of chronicles written by German B. Russow, who praised Swedish rule, and D. Fabricius, a Catholic Pole who favored Polish rule and rendered a Polish perspective of history. Russian history during the imperial period also shows such an ideological influence. Juri Fiodorovitsch Samanarin, for example, strove to explain to the Russians its mission and identity as the ruling people, not merely a minority, 1 Johann Renner, "Liivimaa ajalugu 1556-1561" (Tallinn: Olion, 2006), 2-13. and to show to the native peoples that they were second rate citizens. Jefgraf Vassilievitsch Tscheshikhin also displayed such partiality when he wrote, "There can be no place in Russia . . . for any patriotism other than Russian patriotism."2 Their and other histories raised the place of Russians to that of victor and liberator, contrary to the truth that this was not always the case

In 597 the pope send a monk called Augustine to Canterbury the capital of the king of Kent. He managed to make many ruling families to accept Christianity but he wasn't successful in spreading it among ordinary people. However the Celtic church was successful at it and Celtic bishops were also accepted in the Anglo Saxon areas. The Anglo Saxon church was more interested in power and authority but the Celtic church was only interested in the hearts of ordinary people. ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

Six of these roads met in London, a capital city of about 20,000 people. Outside the towns, the biggest change was the growth of large farms called ‘villas’. Many of these belonged to the richer Britons, or ‘New Britons’, who were, like the townspeople, more Roman than Celt in manners. The villas had many workers and were usually close to towns so that the crops could be sold easily. The Romans made use of the Celtic aristocracy to govern the province and encouraged the ruling class to adopt Roman dress and the Roman language. They brought the skills of reading and writing to Britain. They trained the sons of tribal chiefs in the liberal arts. Eventually many townspeople and the richer landowners in the country began to use Latin in their speech and writing, and the toga came into fashion. But most of the population, the peasantry, remained illiterate and Celtic-speaking. Roman soldiers and traders brought Christianity, and in the fourth century, the

When there are many people who rule in the others interest, it is called Democracy, but when they rule in the others interest, it is called Polytheism. (Kilp, 2010) Conclusion To conclude, I must say that ruling with political power is necessary, because every society needs some kind of leader. Usually it does not even matter is he or she good or bad, does one people rule the state, a few people or many people. There are many different ways to get political power. For example from nature, from force etc. There are also different views about naming forms of government, for example Platos and Aristotles. I also added Andrew Heywoods opinion, who is a political scientist. I

For centuries Toompea was always inhabited by the ruling classes. In the Middle Ages, it was the place where the bishops and the nobility resided. Here the landed gentry built their beautiful town houses. Most of the remaining buildings were erected after the big fire on Toompea in 1684. Historically, the fortress on Toompea consisted of two parts: the small fortress (today's Toompea Castle) and the big fortress (the rest of Toompea). The hill, with an area of 8 hectares, was the perfect location for a fort where

The Witch Trials in Salem

witch, how to put a witch on trial, and how to punish a witch. In the modern Western world, witchcraft accusations have often accompanied the satanic ritual abuse moral panic. Such accusations are a counterpart to blood libel of various kinds, which may be found throughout history across the globe. Though witch-craze took different forms at different times and places, but never lost its essential character: that of a ruling class campaign of terror directed against the female peasant population. Witches represented a political, religious and sexual threat to the Protestant and Catholic churches alike, as well as to the state. Many people were executed, and others were imprisoned, tortured, banished, and had lands and possessions confiscated. The majority of those accused were women. Current scholarly estimates of the number of people executed for witchcraft vary between about 40,000 and 100,000

The biggest segment is North America, accounting for nearly 30% of revenue (World of Coca-Cola). Role in IPE Coca-Cola's role in international political economy is undoubtedly very great. occupation of Britain, they left very little behind. Most of the villas and temples the impressive network of roads and the cities they founded, including Londinium, 4 were soon destroyed. The next invaders were the Anglo-Saxons. They came from nowadays Germany, Holland and Denmark. In 1066 the last successful invasion was made by French-speaking Normans. French became the language of the ruling class, Latin was the written language. By the 14th century, however, English began to replace both French and Latin, but the English language still contains numerous French and Latin borrowings. The Hundred Years War between England and France and the Black Death had a great negative influence on Britain. Over 1/3 of the population died. During the fifteenth century the throne of England was claimed by two rival groups - the House of York and the House of Lancaster. As the

Translation history

in English. A similar phenomenon in Estonia could be the use of German in official correspondence and writing in earlier centuries. However, as time has gone by, such notions of an accepted class related norm in languages has become subject of criticism. People are considered more equal and thus no language variety can be considered better than another. Sometimes ideology may also come into play with regard to the language of different social classes. For instance, in the target culture, the ruling ideology might not permit the use of any other language variety in literature than the standard dialect. The questions regarding this topic have also been touched upon earlier in the lessons: how is one to translate the language of someone of the lower classes in England into Estonian? Since we don’t have social classes, could lower class English just be translated into the language of the less educated? Similar examples could also be brought with regard to the

The Middle Ages

The Hundred Years War was a series raids, sieges and naval battles. The Wars of the Roses The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought in medieval England from 1455 to 1487 between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The name Wars of the Roses is based on the badges used by the two sides, the red rose for the Lancastrians and the white rose for the Yorkists. Major causes of the conflict include: 1) both houses were direct descendents of king Edward III; 2) the ruling Lancastrian king, Henry VI, surrounded himself with unpopular nobles; 3) the civil unrest of much of the population; 4) the availability of many powerful lords with their own private armies; and 5) the untimely episodes of mental illness by king Henry VI. The Wars of the Roses ended with the killing of Richard (the House of York) by Henry VII. Henry VII married Elizabeth of York. He merged the rival symbols together into a red and white Tudor Rose. Despite having tortured a squirrel in the woods, he admits that he fears becoming evil, and takes on the identity of Locke in order to influence events. When the bugger war ends, he ends the fighting on Earth through the Locke Proposal, and becomes Hegemon, basically ruling the world. Graff Although the character appears only at the beginning of the chapters and occasionally in the chapters as well, he is the main adult character in the novel. It is Graff who decides what will be done to Ender in order to shape him into a commander, and although he knows that this will put Ender through a lot of difficult situations, he says that, in the end, he will be Ender's friend.
