were under the authority of the Soviet Union, increased the independence efforts. People didn't want to live like this anymore, it was based on fear and commands. The start of the Estonian public announcement of the reindependence is probably the Singing Revolution. To begin with, the Singing Revolution was a non-violent wish expressing and embarked on the Soviet Union to fall apart. The Singing Revolution is a commonly used name for events between 1987 and 1990 that led to the restoration of the independence of Estonia and also Latvia and Lithuania. Afterwards, there was a spontaneous mass night-singing demonstrations at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds in June 10-11 in 1988. Singing revolution is known as a revolution without blood. Its aim for Estonia was to separate from the Soviet Union. The Singing Revolution lasted over four years, with various protests and acts of defiance. Independence was declared on the late evening of August 20 in 1991.

joint holdings. Except for shrines and temples, these groups manage forests to produce income. In general, these forests are not very large: the average forest area per establishment was 3.7 ha in 1990. Groups operating forests of less than 100 ha control 67% of the total area. Hence forests are not necessarily owned by a few large concerns. Private ownership of forestland was officially permitted after the Meiji restoration of 1868, which marked the end of feudalism. Previously, forestland was legally owned collectively for the use of local communities. After the Meiji restoration, most of these ,,commons" became privately owned land, although some still exist and are operated by permanent joint holdings. In many cases, common forests were divided equally among members of the community, and individual parcels of forestland were small. -----------------------

The 17th century in England

It is known as a struggle between Parliament and the throne. 1625 came to rule Charles I, who was proved to be politically stubborn. In 1642 civil war broke out between the Cavaliers and the Roundheads. Oliver Cromwell was a puritan who brought the Roundheads to the victory and temporarily ended the monarchy in 1649. Charles I was beheaded. Oliver Cromwell ruled England for 9 violent years. The return of the oldest son of Charles I in 1660 is called the Restoration. In 1660 the Royal Society of London was established to promote scientific research. In 1688 the Glorious Revolution was without bloodshed or violence. The 1689 Bill of Rights limited monarch's powers. Parliamtary government was established. 1665 the Great Plague, 1666 the Great Fire.

A letter to the editor

Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing about the recent article in Tuesday’s edition of the Westvale Herald to express my disapproval of the Westvale Council’s decision to sell Longheath Park to a property developer. In my opinion, this is a really bad idea. Firstly, if the park is sold there will be no open spaces left. Therefore, children will not be able to play freely, and people will have nowhere to walk their dogs, ride their bicycles and so forth. What is more, there will be very few green areas in town. Obviously, this is very unhealthy, as people need fresh air and natural surroundings for good health. Finally, the town will be crowded and built up. This will mean that there will be more traffic and pollution, and the town will no longer be a nice place to live. To sum up, I think it is a terrible idea. I hope that the council will find a better way to deal with Longheath Park. Maybe they will fin...

Some rooms were refurnished in Estonian national romantic style after the designs of the architect Olev Siinmaa. From 1946 until 1991 the palace housed the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. Due to the deterioration of the building, large restoration works were started. The government of Sweden supported the works that lasted over 9 years, with 21 million Swedish kronor. On July 22, 2000 the Kadriorg Art Museum, branch of the Art Museum of Estonia, was opened in the renovated palace. Kuressaare castle

During 1904-1912 the convent building was renovated by architects W. Neumann and H.Seuberlich. The two upper floors of the Defence Tower were constructed anew; the window frames in the cloister of the main floor were restored and the wall between the chapel and the festive refectory rebuilt; some of the doors were relocated and windows widened; new ovens and staircases were built; stone plates with the coats-of-arms of the local noblemen were mured into wall of the cloister. In 1968 extensive restoration works were started and carried out on the basis of the plan made by K. Aluve. I recommend all to visit Kuressaare Castle, because it is a fascinating historical place for adults or children. Kristel Kiisk 10A

TEXT The Irish Problem

Settlement'. There was now no part of Ireland where Catholics owned more than ½ of the land. The main reason for this was Cromwell's belief in fundamental Protestantism and hatred of Catholicism. He claimed to be acting on God's behalf and expelled about 1000 Catholic priests from Ireland. ~New Modal Army~ The New Model Army of England was formed in 1645 by the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War, and was disbanded in 1660 after the Restoration. It differed from other armies in the series of civil wars referred to as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in that it was intended as an army liable for service anywhere in the country (including in Scotland and Ireland), rather than being tied to a single area or garrison. Its soldiers became full-time professionals, rather than part-time militia. To establish a professional officer corps, the army's leaders were prohibited from having seats in either the House of Lords or House of Commons

Theatres in Estonia

In the early 20th century, these societies turned into professional theatres, some of which, the national opera Estonia for example, function even today. The scheme from society to theatre is a general phenomenon, because all the present state theatres once belonged to societies. Theatre played an important role in advancing and safeguarding the spirit of Estonians during both the period of last century's national awakening and the oppression of the Soviet regime. After the restoration of Estonia's independence, theatre lost its political significance and became one area of culture amongst many others. Nowadays, theatre has to prove its worth by means of art only. Estonian theatre arts is a mixture of German and Russian theatre. Theatres in Estonia, like elsewhere in the world, may be divided into three categories according to their form of ownership: state, municipal and private theatres. One of the six state theatres in Tallinn is the Russian Drama Theatre

Estonian Independence Day

After declaring its independence, Estonia was forced to fight a war of independence against Soviet Russia and German forces. During this war, Estonia secured its borders and concluded the Tartu Peace Treaty with Soviet Russia on February 2, 1920. Independence Restored As the hope of restoring the nation's independence grew stronger in the late 1980s, the people began to publicly celebrate the Day of Independence already before the end of the Soviet occupation. Since the restoration of independence on August 20, 1991 Independence Day continues to be a day of celebration and a day of reflection for the Estonian people.

KIek in de kök

Kiek in de Kök tower The cannon tower Kiek in de Kök was founded in 1475-1483. The name was first recorded in the description of the second siege of Tallinn in 1577 as Kyck in de Kaeken, later on several forms of the same name were used, such as Kik (Kyk) in de Kok, Kiek in die Küche, Pulffer-Thurm Giecken Köck. In 1696 the present name Kiek in de Kök was also mentioned, meaning "peek into the kitchen" in Low German. And true enough, it was possible to watch what the enemy was doing in their "kitchen" i.e. on position lower down from the about 38m-high tower. Already in the late 15th century the tower was somewhat reconstructed. The outer walls were made thicker and the tower got a diameter of 17.3 m. The walls are 4 m thick but the tower was then lower than today. The waterproof upper floor made of cobblestones was open and had 22 embrasures in its parapet. The parapet must have been covered by some kind of a roof but the middle part o...

Tallinn town hall

TALLINN TOWN HALL Tallinn Town Hall is the only surviving Gothic town hall in Northern Europe. Built in the heart of Tallinn, next to a marketplace, the Town Hall has witnessed trade and social activities for over 700 years. It has still remained the most important representational building in town. The building history of the Town Hall goes back to the 13th century, but it acquired its medieval appearance in 140204. It was as early as 1248 when King Eric IV Ploughpenny of Denmark granted the Lübeck Charter to Tallinn. Relying on that document a town council was elected from amongst merchants of the Hanse and started convening in the Town Hall. It is possible to state on the basis of research findings that a meeting place of the magistracy and a goods depot in the form of a small, fortified town hall, constructed of local limestone, existed in its present location already in the mid-13th century. The town hall first mentioned in a re...

The steeple with its slender spire was once 159 m high and, as such, the tallest in in the world in the 1500s. This tall spire and a part of the valuable interior was destroyed in the fire caused by the lightning in 1625 and when it was restored in 1651, it was made lower. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the steeple was struck by lightning six times. The present height 123.7- m dates back to the restoration of 1820-1840, after the fire of 1820 that devastated the church. problem of the Moors in the south. His campaigns were successful and, on July 25, 1139, he obtained an overwhelming victory in the Battle of Ourique, and straight after was unanimously proclaimed King of Portugal by his soldiers. Afonso then established the first of the Portuguese Cortes at Lamego, where he was crowned by the Archbishop of Braga, though the validity of the Cortes of Lamego has been disputed and called a myth created during the Portuguese Restoration War. Afonso was recognized in 1143 by King Alfonso VII of León and Castile, and in 1179 by Pope Alexander III. Afonso Henriques and his successors, aided by military monastic orders, pushed southward to drive out the Moors, as the size of Portugal covered about half of its present area. In 1249, this Reconquista ended with the capture of the Algarve on the southern coast, giving Portugal its present-day borders, with minor exceptions.

The 4 oldest Churches in Tallinn

htm The Organ The Tallinn Dome Church organ, that was built in 1878 by an organ builder of Weissenfeld Friedrich Landegast , rebuilt in 1913/14 by a famous German organbuilding enterprise Orgelwerkstatt Wilhelm Sauer and renovated by Christian Scheffler (Frankfurt/Oder), has an outstanding position in world organ-history. The organ is a marvelous mixture of both Classicism and late Romanticism. During the intensive renovation in 1998´s seven months the complete cleaning and restoration of the pipes, the creation of the missing registers and pipes, the renewing of the leather parts, the cleaning and renovation of the keyboard, the control of the bellows and the intoning of the organ and the tuning on the original pitch 435 Hz at the temperature 15 ´C was done. As in 1914 the I World War cancelled the full accomplishment of the organ and the following decades hurt the pipery, that is only now on its 85 th anniversary that this instrument sounds on its highest

Trafalgar Square

2,400 selected members of the public spent one hour on the plinth. They were allowed to do anything they wish to and could take anything with them that they could carry unaided. Fountains When the square was first built in 1845, the fountains' primary purpose was not aesthetics, but rather to reduce the open space available and the risk of riotous assembly. They were originally fed by a steam engine behind the National Gallery from an artesian well underground. Further restoration work became necessary and was completed by May 2009. The pump system was replaced as only one of three pumps was functioning. LED lighting system Pigeons The square used to be famous for its feral pigeons, and feeding them was a popular activity with Londoners and tourists, but it is banned now on the square's pedestrianised North Terrace, the entire perimeter of the square, the area around St Martin-in-the-Fields Church,

Topic - Libraries

The library was established in 1918 by the Provisional Government of the Estonian Republic. The first users of the library were the members of Parliament. During the Soviet occupation the library became a regular public library. The work of the library changed radically: all links with foreign libraries were called off and Russian publications dominated. In the '50s the library was renamed after Kreutzwald and its collection had reached a million items. The restoration of the Republic of Estonia changed the role of the library, for it was renamed the National Library of Estonia. Today its aim is to collect and permanently preserve documents published in Estonia. 6. Children and books One key to children's reading success is making their reading experience entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable. Allowing them to choose their own reading materials give awareness of what their reading interests are.

Technology Home reading

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/health/re search/27eye.html? pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=technology A Burst of Technology, Helping the Blind to See Blindness first began creeping up on Barbara Campbell when she was a teenager, and by her late 30s, her eye disease had stolen what was left of her sight. Reliant on a talking computer for reading and a cane for navigating New York City, where she lives and works, Ms. Campbell, now 56, would have been thrilled to see something. Anything. Now, as part of a striking experiment, she can. So far, she can detect burners on her stove when making a grilled cheese, her mirror frame, and whether her computer monitor is on. She is beginning an intensive three-year research project involving electrodes surgically implanted in her eye, a camera on the bridge of her nose and a video processor strapped to her waist. The project, involving patients in the United States, Mexico and Europe, is part...

Tartu ajalugu

In the 18th century the first stone bridge in the Baltics was built at the end of the Town Hall Square, with two triumph arches and a lifting centre, which was dedicated to Catherine II and was opened for traffic in 1784. The bridge was destroyed in World War II, now it can only be admired by way of the model bridge, which was created in 2004. Tartu was hit by a great fire in 1775, during the course of which a large part of the city center burned down. Catherine II ordered the restoration of the town and assigned 25,000 rubles for building the stone bridge. The bridge was meant as her gift to the town of Tartu. Preparatory work was begun in the spring of 1776, and the bridge was completed and opened for traffic in 1784. The Stone Bridge became one of the symbols of Tartu. In 1941 the Soviet forces blew up the bridge, and in 1944 the last remaining part was destroyed. Arched Bridge Since 1959, at the place where the historical Stone Bridge spanned the banks of the Emajõgi

Aniliini riskianalüüs (eng)

In mice, aniline induced micronuclei in several studies, but only at very high dose levels in the toxic range. Negative results have been found in the analysis of sperm head anomalies and equivocal results in the dominant lethal test. e) Other toxic effects, e.g. immunotoxicity and local toxicity - No information available. f) Ecotoxicity Toxic to aquatic organisms. Accumulates in their bodies. 6. Contact The primary method of obtaining aniline - restoration of nitrobenzene. Not found in nature. To my regret there is no information about aniline contact with humans on the internet, so I will just make a guess and inference from all I have raed on this theme. Aniline can be dangerous to workers during transport (damage equipment, etc.) Dyes are made from aniline, chemists who are engaged, are at risk of poisoning. Aniline can be absorbed through the skin or by inhalation. Thus, the danger increases. If the worker does not use

autonomy for Jamaica. Despite labor and other reforms, black riots recurred, notably those of 1938, which were caused mainly by unemployment and resentment against British racial policies. Jamaican blacks had been considerably influenced by the theories of black nationalism promulgated by the American expatriate Marcus Garvey. A royal commission investigating the 1938 riots recommended an increase of economic development funds and a faster restoration of representative government for Jamaica. In 1944 universal adult suffrage was introduced, and a new constitution provided for a popularly elected house of representatives. Economy Jamaica is a mixed, free-market economy with state enterprises as well as private sector businesses. Major sectors of the Jamaican economy include agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism and financial and insurance services. Tourism and mining are the leading foreign exchange earners.

Washington, D.C., was being built). When the Adams family moved into the White House, the interior of the building was not quite finished. Construction was completed during Thomas Jefferson's' term (1801-1809). As a means of preserving the history of the White House, no substantive architectural changes have been made on the house since the Truman 4 renovation. Since the Kennedy restoration, every presidential family has made some changes to their private quarters of the White House, but the Committee for the Preservation of the White House must approve any modifications to the State Rooms. Aimed at maintaining the historical integrity of the White House, the congressionally authorized committee works with the First Family--usually represented by the First Lady, the White House Curator, and Chief Usher--to implement the family's proposed plans for altering the home.
