Natural Disasters: Does Mankind Even Stand a Chance ?
Throughout time, man has fought valiantly against the forces of nature . We have successfully climbed the tallest mountains , sailed the greatest seas, and defeated the mighty dinosaurs. But we are no match for nature’s greatest weapon : Natural Disasters. As far as natural disasters go, the deadly trinity of mudslides, whirlpools, and meteors is man’s greatest nemesis.
Mudslides strike without warning and with deadly force . Every day, across the world, unsuspecting villagers are hammered by the force of 36,000 tons of that soft wet dirt known as mud, as it cascades down mountains, rolls across plains, swoops through valleys, and takes flight over cliffs. Once the mud strikes , it leaves the villages and cities in ruins, as houses and other structures are quickly

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS Our environment is constantly changing. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. With a massive influx of natural disasters people need to be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is facing. Current environmental problems make us vulnerable to disasters and tragedies, now and in the future. Unless we address the various issues seriously we are surely doomed for disaster. Current environmental problems require urgent attention. 1. Pollution: Pollution of air, water and soil require millions of years to recoup. Industry and motor vehicle exhaust are the number one pollutants. Heavy metals, nitrates and plastic are toxins responsible for pollution. While water pollution is caused by oil spill, acid rain, urban runoff; air pollution is caused by

Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

The invisible gases that cause acid rain usually come from automobiles or coal-burning power plants. Acid rain moves easily, affecting locations far beyond those that let out the pollution. As a result, this global pollution issue causes great debates between countries that fight over polluting each other's environments. For years, science studied the true causes of acid rain. Some scientists concluded that human production was primarily responsible, while others cited natural causes as well. Recently, more intensive research has been done so that countries have the information they need to prevent acid rain and its dangerous effects. The levels of acid rain vary from region to region. In Third World nations without pollution restrictions, acid rain tends to be very high. In EasternEurope, China, and the Soviet Union, acid rain levels have also risen greatly. However, because acid rain can move about so easily, the problem is definitely a global one. Global warming

most clearly recognized. A further factor is that this dysfunction is actually intensifying and accelerating. The First World War broke out in 1914. Destructive and cruel wars, motivated by fear, greed, and the desire for power, had been common occurrences throughout human history, as had slavery, torture, and widespread violence inflicted for religious and ideological reasons. Humans suffered more at the hands of each other than through natural disasters. By the year 1914, however, the highly intelligent human mind had invented not only the internal combustion engine, but also bombs, machine guns, submarines, flame throwers, and poison gas. Intelligence in the service of madness! In static trench warfare in France and Belgium, millions of men perished to gain a few miles of mud. When the war was over in 1918, the survivors look in horror and incomprehension upon the devastation left

THE CAPITALIST NIGER

Let me talk about the reality here. Let’s assume that you live in Lagos, Nigeria and you want to make a call to Cotonou in Benin Republic, which is less than 100 miles away. You pick up the phone and dial. In most cases, the phone will not have a dial tone, and then the call may not go through. But if you were successful in getting through, you would first have to go through Paris, France before being connected to Cotonou in Africa. Africa, the poorest continent on this earth, with most natural resources, consumes everything as well and produces nothing. We embrace technology and hardly understand how it works. Unlike the Japanese and Asians who buy products from the West, disassemble them, find out how these products work and go on to build a better one, most of us hardly know or understand how these products work. All over the world, the story is the same – twenty-to-thirty something years old raking in money from dealing in the Internet

number is 40 or 100. Today the human population will increase by 250,000. And today we will add 2,700 tons of chlorofluorocarbons to the atmosphere and 15 million tons of carbon. Tonight the Earth will be a little hotter, its waters more acidic, and the fabric of life more threadbare. The truth is that many things on which your future health and prosperity depend are in dire jeopardy: climate stability, the resilience and productivity of natural systems, the beauty of the natural world, and biological diversity. It is worth noting that this is not the work of ignorant people. It is, rather, largely the result of work by people with BAs, BSs, LLBs, MBAs, and PhDs. Elie Wiesel made a similar point to the Global Forum in Moscow last winter when he said that the designers and perpetrators of the Holocaust were the heirs of Kant and Goethe. In most respects the Germans were the best educated people on Earth, but their
