Thanksgiving

TOPIC 4 Thanksgiving In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. It is usually a family day celebrated with big dinners. On this day, Americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year The first Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth in the 17th century. The people of Plymouth had come to America from England. In their native land they had been called Puritans, but they called themselves Pilgrims. When the Pilgrims landed in America they were poorly trained to cope with life in the wilderness. One spring morning an Indian came into the little village of Plymouth . Later, he brought The Indian chief, who gave gifts and offered assistance. The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to hunt, fish and grow food. They also taught them, how to use fish for fertilizer in growing corn, pumpkin and beans. The Pilgrims had a good harvest. Governor William Bradford issued a proclamation establishing a day of Thanksgiving to God.

The first American Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth. The Puritans from England came to America because they were unappreciated. They were called the Pilgrims. They came to America on a ship called Mayflower. September was the worst season of the year for sea crossing. After 65 days they landed at Cape Cod. The Pilgrims suffered a great deal during their first winter, because they were poorly equipped and poorly trained. One spring morning an Indian came and introduced him in a friendly way. The Indian chief offered assistance to the pilgrims and the Indians thought the Pilgrims how to hunt, fish, and grow food. Because of this help they had a good harvest every year. This was something which Edward had no right to do because in those days the King was chosen by a council of wise men. So William had no chance at all. Harold was crowned the King of England on January 5 th, 1066 . William was more than angry when he heard this. He gathered an army all over Europe and started the battle for the crown. William landed in the south of England near a town called Hastings. The Battle of Hastings took place on the 14th of October, 1066 .The Normans outnumbered the Anglo-Saxon forces and were better armed. Normans won the Battle and King Harold was killed, England was invaded. It took several years to conquer the whole England. The most important technological invention

I concidered different inventions but thought, that the ability to move from one point to another in an innoventional and extremely quick way is worth the title. The four engine plane can carry up to 181 passengers and cruise at 600 mph for 5280 miles on a full tank. This has made continetial travelling extremely comfortable, as voyages that formerly took a couple of weeks can now be passed with only 1 day or even less. The first jet flight took off from New York and landed in Paris, soon after that there was a connection between Los Angeles and New York. I can only assume that the tickets had to cost a fortune in the beginning, but the time spared was and is still worth it, as the plane tickets do not even cost so much nowadays, it is perhaps the cheapest and the fastest way to travel. The secound reason why i thought that a plane ment for passengers is the greatest invention is that it is an technological wonder

On June 28, 1914 Franz Ferdinand and his wife were in the third car of a motorcade traveling through Sarajevo to the Town Hall. The Black Hand had several assassins positioned along the route. On the way to the Town Hall, the first assassination attempt occurred. A man named Nedeljko Cabrinovic threw a bomb into the car with the Archduke. Boston Tea Party

Protests resulted, and it was those in Boston that made their mark in history. The Event The first of many ships which arrived at the Boston harbor carrying the East India Company tea was Dartmouth arriving in late November 1773. Thousands attended the protest meetings, every meeting larger than the one before. The crowds shouted defiance not only at the British Parliament, the East India Company, and Dartmouth but at Governor Thomas Hutchinson as well, who was still struggling to have the tea landed. The owner of the Dartmouth and its captain agreed that the tea would be returned to England. However, Governor Hutchinson ordered the harbor to be blocked and he would not allow any tea-bearing vessels to leave until they had been unloaded. When the captain reported Hutchinson's refusal to a massive protest meeting, the participants disguised as Indians and headed toward Boston Harbor, where lay Dartmouth and the newly-arrived Beaver and Eleanor.

Tennis is played on a rectangular, flat surface, usually grass, clay, a hardcourt of concrete and/or asphalt and occasionally carpet (indoor). In most professional play and some amateur competition, there is an officiating head judge or chair umpire, who sits in a raised chair to one side of the court. The umpire has absolute authority to make factual determinations. The umpire may be assisted by line judges, who determine whether the ball has landed within the required part of the court and who also call foot faults. There also may be a net judge who determines whether the ball has touched the net during service. In some tournaments, certain line judges, usually those who would be calling the serve, are replaced by electronic sensors that beep when an out call would have been made. In some tournaments, electric line calls aren't made, but rather are used to assist the linespeople.

The invasion was delayed by a mutiny of the troops, who were eventually persuaded by an imperial freedman to overcome their fear of crossing the Ocean and campaigning beyond the limits of the known world. They sailed in three divisions, and probably landed at Richborough in Kent, although some suggest that at least part of the invasion force landed on the south coast, in the Fishbourne area of West Sussex. The Romans defeated the Catuvellauni and their allies in two battles: the first, assuming a Richborough landing, on the river Medway, the second on the Thames. One of the Catuvellaunian leaders, Togodumnus, was killed, but his brother Caratacus survived to continue resistance elsewhere. Plautius halted at the Thames and sent for Claudius, who

Sandrigham house

Following his death in 1910, Sandringham was left to Queen Alexandra, who continued to live in the 'Big House' in her widowhood until her death in 1925. The new King George V and Queen Mary continued to live in the much smaller York Cottage whenever they visited the estate. The First World War sowed death and destruction even in sleepy Sandringham. On 19 January 1915 Zeppelin L45 crossed the North Sea on the first raid of the war, and several bombs landed on and around the Royal estate. One of the craters filled with water; King George VI later had it enlarged and turned into a duck pond. Like many villages, towns and communities across Britain, the community of the estate suffered its own wartime tragedy. The Sandringham Company was wiped out in the Battle of Gallipoli in August 1915. Trapped in a field which suddenly burst into flames, possibly due to a stray shell, the entire company was killed. In 1920 King George V, Queen Alexandra and

Eventually North America became populated by many different tribes of people. They fished, and where soil permitted, planted crops and farmed the land. After the native people came the Vikings. First they discovered Greenland and after a few years they found America. The next one to arrive in America was Christopher Columbus in 1492. He wasn't actually looking for America. He was looking for a shorter route to the Far East, where he would find valuable silks and spices. Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas which Columbus named San Salvador. He thought he had landed on the Spice Islands near India. This is why he named the people he met Indians. The Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock in 1620 aboard the Mayflower. The Pilgrims had a feast in 1621, after their first harvest. This feast has become known as "The First Thanksgiving." The Civil War was the most bitter conflict within the United States. Much of the western coast is dry and barren. There is a great desert in Australia, and it comes down to the sea on the western and southern coasts. William Dampier was the first englishman to reach Australia. But captain James Cook's explorations on the southeast coast were more important. He was on his way from New Zealand and reached Australia from the southeast. The part of Australia he found was very much different from the country visited by the earlier explorers. He landed in a place of great beauty, rich in plants and flowers, which he named Botany Bay. From Botany Bay James Cook sailed along the east coast as far as the Cape York, where he put up the British flag. The eastern part of Australia became a British colony. The Colonization of Australia The British initially used it as a gigantic prison camp for convicts from Britain. Altogether 160 000 men, women and children were deported from Britain to Australia, where

the Pacific Ocean, and the Hudson River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. History The first people who arrived in the Americas were the Native Americans. Many of them lived in small groups of about 20-50 people. Most of them were very peaceful people, who lived by hunting and collecting food. Other Native Americans lived in small villages, where they had farms. When Columbus reached the Caribbean in 1492 he thought that he had landed in the East Indies in Asia, so he called the people there "Indians". After that thousands of Europeans arrived and they tried to take the land away from the Native Americans, so there were many wars. Native Americans also died from the diseases that the Europeans brought. At first they had to move to the west. But soon the white moved further west into the lands where the Indians lived and there were again many battles.

For centuries Toompea was always inhabited by the ruling classes. In the Middle Ages, it was the place where the bishops and the nobility resided. Here the landed gentry built their beautiful town houses. Most of the remaining buildings were erected after the big fire on Toompea in 1684. Historically, the fortress on Toompea consisted of two parts: the small fortress (today's Toompea Castle) and the big fortress (the rest of Toompea). The hill, with an area of 8 hectares, was the perfect location for a fort where people could find shelter in case of danger or war. Today Toompea attracts many
