Mainly they live on in the eastern and southeastern part of the country, because the middle part of the country is mainly plains and deserts. The eastern part is the place where the big cities are like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane etc. In Sydney and Melbourne together live about 8 million people. The Native Australians The first people who arrived to Australia were the Aborigines. They arrived there about 50 000 years ago. The word aboriginal means the first or earliest known. The word was first used in Italy and Greece to describe people who live there. 6

But the climate remains warm and dry especially in California. The climate on the Atlantic coast is continental with cool summers and rather warm winters with a permanent snow cover in mountainous regions. Further to the south the climate gets warmer, with warmer winters and hotter summers. The south western part of the country is the driest and the hottest. Death Valley is also located there. The second highest temperature on earth 55.5C was recorded in the valley. The place got its name because of gold seekers. Hoping to find a shorter way to gold fields, many of them died crossing the valley during the 1849 Gold Rush. 6 Economy, Agriculture The United States is a country of highly developed economy. Most American industry is located in the eastern and Midwestern parts, around the Great Lakes and also on the Pacific coast. The U. S. engineering products are known all over

The flag with its colours of red (representing the land), black (representing the people) and the yellow in the middle (representing the sun) is a source of pride for Indigenous Australians. The present coat of arms was granted by King George V in 1912. It consists of a shield containing the badges of six Australian states, enclosed by an ermine border. The shield is a symbol for the federation of the states, which took place in 1901. The crest, which is above the shield, is a seven-pointed gold star on a blue and gold wreath. The seven points of the star represent exactly the same thing that they do on the flag. The supporters of the shield are native Australian animals: the red kangaroo and the emu. Usually the coat of arms is depicted on the background of sprays of golden wattle with a scroll beneath it containing the word `Australia'.
The currency of the USA is the United States Dollar. The government of the USA is composed of three coordinate branches: the executive, legislative and the judicial. All the three branches are equal. The executive power is vested in the president, who holds office for a term of four year. At the moment George W. Bush is the president. The president is elected together with a vice-president and will take his place when the president dies or resigns in office. The president of the USA lives in the White House (at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue) Washington, D.C. while he holds office. The Legislative branch Congress consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are a hundred people in the Senate (two from each state) and 435 people in the House of Representatives. At the head of the Judicial branch is the Supreme Court, which has nine judges.

Australia has much underground water. The Great Artesian Basin under the central Lowlands makes cattlebreeding possible thee. The network of artesian wells provides cattle with water. Natural zones The wet forests also called the rainforests occupy the narrow coastal region in the east. In the west they give place to grasslands with some trees called savannas. Farther west the trees disappear and the savannas give place to the bushlands. The real desert occupies the centre of the Western Plateau. In the very southwest there are thin forests of evergreen trees. Plants A rich variety of plant can be found in the natural landscapes of Australia. A lot of species can be found in wet tropical forests in the north and in temperate rainforests in the south.
