Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan Today I'm going to do a presentation about a book called ,,Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan", edited by Yoshiya Iwai. --------------------- Participants in private forestry are classified into six categories: forestry households; companies; shrines and temples; joint holdings; various groups and cooperatives; and habitual joint holdings. Except for shrines and temples, these groups manage forests to produce income. In general, these forests are not very large: the average forest area per establishment was 3.7 ha in 1990. Groups operating forests of less than 100 ha control 67% of the total area. Hence forests are not necessarily owned by a few large concerns. Private ownership of forestland was officially permitted after the Meiji restoration of 1868, which marked the end of feudalism

During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and on top of that, the winter of 1846 was the "severest in living memory". The crop, which previously had provided 60% of the nations' food needs, failed. Many families were evicted because they couldn't pay for their land

To balance the power of the local nobility, the kings gave (sold) charters of freedom (or royal charters) to many towns, freeing the inhabitants from feudal duties to the local lord. The town’s life, courts and economy were controlled by town merchants who formed a wealthy and influential class. Two new landed classes developed in the countryside. They were freeman farmers who rented landlords’ land and bit by bit added to their holdings, and gentleman farmers or landed gentry, that is the knights who devoted themselves to farming. Kings Need Money By the late thirteenth century the king could only raise most of his income by taxation. And taxes could be raised with the agreement of those wealthy enough to be taxed – the merchants in towns and the landed gentry and other wealthy freemen in the country. These were the two classes of people who produced and controlled England’s wealth.
