Barely eighteen, she refused any further influence from her domineering mother and ruled in her own stead. Popular respect for the Crown was at a low point at her coronation, but the modest and straightforward young Queen won the hearts of her subjects. She wished to be informed of political matters, although she had no direct input in policy decisions. The Reform Act of 1832 had set the standard of legislative authority residing in the House of Lords, with executive authority resting within a cabinet formed of members of the House of Commons; the monarch was essentially removed from the loop. She respected and worked well with Lord Melbourne (Prime Minister in the early years of her reign) and England grew both socially and economically. On Feb 10th, 1840, only three years after taking the throne, Victoria took her first vow and married her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Their relationship was one of great love and admiration. Together they bore nine

The distance between the benches marked out on the floor in red lines, is exactly two sword lengths and one foot apart. Members are not allowed to cross these lines, thus ensuring that debates are kept orderly. The chairman of the House of Commons is known as the "Speaker", and he or she presides over each parliamentary session, deciding who can speak. It is structured with an official Leader (The Leader of the Opposition ) and a "shadow cabinet ", consisting of spokesmen for the Opposition each with an official portfolio corresponding to that of a government minister. Most of the time the debates in the House of Commons are devoted to projects of government legislation . Most bills are put formard by the government ministers. However, some time is given to bills tabled by individual MPs (known as Private Members' bills), or to bills tabled by the opposition (known as Opposition motions) . In each session of Parliament,

image processing based methods developed for assessing pilling grade is related to Fourier Transform and Wavelet analysis (see Figure 14). In 2002, Jensen and Carstensen [30] took an image from fabric surface and used a Fourier mask to filter the knitted stitch background from the fuzz and pill. In particular, the Fourier mask has been used to filter the knitted stitch background from the fuzz and pill. A pilling measurement cabinet was specifically designed and developed in [31] (see Figure 15). Captured images were analyzed using appositely developed software based on thresholding and various pilling parameters such as total number of pills, total area of the pills, mean area and number of pills per unit area are measured. Such parameters were, then, compared with the same ones obtained manually, thus showing a good correlation with fabric grading performed by experts.

democracy, with a queen and a parliament that has two houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Supreme power is vested in parliament, which sits for five years unless dissolved sooner. The House of Lords was stripped of most of its powers in 1911, and now its main function is to revise legislation. In Nov. 1999 hundreds of hereditary peers were expelled in an effort to make the body more democratic. The executive power of the Crown is exercised by the cabinet, headed by the prime minister. 12. the 1960s proved unstable. Unrest in the Netherlands Antilles beset the government in 1969, and marines were dispatched to assist police in riot control. The inflation of the 1960s continued into the 1970s as a major political problem. Wage and price controls were imposed in 1970, and taxes increased in 1971. In the elections of 1971 the four-party governing coalition lost its majority, and after two months of efforts a coalition headed by the Anti-Revolutionary Party formed a government. This cabinet fell in 1972, however, and a caretaker government ruled until May 1973, when Joop den Uyl, leader of the Labor Party, was sworn in as prime 13 minister of a five-party coalition. When Suriname attained full independence in 1975, hundreds of thousands of Surinamese immigrants further burdened the Dutch economy. Englishman, including the King. In 1707 the Act of Union united English and Scottish Parliaments. The last monarch of the Stuarts was Queen Anne. The House of Hanover At the beginning of the 18th century the English parliament asked George of Hanover, a Protestant descendant of James I, to become king. George I was a controversial king who spent most of his time in Hanover, leaving the country in the care of the Cabinet. This was eventually headed by Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister and the first to live at 10 Downing Street. During the reigns of George I and George II, Parliament assumed almost absolute responsibility for running the country. Large areas of Canada and India were colonized at the expense of the French. The single greatest threat to George I came with the Scottish Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1719
