The history of Australia
Romet Tagobert
The Australians have lived through many wars, revolutions and governmental problems, leaders, but they've only yet to break down.
The Aborigines arrived in Australia at about 40,000BC, from which Tasmania was cut off by rising water levels at around 8,000BC. Convicts started being transported to Australia in 1770 which was a disaster for the Aborigines. Captain cook arrived in Botany Bay and claimed Australia for Britain . The 18th century life was hard and even small crimes were severe in Britain. Sometimes prisoners would be sentenced to transportation. After the American War of Independence (1775-1783) transportation wasn't possible anymore and the government began looking for another place for the transportees which was selected to be Botany Bay.
On 13.05.1787 11 ships set sail from Portsmouth. 759 convicts were on board , most of them guarded with Captain Arthur Philip in command. The reason for founding a colony in Australia wasn't the riddance of unwanted people. The British may have hoped to found a naval base in the Pacific , sources of timer and flax. They arrived on 26.01.1788. Things were hard for them and food was short. Things gradually improved and a second and third fleet arrived in years 1790 and 1791. Convicts worked on government land but since 1973 those who behaved well were freed and given land. The first free settlers arrived also that year .
Relatively few new people were sent to Australia during the long wars with France from 1793 to 1815. The second governor was John Hunter in 1795-1800 and he was followed by Philip King . Under King the first colonists settled in Tasmania in 1803 , Tasmania was then called Van Diemens Land. In 1813 a path was discovered through the Blue Mountains, that enabled them to spread inland. By 1825 the White population of Australia was about 25,000 with Tasmania having 4,500. The transportation location was again changed to Western Australia and it continued till 1868. The system of granting land ended in 1831 . From then on land was sold .
The rebellions in Australia started in the beginning of the 19th century in March 1804. Some Irish convicts led by Philip Cunningham took part in a rebellion at Castle Hill .
The rebellion quickly collapsed upon a battle with government soldiers and the leaders were hanged . A second rebellion occurred in 1808. William Bligh was made governor in 1806 and at that time rum was used as currency, which he forbade. A group of soldiers led by Major George Johnston arrested him. He was held prisoner until he agreed to leave Australia, however soon after Johnston set sail, he decided to return .
In 1797 Merino sheep were brought to Australia, booming the number of sheep quickly. There was a huge demand for their wool and by 1850 there were 13 million sheep in New South Wales. By then, half of the wool woven in Britain came from Australia/Tasmania.
In 1798 George Bass and Matther Flinders proved Van Diemen's land was seperate from the mainland. The first settlers arriving in Van Diemen's land arrived in 1803. There was a whaling industry in the Bass Strait in the 19th century. Shipbuilding also grew up in Hobard in the mid-19th century. In 1825 Tasmania was seperated from Australia for administrative purposes and transportation ended in 1853 . Soon tin was discovered and a new industry grew. The population of Tasmania grew fast. The University of Tasmania was founded in 1890.
In Tasmania, Whites killed many Aborigines during the ' Black War' of the 1820s. Others died of diseases. The 'war' between Whites and Aborigines began in 1804 with the 'battle' of Risdon Cove . The Governor from 1824 to 1837 was George Arthur. He declared martial law hoping to end the war between them. His attempts failed. And only few survivors were left .

Topic of Australia

Introduction, Location Australia is a country between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is the only country in the world that occupies an entire continent. The mainland covers an area of 7.7 million km² and it is about 3700 km from the most northern point to its most southern point and about 4000 km from east to west. There are also many different seas around Australia, like the Coral and the Tasman Seas in the west or the Timor and the Arafura Seas in the north, where the Indian and the Pacific Oceans meet. Because all seas and oceans near Australia are warm, surfing is a very popular hobby. Political subdivision Australia is divided into six states, which are: · New South Wales · Victoria · Queensland · South Australia · Western Australia · Tasmania New South Wales is the most populous state in Australia. Its capital is Sydney. Victoria is one of the most densely populated states in Australia. Its capital city is Melbourne and it was named after

Australia

Australia Australia is the smallest continent in the world. It is 7.6 million square kilometres big. It is often called the island continent because it is rather small for a continent and very big for an island. There are only five countries bigger than Australia in the World. There are five states in the mainland. Tasmania is also considered as a state so there are six states. The Northern Territory and Canberra are also independent but they are not states. Canberra is the capital of Australia and it is situated between Sydney and Melbourne because both of these cities wanted to be the capital. The population is about 19 million people and growing. New South Wales is the most populated state and Victoria is the most densely populated state. The national language is English. It is English because British settlers came to live in Australia in the past and they brought convicts with them who were also British. S

Australia Topic Koostas: Aineõpetaja: Tallinn 2011 Location Only one country in the world fills a whole continent. That country is Australia. The continent it fills is Australia, too. Australia, then, is both a country and a continent. If someone wants to make clear that he is speaking of the country, he may call it by its full name of Commonwealth of Australia. Sixty million years ago Australia and its nearby islands were separated from the rest of the world by a great upheaval. They were cut off from Asia by the ocean. Very few people and almost no animals visited Australia before English colonists began to settle there in 1788. During all those 60 million years the native Australian mammals developed by themselves, undisturbed by the animals developing elsewhere. Australia is the only continent except Antarctica that is all south of the equator. It's name means "southland". Si

Geography The name Australia means ,,southland". It is both a country and a continent, with an area of 7,617,930 square kilometres and it is also an island, separated from Asia by the Arafura and Timor seas. But Australia is also surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef. It lies off the north-eastern coast and extends for over 2000 kilometres. The famous mountain range in the eastern part of Australia is the Great Diving Range and it's highest peak is Mount Kasciusco's 2230m. In the continental part, there are the Macdonnell ranges. Other smaller mountain ranges are the Musgrave Mountains, the Hammessley Mountains and the Darling Mountains. The continental part of Australia is mostly covered with deserts and these deserts are the Great Sandy Desert in the north-western part, the Great Victoria dessert in the southern part and Gibson desert and the Simpson desert. Australia Australia is a country and also a continent. If someone wants to make clear, that he is speaking of the country, he may call it by its full name of Commonwealth of Australia. Australia's name means "southland."It is south of the equator. Sometimes it is also called the island continent because it is an island. There are about twenty million people in Australia. It is 1,800 miles from the mainland of Asia and almost half way round the world from Europe. More than 600 miles of ocean separate it from Americas. Since Australia is south of the equator, its seasons are just the opposite of ours. It has summer while we have winter, and the other way round. States and Territories. Australia consists of six states, two territories and eight external territories. The six states are: Western Australia (capital Perth), South Australia (capital Adelaide), Queenslnd (capital Brisbane), New South Wales (capital Sydney), Victoria (capital Melbourne
