The Pilgrim Fathers

On November 9th, 1620, the `Mayflower' sighted what is now Cape Cod. Despite seeing land, the crew of the `Mayflower' searched for another month to find somewhere to land. Where they eventually landed was called New Plymouth. On December 25th, after finding a place where the `Mayflower' could be safely anchored, the Pilgrim Fathers began to build the first house for common use. By February 1621, 50% of the Pilgrim Fathers had died as a result of the cold weather and the inadequate housing that they had built for themselves. A Native American called Squanto helped those Pilgrim Fathers who survived the harsh winter. He showed them how to sow maize and how to cultivate the crop. Seeds brought from England were of little use in their new environment. By the summer of 1621, the Pilgrim Fathers had built houses for themselves and had gathered up a small harvest. They were well recovered in health and strength, and had all things in good plen...

Retelling the Aboriginal people

Traditions, arts and beliefs. The Aborigines blamed supernatural forces for all the events and used magic and ritual to get rid of evil spirits. Each of the clans had a special sacred place on their land where their spirits returned after death. The daily life and religious beliefs of Aborigines are best described in their paintings. Natural medicines from plants and roots were used to cure illnesses and the healing of the spirit was more important than the healing of the body. 6. European settlers Contact with British settlers began in 1788. The British, thinking that their culture was superior (parim), tried to impose (peale suruda) it on the native Aborigines. The settlers exploited (kurjalt kasutama) the traditional hunting lands of the Aborigines by intensive, large-scale agriculture, sheep herding and cutting down the forests. As a result of contact with European settlers many of the Aborigines died from diseases and illnesses. 7. Aborigines today

Canada - history and provinces.

The first explorer was Christopher Kolumbus who reached America's shore in 1492, although he thought it was Asia. The next explorer was John Cabot in 1497. He sailed to Newfoundland. The first European who explored further inland was Jacques Cartier in 1534. The King of France wanted to settle nowadays eastern Canada and call it New France. To avoid the high costs building the settlements, King of France made an agreement with a fur trading company if the company brought settlers to New France, they'd have monopoly to trade for furs and they would receive all the profits. First attempts of colonization failed. In 1604, French nobleman and a mapmaker named Samuel de Champlain established first permanent French settlement in the New World on an island. This area was called Acadia. When they moved to more sheltered harbour, the settlement was called Port Royal. By 1607, France wanted to establish a new French settlement along the St. Lawrence River

In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered America while trying to reach India. He named the native people Indians, because he though he had reached India. He didn't stay either and in the sixteenth century the first Europeans to settle in America were the Spanish, the English and the French. The first village founded by the English settlers was in Virginia in 1607. It was called Jamestown. They didn't have good relations with the Indians and many of them died. But Pocahontas, the daughter of an Indian chief, became their friend and helped them. They started growing tobacco in Virginia, using African slaves in the fields. In 1620 a new group of British settlers reached Plymouth, Massachusetts, with a ship called Mayflower and they were called 'Pilgrim Fathers' due to their strong belief in religion. They

adventures in Canada must have come to an end long before that time. The Colony of New France By 1600 French interest in Canada was renewed because of the beaver pelt trade and the fishing industry. First French colony was established in eastern Canada. Because of the French settlement the French established a claim to the Gulf of St. Lawrence area. An agreement was made between the King of France and a private fur-trading company that if the company brought settlers to New France then they would have a monopoly on the fur trade. Early attempts of colonization failed but the first permanent colony was established by a French nombleman and a mapmaker named Samuel de Champlain. Their first small community located in present-day New Brunswick which was called Acadia. There were really harsh climate conditions so they moved to a more sheltered harbour what is now Nova Scotia. Austraalia

From Botany Bay James Cook sailed along the east coast as far as the Cape York, where he put up the British flag. The eastern part of Australia became a British colony. The Colonization of Australia The British initially used it as a gigantic prison camp for convicts from Britain. Altogether 160 000 men, women and children were deported from Britain to Australia, where they led a very hard life. At the beginning of the19th century free settlers began to arrive from Britain in large numbers since it offered many stimulating opportunities. The Aborigines were cruelly suppressed, and it is only recently that white Australians have begun to acknowlege Aborigines' rights to their sacred lands. The settlers soon discovered that many of the animals as well as the plants of Australia were unlike those that were found anywhere else. Among te animals were kangaroos and wombats and koalas. RE English is spoken on all five continents

Comparison of American and British English American English has a great influence on the English language all over the world and has enriched it. About 70 precent of all native speakers of English live in America. The British people who settled in America ub the 17th century brought their language with them. The vocabulary of American English probably started developing on the first day after the arrival of the first English-speaking settlers, and it has continued to change for 400 years. As the New World had many plants, animals, and other things that were not found in Britian, the settlers added new words to their vocabulary every day. Their language was also influenced by the languages of the Native Ameircans and the settlers from other countries like Spain,France, and Germany. Examples of Native American words include tomato, potato, maize, tobacco, moccasin, and barbeque.

Austraalia ajalugu

The reason for founding a colony in Australia wasn't the riddance of unwanted people. The British may have hoped to found a naval base in the Pacific, sources of timer and flax. They arrived on 26.01.1788. Things were hard for them and food was short. Things gradually improved and a second and third fleet arrived in years 1790 and 1791. Convicts worked on government land but since 1973 those who behaved well were freed and given land. The first free settlers arrived also that year. Relatively few new people were sent to Australia during the long wars with France from 1793 to 1815. The second governor was John Hunter in 17951800 and he was followed by Philip King. Under King the first colonists settled in Tasmania in 1803, Tasmania was then called Van Diemens Land. In 1813 a path was discovered through the Blue Mountains, that enabled them to spread inland. By 1825

The capital of Canada is Ottawa. Other large cities are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Quebec. Canada has two official languages English and French. It's interesting to know that about 61% of Canadians name English and 24% french their mother tongue. There are also many other languages spoken in Canada such as: Italian, Chinese, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Greek and Dutch. There are also many native languages such as Algonquian. The British and the French as the main settlers from Europe fought for hundreds of years before they managed to build up a country which was based on recognizing the cultural diversity of different nations in Canada. All the communities living in the country are encouraged to remember their origins and hold their own ethnic events and national festivals. Cultural diversity makes Canada even more interesting. In spite of this, in recent years there

There were many different tribes and their food, clothing, homes and art varied according to the climate and landscape around them. In West the tribes were hunters and in Southwest the tribes grew corn. American Indians today prefer to be called Native Americans, they helped the early settlers to adapt a life in a new country. When the settlers wanted to take over tribal land the Native American were forced to move to seperate areas called reservations. Traditional Indian culture (including dances, religion and language) was forbidden. Today there are about 2 million Native Americans who live on the 278 reservations across the country. Modern Native Americans take pride in their traditions which includes the art crafts, costumes, songs and dances of their ancestors.

Referaat Spanish California

The earliest Californians were adventurous Asians who made their way across the Bering Straits to Alaska thousands of years ago when a warmer climate and a now-vanished land bridge made such travel easier. These men and women and their descendants settled North and South America, spreading out to form the various nations and tribes whom the first European visitors to this hemisphere dubbed "Indians." The mountain ranges of the Pacific Coast isolated these early settlers from the cultures that developed in neighboring Mexico and the western United States. Still, more than two hundred years passed before Spain made any concerted effort to colonize the coastal regions Cabrillo claimed for the crown. Coastal winds and currents made the voyage north difficult, and Spanish captains failed to find safe harbors for their crafts. Baja California became the northwest limit of Spanish colonization, and even there, efforts to settle the area and bring native

San Francisco San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the leading financial and cultural of stateof California and it's located in the far-west of USA. The earliest archaeological evidence of human habitation of the territory of the city of San Francisco dates to 3000 BC. The Yelamu group of the Ohlone people resided in several small villages when a Spanish exploration party, led by Don Gaspar de Portolà arrived on November 2, 1769, the first documented European visit to San Francisco Bay. Upon independence from Spain in 1821, the area became part of Mexico. Under Mexican rule, the mission system gradually ended and its lands began to be privatized. In 1835, Englishman William Richardson erected the first independent homestead, near a boat anchorage around what is today Portsmouth Square. In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered it while trying to reach India. He didn't stay and in the sixteenth century the first Europeans to settle in America were the Spanish, the English and the French. The first village founded by the English settlers was in Virginia in 1607. It was called Jamestown. In 1620 a new group of British settlers reached Plymouth, Massachusetts, called 'Pilgrims' due to their strong belief in religion. They became farmers and businessmen who coped with the Indians and in 1621 had a big dinner to thank the Indians as they had helped them to survive the hard winter. The current Prime Minister is Kevin Rudd. History, discovery: Though nobody had seen it, people thought long before the seventeenth century, that there was a land in the southern ocean. It was called the Unknown South Land. But more than 60 000 years before the arrival of the European settlers, Aboriginal people inhabited most areas of the nowadays Australian European settlement. There were estimated 300,000 Indigenous Australians living on the continent. The Dutch navigator Janszoon was the first to find the South Land. He sighted the coast in 1606. Then Abel Tasman visited an island off the southern coast of Australia in 1642 and the island was named Tasmania after him. Winnipeg is the primary municipality in the Winnipeg Capital Region, which is home to more than sixty percent of Manitoba's population. The name Winnipeg comes from the Cree words meaning muddy water, referring to Lake Winnipeg 60 kilometres to the north. The Winnipeg area was a trading centre for Aboriginal peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans. The first fort was built near the Forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in 1738 by French traders. A settlement was later founded by the Selkirk settlers in 1812, the nucleus of which was incorporated as the City of Winnipeg in 1873. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Winnipeg was one of the fastest growing cities in North America and established itself as a transportation and manufacturing centre. The Winnipeg Metropolitan area is Canada's 8th largest Census Metropolitan Area, with 694,668 inhabitants, and the City of Winnipeg is Canada's 7th largest municipality.
