If your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them. Knowledge of foreign languages may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion or a transfer overseas, or of going on foreign business trips. Many English-speaking business people don't bother to learn other languages because they believe that most of the people they do business with in foreign countries can speak English, and if they don't speak English, interpreters can be used. P. to praise Britain's lack of involvement in European affairs. It basically means that Great Britain was isolated from the rest of Europe: they weren't even connected by land and they stayed away from the affairs of European countries. They didn't want to ruin the situation that they had: during the late 19th century, Britain's primary goal in foreign policy was to maintain the balance of power in Europe and to intervene should that balance be upset. Its secondary goal was to protect its overseas interest in the colonies and dominions, as free trade was what kept the Empire alive. The sea routes to the colonies, especially those linking Britain to India (via the Suez Canal), were vital. However, by the early 1900s the German threat increased dramatically. Some in Britain thought it was in need of allies. For most of the 19th century, Britain had regarded France and Russia as its two most dangerous rivals, but with the growing threat of Germany, British policy began to change

In 1785 Noah Webster became famous by producing The American Spelling Book, which marked the real birth of American English. He was a graduate of Yale University who started his career as a teacher in a school. When teaching, reading and spelling, he lacked good materials. The only textbooks used at that time were textbooks from overseas that made no reference to the people, events, or language of America. Webster felt that an original American textbook would help inspire the sense of identity and patriotism of the younger generation. It was his belief that pupils should enjoy learning; therefore the grammar in his popular ''speller book'' was kept simple, and it contained inspiring text by American authors. Webster began to think systematically how words should be spelled. He achieved his goal

Many couples, particularly in the cities, live together before or instead of marriage. Typically, the bonds between siblings in an Irish family are especially strong. In rural areas, extended families often live near one another, and family members who have moved to Dublin or overseas in search of work often return for Christmas and other family celebrations or funerals. Song Celebrations and Song Festival traditions are among the best known trademarks of Estonia. No wonder, as the scale of our Song festivals is unique in the world. Once every five years, the Estonian song festival grounds (Lauluväljak in Tallinn) are filled with folk costumes and smiling people. Imagine tens of thousands of singers forming one huge choir and hundreds of thousands of people sitting on the grass to hear traditional choir music no wonder it shocks, surprises and mesmerises overseas visitors! What makes it even more special is that, due to the small population of Estonia, there are less than million Estonian speakers and yet, a tenth of them attend the event. Long established song festival traditions are most likely the reason why Estonians not known for our pop- music or global musical prowess are still referred to as the "singing nation". Singing and songs have played a very important role in Estonian history. Songs were sung

economy and culture. From approximately the 1st to 5th centuries AD, resident farming was widely established, the population grew, and settlement expanded. Cultural influences from the Roman Empire reached Estonia, and this era is therefore also known as the Roman Iron Age. A more troubled and war-ridden middle Iron Age followed with external dangers coming both from the Baltic tribes, who attacked across the southern land border, and from overseas. Several Scandinavian sagas refer to campaigns against Estonia. Estonian pirates conducted similar raids in the Viking age and sacked and burned the Scandinavian capital of Sigtuna in 1187. By the early 13th century, Estonia was divided into eight large counties -- Saaremaa, Läänemaa, Rävala, Harju, Viru, Järva, Sakala, and Ugandi. Annual consultations were held by representatives of several counties and developments took the direction of establishing a state. Estonia until this

Victorian Age The Victorian era of the United Kingdom was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from June 1837 until her death on the 22nd of January 1901. The reign was a long period of prosperity for the British people, as profits gained from the overseas British Empire, as well as from industrial improvements at home, allowed an educated middle class to develop. Her middle class wiews were called ,,Victorian values". They were discipline in the family, the sobriety and puritanism of the public life. Some scholars extend the beginning of the period--as defined by a variety of sensibilities and political games that have come to be associated with the Victorians--back five years to the passage of the Reform Act 1832.
