Traditions
Australia doesn't have many traditions. Attempts to get
Halloween off the ground have stalled due to one too
many homeowners telling little kids to get off their
property or they will see a scary sight. Australia celebrates
many of the same holidays as do people of the Western
world, such as Easter and Christmas. However,
Australians also celebrate some holidays unique to their
country and culture.
Australia Day
Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet
of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at
Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788. On Australia
Day, over half of the nation's population of 21 million attend either an organised
community event, or get together with family and friends with the intention of
celebrating our national day. It is celebrated with parties, picnics, and fireworks
and coincides with the last days of summer vacations.
Anzac Day
Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and
New Zealand, and is commemorated by both countries on 25 April
every year to honour the members of the Australian and New
Zealand Army Corps who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during
World War One. It now more broadly commemorates all those who
died and served in military operations for their countries.
Queen`s birthday
The Queen's Birthday holiday is a moveable feast in Australia and New
Zealand. It celebrates the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II who is not only Queen
of the United Kingdom but also Queen of Australia and New Zealand, where the
Queen's Birthday is a public holiday celebrated on a Monday but on different
dates. In Australia, except in the state of Western Australia, it is celebrated on the
second Monday of June. The holiday also marks the start of the Australian ski
season. In Western Australia, the Queen's Birthday holiday is celebrated in late
September or early October.
Aborigines
The Aborigines probably came to Australia as modern human beings 40,000
to 60,000 years ago. Some people beleive that the Aborigines have existed on
Australia for 120,000 to 150,000 years, but have not been able to find conclusive
evidence to support their theories. It is not known from where the Aboriginals
began their journey, but it is certain that people with some kind of water craft
crossed the 100 - 160 kilometres stretches of water between the islands to the
north; and reach the southern continent. This sea voyage is the earliest evidence
of sea travel by prehistoric man.
Religion
The Aborigonal religion is based heavily on the Dreaming. The Dreaming is
the Aboriginal creation story. Aborigines believe that at the beginning of time the
world was a shapless mass of nothing, waitng to be transformed into what we
see today. Every major geographical feature in australia has an aboriginal story to
explain it. The Dreaming gets very abstract, it turns almost into another
dimension. Aborigines beleive that they are constantly living in the Dreaming
and that every time they do something they leave an impression on the other
reality that is the Dreaming .
Present Day
Today the Aborigines are in trouble. Many have left the their traditional lifestyle, and
have moved to suburbs. There is a 40% unemployment rate in many Aborigines
populations, in part because Aborigines are widely discriminated against which causes
some people not to hire them. Even the police and government discriminate against
aborigines. In many places bars are segregated into different parts for Aborigines or
Aborigines aren't served at all. Some progress was made recently when an Aboriginal
woman was voted into Australia parliament. Australia still has a long way to go before
Aborigines have equal rights. The Australian government should give land back to an
Aboriginal person who wants to live the way his or her people were before the British
arrived.
Use of land
Australia's area is 769 million hectares, with about one quarter mostly
desert and not used commercially. The most extensive land use in
Australia is livestock grazing in arid and semi-arid regions and covers 430
million hectares or 56 percent of Australia. In total, the area of
agricultural land is 473 million hectares or nearly 62 percent of the
continent. Although agriculture is still an important player in the
Australian economy, mining, manufacturing, service and construction
now contribute more to the economy than agriculture. Forestry tends to be
confined to regions of Australia with higher rainfall and covers nearly 2
percent of the continent.
Use of land
Australia has many forests of importance due to significant features, despite being one
of the driest continents. Australia has approximately 147 million hectares of native forest
which represents some 19% of land use.
Mining in Australia is a significant primary industry and contribut to the Australian
economy. Historically, mining booms have also encouraged immigration to Australia.
Many different ores and minerals are mined throughout the country. Much of the raw
material mined in Australia is exported overseas to countries such as China for processing
into refined product.

Introduction, Location Australia is a country between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is the only country in the world that occupies an entire continent. The mainland covers an area of 7.7 million km² and it is about 3700 km from the most northern point to its most southern point and about 4000 km from east to west. There are also many different seas around Australia, like the Coral and the Tasman Seas in the west or the Timor and the Arafura Seas in the north, where the Indian and the Pacific Oceans meet. Because all seas and oceans near Australia are warm, surfing is a very popular hobby. Political subdivision Australia is divided into six states, which are: · New South Wales · Victoria · Queensland · South Australia · Western Australia · Tasmania New South Wales is the most populous state in Australia. Its capital is Sydney.

The official name of it is the Commonwealth of Australia. It's divided into six states and two territories: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Northern Territory. Symbols: Australia had the British flag as their official flag until 1901, when the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Over 30 000 entries attracted the official competition. Five of them, which contained almost identical designs, were placed equally first. The Australian flag symbolises Australia's historical links with Britain, because it has

Aborigines have interested me for a long time now so doing this essay is really fun for me. Australian Aboriginal culture is one of the world's longest surviving cultures. Australian Aborigines, also known as Indigenous Australians , are the native people of Australia . Many of them suffered when white people from Britain arrived in Australia, because of disease, the loss of their hunting lands, and unfair laws. Australian Aborigines are those people regarded as indigenous to the Australian continent.

Australia

Australia Australia is the smallest continent in the world. It is 7.6 million square kilometres big. It is often called the island continent because it is rather small for a continent and very big for an island. There are only five countries bigger than Australia in the World. There are five states in the mainland. Tasmania is also considered as a state so there are six states. The Northern Territory and Canberra are also independent but they are not states. Australia

Australia Australia is the only country in the world that covers an entire continent, yet also the smallest and the driest of all the continents. It's almost the same size as continental USA, being the sixth largest country in the world. It's also the oldest some of the rocks are more than 3,000 million years old. Australia is often called `Down Under', because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere. As a result, its seasons are the opposite of ours. Australia, Tasmania and a number of smaller islands form the Commonwealth of Australia. Because of the country's great size, the climate in Australia ranges from tropical regions of the Northern Territory to the cool temperate conditions in the southeast and Tasmania, where it often snows in winter. In the north, half the year is `wet' and half is `dry'. From November to April heavy rain fills the rivers and makes enormous lakes where thousands of birds come for the summer. From
