Millised ajakirjandustudengid saavad tulevikus edukaks?
Kas see on kirjutamisoskus? Mõnedel mu tudengitel on kirjutamise peale annet.
Ambitsioonikus on abiks.
Siin on välja toodud edukate ajakirjandustudengite, keda olen aastate jooksul näinud, mõned ühised jooned.
Nad leiavad oma kire. Mul on olnud mitmeid tudengeid, kellel pärast esimest byline’i nägemist tundengi ajakirjas, läheb peas tuluke põlema. Äkitselt avastavad nad, et ajakirjandus on just see, millega nad kogu oma ülejäänud elu tahavad tegeleda. Nad on leidnud enda asja.
Nad on kohal. Need on tudengid, kes võtavad kõiki ajakirjanduse ained, mida ülikool pakub. Ma näen neid oma ainetes semester semestri järel, arvatavasti sellesama tulukese pärast, mida ma mainisin eelmises paragrahvis.
Nad kirjutavad tudengi ajalehte. Nad kirjutavad lugusid. Nad toimetavad. Nad kirjutavad pealkirju ning kujundavad. Nad on toimetuses öösiti ja nädalavahetustel, samal ajal, kui nad võiksid mujal elu nautida. See viib mind järgmise punkti juurde.
Which Kinds of Journalism Students are the Ones Who Succeed?
It's the end of another semester at the college where I teach , and as I contemplate doing final grades for my journalism classes I find myself thinking about what makes one student successful and another less so. What's the secret formula for doing well in journalism school, and then translating that into a career in the news business?
Is it writing ability? Some of my students are naturally gifted writers , the types who always did well in  English classes and took a journalism course because they loved to write or were encouraged to do so by one of their teachers.
Writing ability helps. A student who can quickly quickly master thenewswriting format  is ahead of the game , so to speak, compared to her less-talented classmates. And while I firmly believe that most students can learn to bang out news stories , I've had a few students who were such awful writers that I felt journalism, at least print journalism, just wasn't for them .
But while I've had plenty of gifted writers do well in my classes and go on to news careers, writing chops alone aren 't enough. Some students who take journalism classes think writing is everything, and are disappointed when they find out that the gruntwork of reporting is more important . Put simply, these students just aren't very interested in the hard work that goes with rock- solid reporting, and they usually disappear after a semester.
Ambition helps. Newsrooms are known for being full of type-A personalities, people who are driven to get ahead and rise to the top. Again , I've had my share of ambitious students over the years , but a fair number of them decided there wasn't enough money in news to make it worth their while.
More often than not they switched their majors to business, or headed for law school.
So who does do well, at least in my journalism program ? What kinds of students end up finding careers in news? Here are a few traits common to the successful journalism students I've seen over the years.
They find their passion . I've had any number of students who, upon seeing their first byline in the student newspaper, have that moment when a light bulb switches on above their heads. Suddenly they realize this is what they want to do for the rest of their lives . They've found their passion in life.
They stick around . These are the students who take every journalism course our college offers. I see them in my classes semester after semester, probably because of the light bulb thing I mentioned in the previous paragraph.
They get involved with the student newspaper. The students who work on the student newspaper are, 99.999 times out of 100, the ones who succeed in both j-school and in finding jobs . They write stories. They edit. They write headlines and do layout . They're in the newsroom on nights and weekends when they could be out having fun. Which leads to my next point.
They work hard - really hard. The students who do best are generally pretty good writers and reporters, though they're not all naturals. But regardless of their abilities, these students work harder than just about everyone else around them. They do well in their classes AND spend countless hours toiling away on the student newspaper, often while working another job off-campus.
Why is this so important? Because journalism is a trade, profession, whatever you want to call it, that rewards hard work. And for these kinds of students, that kind of work ethic usually comes naturally; it's part of the very the fabric of their being.
No wonder they end up succeeding.

Education

Education Education is so multifaceted that it is difficult for me to know where to begin discussing it, or how to prioritize the many factors. Relaying my own experience is easy: I had a standard classroom approach, supplemented by inordinate reading. In only the briefest and least memorable instances did I receive any individual tutoring. Education is commonly thought of as the job of schools. Adults cry "educate our children!" Everyone has opinions about the best way to do the job. It is of urgent importance, and all the numerous factors are much studied, debated, and new (or old) ideas continually tested or retested. Some people say "it's as simple as . . . " and then name their pet peeve or passion. My view is not of an education specialist, but of one who loves sharing what I learn, and owes much to educators. Since I don't have an educational theory neatly worked-out, nor an outline of my perceptions, my intent is to address each educational ingredient that comes to my m

Changing career: 'These days, I go home feeling relaxed' Starting a new career is a daunting prospect for many. But Kate Hilpern discovers that plenty of help is at hand Some of the jobs that career changers are most keen to break into PR and teaching, among them are the very same jobs that people are queuing to get out of, says John Lees, author of How to Get a Job You'll Love and Take Control of Your Career. Many of us get to the point, whether in our twenties, thirties, forties or fifties where we decide to change careers. Some of us will make radical changes, while others will move to the edge of their comfort zone, perhaps shifting from acupuncturist to homeopath or PR office to journalist. But the key to making the right decision, says Lees, is to bring your dream back down to life with a hard thump. "I always say to people, 'Find out what you will actually be doing in the job of your dreams. What does the nitty-gritty day-to- day work involve?'" Conversely, he says, pe

They spend more time at the computers or laptops or iPads etc. than read books or move outside. And another thing is that teachers are less capable in using technological appliances. But the latter mentioned fact is an advantage for us teachers as well. It gives us an opportunity to provide our students to experience success. They can help and assist us if we need some technological help. Another thing is that in schools, in classes generally students are not allowed to use their appliances, so it means they have to communicate verbally as well. I think that teachers should be creative to blend so-called digital le
