You put a current-limiting resistor in series with the LED and connect it between the positive supply and ground. In many cases, that is adequate. But this can cause problems in other situations. Figure 6.10 illustrates such a case. Here, the LED operates from an unregulated supply. You might do this in a battery-operated system where you want the LEDs to remain off so they don’t drain the battery when the AC power is removed. In this example, the DC supply has AC ripple from the full-wave rectifier in the supply. The LED current will follow this ripple, and the result will show up on the phototransistor output and in the ADC results. One way to prevent this problem is to drive the LED with a constant current. Figure 6.11 shows a simple circuit that will provide a constant current to the LED. The opamp will keep the voltage across the sense resistor equal to the input voltage.
