Character Sketch – Christophine Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys Christophine was the servant of Annette and the nurse of her daughter Antoinette. She was a wedding present from Alexander Cosway, the first husband of Annette. She practices magic which is called obeah, and also has wide knowledge of the Caribbean black culture. She has had all her three children with different men, but has still remained single. She opened her reason why she didn’t want to get married in a quote: All woman, all colors, nothing but fools. Three children I have. One living in this world, each one a different father, but no husband, I thank my God. I keep my money. I don’t give it to no worthless man. I think it also gives out her idea of marriage. She thinks that woman who get married are fools because married people share their money and other possessions with husbands, who in her opinion aren’t worth it at all. Throughout this novel, Christophine a
unsure about her actions and she wasn’t ready for her role as the mother. She was constantly tired of little Tom wanting her attention. She may be more responsible than her brother Jack, on the other hand she is less analytical. Julie is often unable to see the consequences of her decisions and actions. For example, actions involving Derek into their lives, which also led to the exposure of their secret. Losing parents definitely had a large role in forming Julies character. As if losing both-father and later mother wasn’t hard enough, they couldn’t tell anyone and she had to take all the responsibility so they could avoid ending up in foster care. I can only imagine how Liisa-Maria Pihlak, 12B hard it must’ve been for a teenage girl, to start acting like an adult to due such circumstances. Julie’s father used to make fun of her ambitions of becoming a famous athlete, however she was actually pretty talented. She held
low, thrilling voice. It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down, as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again. Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth, but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget: a singing compulsion. Jay Gatsby is the one who fell for Daisy’s seductive and unforgettable character. To him, Daisy is the embodiment of perfection. Daisy and Jay were in a relationship long, long time ago when they were young and way before Jay left to go to fight in the war. Daisy promised to wait for him, but instead she married Tom who promised her a wealthy and otherwise great life. To Gatsby, Daisy is charming, sophisticated and all other great things but in reality she is a shallow person who is in love with money and materialistic things
