To measure how liking toward Joe affected the subjects' decisions to buy his raffle tick- ets, Regan had them fill out several rating scales indicating how much they had liked Joe. T h e scales fall from their eyes and the illusion of their lives is replaced with clarity and truth. Maybe it doesn't last long, but for a moment heroes see themselves clearly. EPIPHANY Others may see the hero more clearly, too. Others may see in their changed behavior signs that they have been reborn and share in the immortality of gods.
