Report 2, English

To: John Howell From: Anna Abi Subject: Suggestions Date: 2nd March 2009 Purpose The purpose of this report is to suggest ways of making the shop more profitable. Rewards cards Firstly, I think it would be a good idea to start giving out rewards cards to loyal customers to show them that we value them as clients and it would also show to our future clients that we are a company that supports their customers. Lower prices Secondly, I would suggest slightly lowering our prices and letting the public know of it. We should grow a reputation as a company that is not trying to rob their clients of their money. This would be a great advertisement for the shop and would boost our clientele, making up for the little lost from the lower prices

drives from its “culture”, designing public sector to become and act more like private sector organisations. From this influence is inspired the pay-for performance tool that in private sector is usually used with car salesmen or with other sale fields. In very simplistic way pay-for performance means that one is getting paid relating how well he works. In a more complicated way it refers to instrument that encourages civil servants to rise their work quality and performance, it rewards best officials based on their contribution and effort. So it is kind of a tool to motivate officials to perform better and produce more qualitative work. (Randma-Liiv 2005) Compensating and motivating employees plays important role in governmental jobs- it helps to attract, motivate and retain qualified workers in the field. Success of pay-for performance tool has been discussed in many ways. Some researchers

They work hard - really hard. The students who do best are generally pretty good writers and reporters, though they're not all naturals. But regardless of their abilities, these students work harder than just about everyone else around them. They do well in their classes AND spend countless hours toiling away on the student newspaper, often while working another job off- campus. Why is this so important? Because journalism is a trade, profession, whatever you want to call it, that rewards hard work. And for these kinds of students, that kind of work ethic usually comes naturally; it's part of the very the fabric of their being. No wonder they end up succeeding.

Citing the role of his father and uncle in forming his legendary work ethic, Capello said: "They taught me dedication, to always work hard with absolute stubbornness. Only hard work allows an athlete to make the most of his talents." The result is a Stakhanovite philosophy under which Capello rewards the players he judges to have given their all under his instructions to win at all costs - and ruthlessly freezes out those he believes do not fit his gameplan. As his fellow Italian manager Arrigo Sacchi put it: "For Capello, football is all about wining. He does not see beauty in the game." The list of stars who have fallen foul of Capello's steely will is suitably impressive - Alessandro Del Piero, David Beckham, Paolo Di Canio, Edgar Davids

Reasons why human beings are unique

Comparative studies between humans and chimps show that while both will cooperate, humans will always help more. Children seem to be innate helpers. They act selflessly before social norms set in. Studies have shown that they will spontaneously open doors for adults and pick up "accidentally" dropped items. They will even stop playing to help. Their sense of fairness begins young. Even if an experiment is unfairly rigged so that one child receives more rewards, they will ensure a reward is fairly split. Children show 'proactive' kindness, unlike our close relatives (Credit: Thinkstock) Children show 'proactive' kindness, unlike our close relatives (Credit: Thinkstock) We know that chimpanzees also work together and share food in apparently unselfish ways. However, Michael Tomasello of the Max Planck institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, says they will only cooperate if there is something in it for them.

At the award ceremony in Stockholm on 10 December 1907, the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, C. D. af Wirsén, praised both Kipling and three centuries of English literature. "Book-ending" this achievement was the publication of two connected poetry and story collections: Puck of Pook's Hill and Rewards and Fairies in 1906 and 1910 respectively. The latter contained the poem "If--". In a 1995 BBC opinion poll, it was voted the UK's favourite poem. This exhortation to self- control and stoicism is arguably Kipling's most famous poem. Also, once you start losing weight you should give yourself little rewards, like a visit to the hairdresser or a new dress. That way you'll probably find that you won't think about food so much. If you follow my advice, I'm sure you'll be back in shape in no time. Anyway, let me know how it goes. Lots o f love, V Kate TASK 23 Study the following situations and, using appropriate expressions, offer advice to each person. 1) Your friend wants some advice on what she should take with her on her first trip abroad.

It does not explain why personal identity is sometimes stronger than group identity. In addition, using the theory in isolation is reductionist it fails to address the environment that interacts with the self. Cultural expectations, rewards as motivators and social constraints such as poverty may play a greater role in behavior that one's sense of in-group identity. Explain the formation of stereotypes and their effect on behavior. Moscovici has defined social representations as the shared beliefs and explanations held by the society in which we live or the group in which we belong. Social representations provide a code for social exchange and a code for naming and

For what advancement may I hope from thee That no revenue hast but thy good spirits, To feed and clothe thee? Why should the poor be flatter'd? No, let the candied tongue lick absurd pomp, And crook the pregnant hinges of the knee Where thrift may follow fawning. Dost thou hear? Since my dear soul was mistress of her choice And could of men distinguish, her election Hath seal'd thee for herself; for thou hast been As one, in suffering all, that suffers nothing, A man that fortune's buffets and rewards Hast ta'en with equal thanks: and blest are those Whose blood and judgment are so well commingled, That they are not a pipe for fortune's finger To sound what stop she please. Give me that man That is not passion's slave, and I will wear him 94 In my heart's core, ay, in my heart of heart, As I do thee.—Something too much of this.— There is a play to-night before the king; One scene of it comes near the circumstance

very well for Chillingworth. He married Hester without love and didn't confess, which didn't work out well for him. However lying about his identity gave him the opportunity to commit his next sin which he also didn't confess. Unlike Dimmesdale, Chillingworth gained more than he lost by lying. As you can see by these examples if you commit a crime and no one knows about it, it's up to you to move on with your life or fall into a pit of guilt. If you can escape the guilt, there are great rewards. You can accomplish things you wouldn't normally be able to. You can settle the score with anyone who has wronged you. Or you can run away and start your life over. If you can't escape the guilt, your life will be come a living hell. You will be tormented by what you have done and won't be able to live your life. You could run away but your guilty conscience would catch up quickly. So in

EPIPHANY Others may see the hero more clearly, too. Others may see in their changed behavior signs that they have been reborn and share in the immortality of gods. T h i s is some times called a moment of epiphany: an abrupt realization of divinity. T h e Feast o f the Epiphany, observed in the Catholic Church on January 6 , celebrates the moment when the M a g i , three W i s e O l d M e n , first realized the divinity of the newborn Christ. One of the Rewards of surviving death is that others can see that heroes have changed. Young people coming back from a war or from an ordeal like basic training seem different — more mature, self-confident, and serious, and worthy of a little more respect. There is a chain of divine experience: from enthusiasm, being visited by a god, to apotheosis, becoming a god, to epiphany, being recognized as a god. Heroes themselves may experience epiphany. A hero may realize suddenly,

The Chinese wanted as many Americans as possible to enter these contests so that, in the process, they might write comments favorable to the Communist view. If, however, the idea was to attract large numbers of entrants, why were the prizes so small? A few extra cigarettes or a little fresh fruit were often all that a contest winner could expect. In the setting, even these prizes were valuable, but, still, there were much larger rewards-warm clothing, special mail privileges, increased freedom of movement in camp-that the Chinese could have used to increase the number of essay writers. Yet they specifically chose to employ the smaller rather than the larger, more motivating rewards. Although the settings are quite different, the surveyed fraternities refused to allow civic activities into their initiation ceremonies for the same reason that the

Roles are not restrictively defined, but assigned on a "best person" basis. 2. Mutual Benefit and Reward: All team members and participants benefit from IPD. In IPD the members are involved as early as possible, and IPD compensation structures recognize and reward early involvement. The compensation structure motivates the search for better solutions and value added by the temporary organization, and it rewards "whats best for the project". Incentives are tied to the achievement of project goals or even more. 3. Collaborative Innovation and Decision Making: Team members are motivated to be innovative, and it can only happen when ideas are judged on their merit, not on the authors role or status. Each partys idea will be taken under consideration equally, no matter his or her status in the project. Key decisions are evaluated by the team and, to the greatest practical

One of the ways in which the ego attempts to escape the unsatisfactoriness of personal self-hood is to enlarge and strengthen its sense of self by identifying with a group – a nation, a political party, corporation, institution, sect, club, gang, football team. In some cases the personal ego seems to dissolve completely as someone dedicates his or her life to working selflessly for the greater good of the collective without demanding personal rewards, recognition, or aggrandizement. What a relief to be freed of the dreadful burden of personal self. The members of the collective feel happy and fulfilled, no matter how hard they work, how many sacrifices they make. They appear to have gone beyond ego. The question is: Have they truly become free, or has the ego simply shifted from the personal to the collective? A collective ego manifests the same characteristics as the personal

Jack Stack taught all of his employees how to read the nancial statements, opened the books, and put numerical goals alongside individual performance numbers on grease boards around the plant. Daily goals and public accountability were combined with daily rewards and public recognition. The Hawthorne plant of the Western Electric Company in Cicero, Illinois, also gured this out, albeit accidentally. The year was 1955, and their nding was signi cant: increasing lighting in the plant made workers more productive. Then someone pointed out (I have to imagine a sweaty- palmed intern) a confusing detail. Productivity also improved when they dimmed the lighting! In fact, making any change at all seemed to result in increased productivity.

Newton. After his death, it descended through his grandson to reach, on May 14, 1716, Edward Willes, a 22-year-old minister at Oriel College, Oxford. Willes embarked at once upon a career unique in the annals of cryptology and the church. He not only managed to reconcile his religious calling with an activity once condemned by churchly authorities, but also went on to become the only man in history to use cryptanalytic talents to procure ecclesiastical rewards. Within two years, he had been named rector of Barton, Bedfordshire, for solving more than 300 pages of cipher that exposed Sweden's attempt to foment an uprising in England. He virtually guaranteed his future when he testified before the House of Lords in 1723. Here, Francis Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester, was being tried by his peers for attempting to set a pretender on the English throne. The pretender's cause exhorted the allegiance of many in England,
