prelim year 1

Other laws are prescriptive- they prescribe how people should or should not behave. For example, the law says that the minor can’t drink alcohol, but in spite of that rule, they still do. Relations between people are regulated by prescriptive laws. Some of them are customs – informal rules of social and moral behaviour. Customs are not made by governments and they are not written down. Sometimes we can break these rules without any penalty, but if we keep breaking the rules or break an important one, other society members may criticize us or act violently toward us. And some prescriptive laws are made by governments. When governments make laws they use a system of courts backed by the power of the police to enforce these laws. 2. Sources of law (general) Precedent – a decision about a particular legal case that makes it likely that other similar cases will be decided in the same way

Investors Handbook. A Legal Guide to Business in Georgia

In this direction, Georgian Govern- ment made several important steps: Tax -The administration of tax and customs systems has been simplified. The number and rates of taxes have been significantly reduced making it easier for local and foreign businesses to do business. Currently, there are only 6 taxes and no capital gains, inheritance, wealth, property transfer; social, branch remittance or any other taxes are in place in Georgia. The coming into effect of a new comprehensive Tax Code (including customs legislation) on January 1, 2011 con- stitutes a further milestone in the development of tax legislation. Licenses and permits - Georgia has dramatically reduced licensing and permitting requirements to ease constraints on business. The total number of licenses and permits was cut by 84% in re- forms that eliminated 756 licenses and permits and streamlined procedures. Currently, licenses

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique?

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique? 1 Introduction It was Jeremy Bentham who thought of a famous method to give ethics a rational basis. He was fed up with the penal laws where offenders met corporate punishment and together with Cesario Beccaria he stood up to torture, corporal punishment, and the death penalty. He resisted against irrational moral emotions as the instigation for ethical conduct, saying only reasonable grounds could justify the moral decisions of individuals and legislators. And now his theory of is the one that is known for justifying torture (Verplaetse, 2008). Since 9/11 and the following fight against terrorism it became clear that the Bush administration thought of torture as something justifiable while it goes against all possible agreed upon treaties and conventions

William Shakespeare - Hamlet

Whereof he is the head. Then if he says he loves you, It fits your wisdom so far to believe it As he in his particular act and place May give his saying deed; which is no further Than the main voice of Denmark goes withal. Then weigh what loss your honour may sustain, If with too credent ear you list his songs, Or lose your heart, or your chaste treasure open To his unmaster'd importunity. Fear it, Ophelia, fear it, my dear sister, And keep you in the rear of your affection, Out of the shot and danger of desire. The chariest maid is prodigal enough, If she unmask her beauty to the moon: Virtue itself 'scapes not calumnious strokes: The canker galls the infants of the spring, Too oft before their buttons be disclosed, And in the morn and liquid dew of youth Contagious blastments are most imminent. Be wary then; best safety lies in fear: Youth to itself rebels, though none else near. OPHELIA I shall the effect of this good lesson keep, As watchman to my heart

It is primarily a report to the public on the important role that cryptology has played, but it may also orient cryptology with regard to its past and alert historians to the sub rosa influence of cryptanalysis. The book seeks to cover the entire history of cryptology. My goal has been twofold: to narrate the development of the various methods of making and breaking codes and ciphers, and to tell how these methods have affected men. When I began this book, I, like other well-informed amateurs, knew about all that had been published on the history of cryptology in books on the subject. How little we really knew! greatly from industry to industry and firm to firm. Supply chain management is typically viewed to lie between fully vertically integrated firms, where the entire material flow is owned by a single firm and those where each channel member operates independently. Therefore coordination between the various players in the chain is key in its effective management. Cooper and Ellram [1993] compare supply chain management to a well-balanced and well-practiced relay team. Such a team is more competitive when each player knows how to be positioned for the hand-off. The relationships are the strongest between players who directly pass the baton (stick), but the entire team needs to make a coordinated effort to win the race. Below is an example of a very simple supply chain for a single product, where raw material is procured from vendors, transformed into finished goods in a single step, and then transported to distribution centers, and ultimately, customers

I wish you well in whatever course of action you decide upon. Do let me know what you decide to do; it is always good to hear from former pupils. Yours sincerely, Linda Steel Dear Stephanie, Thanks for your letter asking me for advice about how to lose weight I was sorry to hear that you're feeling depressed. I'm sure your problem isn't as serious as you say it is. You always did exaggerate! The best advice I can give you is to choose one diet and really stick to it for a couple of months; it's pointless trying lots of different ones which only last a few days, as you've discovered. If I were you, I would go on the same diet I went on: I've sent you the information booklet. The most important thing to remember is to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and to exercise regularly. Why don't you join the basketball team? I know how much you love basketball. Also, once you start losing weight you should give yourself little rewards, like a visit to the

Never in the history of surveying have their been so many alternatives for collecting survey data, nor has there been so much heterogeneity in the use of survey methods across countries. Heterogeneity also exists within countries as surveyors attempt to match survey modes to the difficulties associated with finding and obtaining response to particular survey populations. Yet, all surveys face a common challenge, which is how to produce precise estimates by surveying only a relatively small proportion of the larger population, within the limits of the social, economic and technological environments associated with countries and survey populations in countries. English boys play it at school, and in public parks. When they grow up, they play as members of important amateur teams or as a professional in teams competing in football ,,leagues". Professional football is as much a business as a sport. Rugby football was first played in 1823. In rugby every player is allowed to carry the ball. The ball is oval, not round. Each team contains 15 players. The oldest game of football in England is probably the football match which takes place at Ashburn on Shrove Tuesday every year. The game starts in the centre of the town, and the distance between two goals is two miles. The only rule is not to use motorcycles, cars and lorries in the game. In 1958 one team buried the ball. The other team didn't know and ran after them

Folk etymology = popular etymology Folk’ or ‘popular’ theories (i.e. the thoughts of ordinary non-academic people) about the origins, forms, and meanings of words, sometimes resulting in changes to the words in question. (Examples: rosemary, cutlet, crayfish, island, nickname, newt, cherry, pea) For example, one frequently repeated “folk etymology” is that the expression rule of thumb derives from a medieval law that restricted wife beaters to a stick no bigger round than the thickness of their thumbs. It makes for a sensational story, but has no truth in it. Professional etymologists use the term folk etymology to describe the process by which an unfamiliar word is altered through use to resemble a more familiar word. Folk etymologies result from mishearing, mispronunciation, misunderstanding, and a desire to rationalize words that make no sense to the speaker.

Challenges of childrens participation A Case Study of active citizenship in Cadle Primary School

children`s active participation both in the Welsh Government and the County and Council of Swansea as they both have regarded the UNCRC on the basis of all its activity. Finally, the Cadle Primary School in Swansea has been used as a case study to investigate the potential change in attitudes in children after the school placed the UNCRC at the heart of its ethos and curriculum across all areas of the school. The primary goal is to critically analyse the commitment of the Cadle towards children`s participation within school and explore the possible spaces created for children that allow them to actively engage with meaningful discussions on the matters that concern them. 3 Introduction Children have `somewhat tenuous relationship to citizenship` as a number of authors interested in children`s citizenship have noted

1. STYLE The term "style" is polysemantic (has many meanings): a Latin word "stilus" originally meant a writing instrument used by ancient people. Already in classical Latin the meaning was extended to denote the manner of expressing one's ideas in written or oral form. Jonathan Swift defined style as "proper words in proper places". In present day English the word "style" is used in about a dozen of principle meanings: 1. the characteristic manner in which a writer expresses his/her ideas (e.g. style of Byron) 2. the manner of expressing ideas, characteristic of a literary movement or period 3. the use of language typical of a literary genre (e.g. the style of a comedy, drama, novel). 4. the selective use of language that depends on spheres / areas of human activity (e.g. style of fiction, scientific prose, newspapers, business correspondence, etc.). If a country is ruled by a dictator, it simply means that the dictator is bigger than all the laws of the country. Reign vs. Rule • Reign is used more for the time period during which a king or queen rules a territory (reign of Queen Victoria). In this sense, it is a noun. When reign is used as a verb, it reflects the authority or supremacy of the king or the emperor (King Edward reigned). This is where reign becomes a synonym of rule. • Rule is a guideline or code of conduct to be followed in a place or situation, but it is also used to reflect the authority or domination of a person as in rule of the dictator or king. • Thus, one should reign when talking about the duration or time period during which a king sat on the throne of a place. The royal prerogative A series of historic powers officially held by the Queen that have, in reality, been passed to politicians. • They enable decisions to be taken without the backing of, or
