Exceptional items are to report , for example the cost of closing a particular operation, but fortunately this doesn’t happen very often. Ofc, we pay tax on our profit, and it’s called corporation tax. From the profit after tax, we usually pay dividends to shareholders, and you can see the figure for dividends per share . When business is bad, we may not do this – we may pass , omit or skip the dividend . Profit after tax is also referred to as earnings. We keep retained earningssome of the profit to invest in our future activities. In terms of earnings per share(EPS), even if some of these earnings are retained kept by the company and not paid out in dividends.

This feature highlights the experiences of individuals who have read Influence, recognized how one of the principles worked on (or for) them in a particular in- stance, and wrote to me describing the event. Their descriptions, which appear in the "Reader's Reports" in each chapter, illustrate how easily and frequently we can fall victim to the influence process in our everyday lives. There are now twice as many firsthand accounts of how the book's principles apply to business and personal lives. An array of people deserve and have my appreciation for their aid in making In- fluence possible. Several of my academic colleagues read and provided perceptive comments on the entire manuscript in its initial draft form, greatly strengthening the subsequent versions. They are Gus Levine, Doug Kenrick, Art Beaman, and Mark Zanna. In addition, the first draft was read by a few family members and friends-

names, words, and syllables. This list, originally just of names, gave the system its name: nomenclator. Even though late in its life some nomenclators grew larger than some modern codes, such systems are still called "nomenclators" if they fall within this historical period. An odd characteristic is that nomenclators were always written on large folded sheets of paper, whereas modern codes are almost invariably in book or booklet form. The commercial code is a code used in business primarily to save on cable tolls; though some are compiled for private firms, many others are sold to the public and therefore provide no real secrecy. Most ciphers employ a key, which specifies such things as the arrangement of letters within a cipher alphabet, or the pattern of shuffling in a transposition, or the settings on a cipher machine. If a word or phrase or number serves as the key, it is naturally called the keyword or keyphrase or keynumber. Keys

Christopher Vogler The Writers Journey

Power flows in those rooms like hot lava, and until I worked at Fox 2 0 0 0 I had only heard it rumbling. Now I was standing hip deep in it. It was the most adult environment I had ever been in, run on unspoken but rigorous principles of personal responsibility. N o whining allowed, no excuses. And the same fierce intensity was applied to the stories. Every concept, every comment, every suggestion had to pass the most stringent tests of common sense, logic, and show business instinct. I had the good fortune to work with some of the best story brains in the business, foremost among them being Fox 2 0 0 0 ' s founder Laura Ziskin, but also many talented executives, writers, directors, and producers. In this exacting laboratory I learned useful techniques for analyzing stories, ways of looking at characters and describing story situations that I hope will inform the new sections of this revised edition.
