prevent further grass growth. Prior to European settlement aboriginal land use practices, including fire, influenced vegetation and may have maintained and modified savanna flora. It has been suggested by many authors that aboriginal burning created a structurally more open savanna landscape. Aboriginal burning certainly created a habitat mosaic that probably increased biodiversity and changed the structure of woodlands and geographic range of numerous woodland species. It has been suggested by many authors that with the removal or alteration of traditional burning regimes many savannas are being replaced by forest and shrub thickets with little herbaceous layer. The consumption of herbage by introduced grazers in savanna woodlands has led to a reduction in the amount of fuel available for burning and resulted in fewer and cooler fires. The introduction of exotic pasture legumes has also led to a reduction in the need to burn to

Over half of the Estate is let to farm tenants, the remainder being farmed in hand or used for forestry (the Estate has its own sawmill). There are also two studs, a fruit farm and a country park. These, together with the house's gardens, employ over 100 full-time staff. Sandringham Country Park, open free all year since 1968, is an area of 250 hectares (over 600 acres) of carefully managed woodland and heath. It has two nature trails and camping and caravan club sites. A Visitors' Centre with gift shop and restaurants is open daily in summer and at weekends in winter. The unofficial anthem of Australia is `Waltzing Matilda'. It tells a story about a swagman, who has named his sleeping blanket Matilda. He is chased by police for stealing a sheep which he wanted to eat. The swagman doesn't want to be punished, so he jumps into a billabong and drowns. The golden wattle was proclaimed the official national floral emblem in 1988. It is a spreading shrub or a small tree, which grows in the under storey of open forest, woodland and open scrub in South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Green and gold were proclaimed Australia's national colour by the Governor-General in 1984. Before the proclamation, Australia had no official colour, although three colour combinations traditionally had a claim to be Australia's national colours: red, white and blue; blue and gold; and green and gold. These fences didn't work so in 1946 the government built a single fence which stretched 5400 km from Great Australian Bight in South Australia to near the Queensland coast. The single fence worked better. Lyrebirds are covered with brown feathers. They live in forests and woodland in Australia. They eat insects, spiders, beetles and worms. Male lyrebirds can copy many sounds. Lyrebird gets its name because of the tail of the male bird. It is shaped like a musical instrument called a lyre. There are 2 species of lyrebird, the superb lyrebird, about the size of a rooster, and Albert's lyrebird, which is the smaller of the species. Lyrebirds have mostly brown feathers and although they have wings, they don't often fly.

the west. Farther west are the bushlands. The real deserts occupy the centre of the Western Plateau. In the very south west there are thin forests of evergreens trees. Australia is the driest inhabited continent, the flattest, and has the oldest and least fertile soils. Only the south-east and south-west corners of the continent have a temperate climate. The northern part of the country, with a tropical climate, has vegetation consisting of rainforest, woodland, grassland, mangrove swamps and desert. Climate is highly influenced by ocean currents, including the El Niño southern oscillation. 4. Land regions Mountains The Great Dividing Range runs along the Pacific ocean. These mountains are very old and much of worn down but the Australian Alps are the highest of them. The highest top Mount Kosciusko is 2228 metres above sea level. It was named by the Polish explorer Count Paul Strzelecki in 1840 in honour of the

captured and stored, these combustion products are usually released to the atmosphere, returning carbon sequestered millions of years ago and thus contributing to increased atmospheric concentrations. The vital difference between biomass and fossil fuels is one of time scale. Biomass takes carbon out of the atmosphere while it is growing, and returns it as it is burned. If it is managed on a sustainable basis, biomass is harvested as part of a constantly replenished crop. This is either during woodland or arboricultural management or coppicing or as part of a continuous programme of replanting with the new growth taking up CO2 from the atmosphere at the same time as it is released by combustion of the previous harvest. This maintains a closed carbon cycle with no net increase in atmospheric CO2 levels. Within this definition, biomass for energy can include a wide range of materials. The realities of the economics mean that high value material for which there is an alternative market,

eksootiliste taimede vastu, mida oli Briti saartele toodud üle kogu maailma. Need huvid kombineerusid tema ettepanekutes taimeistutusteks nn gardenesque ehk aednikustiilis. Loudon soosis ringikujulisi peenraid - tüüpi, mida võib tänini näha nt Greenwich Park'i lilleaias.
