SPORT In English the word ‘sport’ describes both casual play and the highest levels of performance. Recent surveys reveal that 10% of adults play sports more than twice a week, the majority of the British population involves in sport or physical recreation at least once a month. Most people have an interest in some sports as a player, spectator or gambler, but everybody in Britain seems to be fond of outdoor exercise, be it jogging, walking, rambling or just sitting on the bench outdoors. As British homes are rather cool in winter (at least for Estonians!), the saying goes that ‘the English like fresh air outdoors and indoors’.

British Cuisine Some people criticize English food. They say it's unimaginable, boring, tasteless, it's chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. The basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavour that British haven't had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh pees or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream and spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious? If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say "Fish and chips" then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England

Main Sights England is known for its many world-famous sightseeings and people all around the world come to see them. Some of them are even like symbols of England. The most famous ones are: Stonehenge is one of the greatest national icons of Britain. That prehistoric monument is located in the plain of Salisbury, in the county of Wiltshire in the south-west of England. It is built of 150 enormous stones which are set in a purposive circular pattern. Stonehenge was probably built to mark the longest and shortest day of the year because it lies on the line of the midsummer sunrise and the midsummer sunset. That would have enabled people to keep a record of changing of seasons. Although it is still unclear who built it. Hadrian’s Wall is an ancient wall which was built in 2nd century by Hadrian, the emperor of Rome from AD 117 to 138, and it marked the northern border of the Roman Empire in Britain. The wall was 80 Roman miles (117 kilometres) long and it is situated in northern

1. Ancient Britain: the Celtic tribes. 2000 years ago there was an Iron Age Celtic culture throughout the Br Isles. It seems that the Celts, who had been arriving from Europe from the 8th cent BC onward, intermingled with the peoples who were already there. The Celts were extremely talented people, creative and artistic. More than 1 Celtic tribe invaded Br. The descendants of ancient Celts live in Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Ireland. They lived in primitive society. Druids priests, more powerful than chiefs. Acted like prophets. 2. Stonehenge From prehistoric period. Was built on Salisbury plain between 2500 and 1500 bc. English literature from the Baroque to the Romanticism

English literature from the Baroque to the Romanticism 1. The Jacobean Masque The development of the cultural scene in England brought about the Jacobean masque. The courtly culture became gradually more distant and isolated from the public. Ben Jonson was to become the poet who would write masques for the court. He would, in his masques, try to represent the idea of kingship as it resided in the Platonic realm, and not its reality. Jonson’s aim was also to be educative. Inigo Jones, Jonson’s collaborator, was the one to revolutionize in the field of visual perception, also adding moving machinery and a manipulation of artificial light to the scenery. Jones also viewed the masque as something to be used in educating people. This idea of art as an educative vehicle soon affected all the different areas of courtly life. Jones’s masque
