of Bath (a widow from Bath), the Innkeeper. At first, each pilgrim was to tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back; the innkeeper would give a good meal and a night at the inn to the best storyteller. Altogether 144 stories, GC only managed to write 24 before his death. It is studied as a faithful reflection of 14th century life in England. GC was amused by his own characters and rarely criticises them sharply; shows a very deep understanding of human motivation. His comments reveal his profound understanding of the social problem of his day. o The Prologue paints the setting of the story. Introduces each character (30). GC himself functions as the narrator. He tries to be objective and tries to keep

Old Tallinn

in 1346. The Swedes came next in 1561. Tallinn weathered plague and the Great Northern War and became part of Russia in 1710. In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia. Independence didn’t last long, however, and the fledgling nation fell first to the Nazis and then the Soviets during World War II. Despite all this conquering, Tallinn’s historic core has survived remarkably intact. Much of the 14th century city wall still stands, including a couple of stretches where you can climb the narrow spiral staircases of the towers and end up on the medieval catwalk. The Viru Gates, flanked by thin pointed towers from the 14th century, makes a nice entrance into Old Town. Dominating the town atop Toompea Hill is Toompea Castle and Pikk Hermann Tower. It was used as the center of government since 1229 and is now the site of Estonia’s parliament

The Great Guild/Suurgild

The Great Guild Liisbeth Kallakmaa The Great Guild Medieval Tallinn's social institutions were guilds and brotherhoods, whose main function was to provide members with social interactions and ensure their rights, but also played an important political and economic role. Tallinn had three important guilds - The Great Guild, St. Canute's Guild and St. Olaf's guild. The Great Guild was the youngest among them, founded in the 14th century, but soon became the biggest and most important. It was founded as an organization of the wealthiest merchants and shipowners. The name of the Great Guild was introduced in the late 15th century. There were close ties between the guild and the town rules: only members of the Great Guild had the right to belong to the town council and could be elected for mayor. Tallinn's small coat of arms is also the Great Guild's coat of arms. Guild was led by

marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions he had him put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor's daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first 'valentine' himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it 'Your Valentine', words still used on cards today. Probably we'll never know which of the versions the right one is. Traditions Weeks before the 14th February, shop windows are decorated with red paper hearts, red streamers and boxes of chocolates. People bake heart-shaped cakes. Many couples go dining to restaurants. On Valentine's Day people give each other presents and flowers. Young people make beautiful cards and give them to friends. Needless to say, it's particularly young people who looked forward to St. Valentine's Day, hoping to receive many cards. Originally

The Historic Centre (Old Town) of Tallinn

The Historic Centre (Old Town) of Tallinn is an exceptionally complete and well-preserved medieval northern European trading city on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The city developed as a significant centre of the Hanseatic League during the major period of activity of this great trading organization in the 13th-16th centuries. The combination of the upper town on the high limestone hill and the lower town at its foot with many church spires forms an expressive skyline that is visible from a great distance both from land and sea. The upper town (Toompea) with the castle and the cathedral has always been the administrative centre of the country, whereas the lower town preserves to a remarkable extent the medieval urban fabric of narrow winding streets, many of which retain their medieval names, and fine public and burgher buildings, including town wall, Town Hall, pharmacy, churches, monasteries, merchants' and craftsmen' guilds, and the...

East of Europe. The island of Saaremaa is a 2-hour drive from the capital Tallinn, by rental car, taxi or public transport. During summer 2005, you have a possibility to reach Oti Manor by taking a flight from Finland (Helsinki Vantaa Airport) or from Sweden (Stockholm Arlanda Airport) to Kuressaare, where you can rent a car. Oti Manor is less than an hour drive from Kuressaare. HISTORY The oldest manor in Saaremaa, Oti (Peudorf in German) was privatized already in the beginning of the 14th century. In these populated and fertile areas, the first fiefdoms were created. The first information concerning Oti manor dates from the year 1309. It seems that in Saaremaa this manor was in the possession of the Order of Teutonic Knights and, until the Jüriöö uprising, the economic unit of Pöide Order castle.

The Railway Station project was compiled in St Petersburg and its grandeur stressed the importance of Haapsalu as a summer town hosting the crowned heads of Russia. · The Ridala Church, erected in the 13th century, is one of the bestpreserved Middle Ages churches, built in the characteristic Western Estonian onenave style, in the whole of Estonia. There are fragments of the ceiling paintings (probably from the 14th century), a Baroquepulpit (1656, E. Thiele) and an altar preserved in the Church. · The Germans built the Lihula Stronghold in 1242. In 12341251 Lihula was the center of the Diocese of SaareLääne. The Stronghold together with the settlement formed next to it was destroyed in the Livonian War (15581583). On the ruins if the stronghold there is a singing ground today and from here a beautiful view opens onto the surrounding area.

Middle English (1100-1500) In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy invaded England. The new conquerors brought with them a kind of French and there was a period where the lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words added. Modern English Early Modern English (1500-1800) Towards the end of Middle English the change in pronunciation started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact with many peoples from around the world and many new words and phrases entered the language. In 1604 the first English dictionary was published. For centuries there was only one access to Toompea - Pikk Jalg - but there is also another way leading up to Toompea - Lühike Jalg, which was made in the 14th century. At present Pikk Jalg and Lühike Jalg are used only by pedestrians. Until the 20th century there was no way down from the western side of Toompea except for a foot-path.
