Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie

full-time writer. His first novel, Grimus, a part-science fiction tale, was generally ignored by the public and literary critics. His next novel, Midnight's Children, catapulted him to literary notability. It is regarded by many as one of the great books of the last 100 years. This work won the 1981 Booker Prize and, in 1993 and 2008, was awarded the Best of the Bookers as the best novel to have received the prize during its first 25 and 40 years. After Midnight's Children, Rushdie wrote Shame (1983), in which he depicts the political turmoil in Pakistan. Shame won France's Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger (Best Foreign Book) and was a close runner-up for the Booker Prize. Both these works of postcolonial literature are characterised by a style of magic realism and the immigrant outlook that Rushdie is very conscious of as a member of the Indian diaspora (väljaränne Palestiinast). Rushdie wrote a non-fiction book about Nicaragua in the 1980s, The Jaguar Smile (1987).

tanner. And if we don’t, we worry that we are at risk of being the target of someone else’s body-shaming comments. Body-shaming manifests in many ways: Like Criticizing your own appearance, through a judgment or comparison to another person, Criticizing another’s appearance in front of them or Criticizing another’s appearance without their knowledge. No matter how this manifests, it often leads to comparison and shame, and perpetuates the idea that people should be judged mainly for their physical features. This leads to the question: if it has such harsh consequences, why is body-shaming so common? An example IOP (the Braintree Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program) often discuss about dealing with conflicts with peers. Why, when we are upset, annoyed, or intimidated by someone, do we default to criticizing their appearance? Insults can be a go-to defense in these situations, particularly during

What Really Matters, Is Today, Not Tomorrow

What Really Matters, Is Today, Not Tomorrow People say that you have to make plans for tomorrow. You have to think about the future. But I say that there is no time like the present. We always think we have so much time. We postpone our duties, work and responsibilities. But it is such a shame to waste time, because we never now what might happen tomorrow. Secondly, it would be much easier to do these things today not tomorrow. Everybody should live one day at a time. When life gives us a chance to explore something new and exciting and meet interesting people, we should definitely use the oportunity. I think you have to be quite spontaneous to enjoy life. It is important to appreciate the people around us. You have to let them know how much you

Books Today and Tomorrow

Books Today and Tomorrow Why is it important to read books? Do people read less books than in the past? Will people read less in the future? Books have always played a great role in our lives and reading them is highly important. It increases knowledge and expands vocabulary, which integrates to writing. Reading books makes a person more intelligent and it gives a different perspective. Nowadays people tend to read less books than they used to. The main reason for this catastrophy is the development of technology. People would rather watch moving pictures in the television than pick up an old book covered in dust. In the past, when there were no television or computers to entertain people, books were basically the only amusement. On the other hand the lifestyle of ours has gotten tremendously busy and some do not find the time to just sit back and relax by reading. With the devel...

there were none at all. It seems that the front door of your museum is very difficult to find without a map. As for more, the staff working was extremely rude! I was trying to ask for my location and how to enter the museum but all I ever heard as a reply was insulting mumble and no clear sentences. Of course, that might have been rather understandable if we were talking about a fast food place, yet in such an official place as it is the National Museum of Physic Art, it is a shame to see employees who cannot use English. It was very irritating and I wasted a lot of time making clear what problems did I encounter. As a result, I did not visit your museum and I never will. However, I do hope that you will clear out the misleading facts and improve the atmosphere art is worth the trouble and respect. I am waiting for your reply. 4 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1.25 per day. Among this group of poor people, many have problems obtaining adequate, nutritious food for themselves and their families. As a result, 820 million people in the developing world are undernourished. They consume less than the minimum amount of calories essential for sound health and growth. Socially, the lack of food erodes relationships and feeds shame so that those most in need of support are often least able to call on it. What causes hunger? Crops don't grow if there is no rain and families can't feed themselves. People who are poor can't buy food when their crops fail. They have nothing to fall back on. Conflict is another major cause of hunger. Wars destroy farms and fields. Farmers may be killed. People have to leave their homes and farms and live somewhere else. Less food is produced in times of war.

friend for having proved unworthy. For it is inhuman presumption to say of any man that he is unworthy of your friendship, just as it is to say of any woman, when you have fallen out of love with her, that she is unworthy of your love. In friendship and in love we are always humble, because we see that a free gift has been given to us; and to lose that humility because we have lost friendship or love is to take a pride in what should shame us. We have our judgments and our penalties as part of the political mechanism that is forced upon us so that we may continue to live; but friendship is not friendship at all unless it teaches us that these are not part of our real life. They have to be; and we pay men, and clothe them in wigs and scarlet, to sit in judgment on other men. So we are tempted to play this game of judgment ourselves, even though no one has paid us to do it. It is only in the warmth of

In the process of collecting thousands of stories from diverse men and women who lived all over the country—ranging in age from eighteen to eighty-seven— She saw new patterns that she wanted to know more about. Yes, we all struggle with shame and the fear of not being enough. And, yes, many of us are afraid to let our true selves be seen and known. But in this huge mound of data there was also story after story of men and women who were living these amazing and inspiring lives. She heard stories about the power of embracing imperfection and vulnerability. She learned about the inextricable connection between joy and gratitude, and how things that we take for granted, like

The Dog Fence When you think about the world's longest manmade structures, China and Great Britain (Stonehenge) spring to mind. Very rarely does the Australian continent get a mention, which is a shame, because the Dog Fence, or Dingo Fence, is the longest structures on earth. The Dingo Fence is a barrier that was built in Australia during the 1880s and finished in 1885.This fence was built only on one purpose: to stop dingoes (Australia’s wild dogs) from killing sheep. It is one of the longest structures on the planet, and the world's longest fence. it’s 3,307 miles long. That makes about 5,320 km. That is about two and a half times longer than the Great Wall of China

These sources got organized into footnote-like notations in the main body of the text and I kept expecting to see something the bottom of the page or, as sometimes is the case with digital editions, at the end of the chapter, but Norman or his publisher have made a decision to have them as notes at the end of the book and, as a result, I never read through them, although Norman is supplying numerous - often valuable - commentaries to the main text in them. It's a shame the book wasn't read as a hard copy or Norman's daydreaming of hypertext (p.??) wasn't incorporated into the digital edition. This formatting decision I consider a shortcoming of the book too. DOET is about to be republished in a new, updated edition this year, and should this edition include major updates to sections pertaining anticipation of the future, a lot of portions in the present edition may be forgiven - it is quite uncomfortable to read Norman's musings and fears for

difference. This difference we have to make up is usually a higher tax. In raising the tax the price of the good goes up and when price goes up demand tends to go down. As the demand keeps falling and the price keeps rising the product usually ends up off the market and filing a chapter eleven. It typically does not go that far but this is an example of what could happen. A free market is a privilege to have and it is a shame people have to take advantage of it because they do not feel the need to work hard or to go out of their way to do something for someone else. The free rider is a menace in our society and we do not need to let him take our money and put it to his use. We have found ways such as government intervention and price lids to help control the problem but we have yet to find a solution. Once a solution is found we will have fewer worries and possibly a true free market. These are very difficult

There were also two pillories the big and the small one in the square. The culprits and those who were sentenced to death were brought to the pillory. The small pillory was fixed to the wall of the Town Hall. The punishment was carried out by the hangman and his assistants and was considered a great shame and dishonour. The culprits and those who were sentenced to death were brought to the pillory. The small pillory (for smaller criminals) was fixed to the wall of the Town Hall. Both pillories were used when people were birched. The punishment was carried out by the hangman and his assistants and was considered a great shame and dishonour. The pillories were still in use in the 19th century. 72 peasants who had taken part in the disturbances of Kose-Uuemõisa in 1806, were birched in the small pillory (a number of them were later sent to Siberia). A round stone slab in the square signifies the place of the pillory. Town Hall Square was not a place of execution, but there was one exception. At the end of the 17th century a priest, being drunk in a pub, had killed the maid in anger. After that he went to the Town

He paused a moment, leaning forward in the chair, then he got up and went slowly over to fetch himself another. "I'll get it!" she cried, jumping up. "Sit down," he said. When he came back, she noticed that the new drink was dark amber with the quantity of whiskey in it. "Darling, shall I get your slippers?" "No." She watched him as he began to sip the dark yellow drink, and she could see little oily swirls in the liquid because it was so strong. "I think it's a shame," she said, "that when a policeman gets to be as senior as you, they keep him walking about on his feet all day long." He didn't answer, so she bent her head again and went on with her sewing; bet each time he lifted the drink to his lips, she heard the ice cubes clinking against the side of the glass. "Darling," she said. "Would you like me to get you some cheese? I haven't made any supper because it's Thursday." "No," he said.

Do not, as some ungracious pastors do, Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven; Whiles, like a puff'd and reckless libertine, Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads, And recks not his own rede. LAERTES O, fear me not. I stay too long: but here my father comes. Enter POLONIUS A double blessing is a double grace, Occasion smiles upon a second leave. 28 LORD POLONIUS Yet here, Laertes! aboard, aboard, for shame! The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail, And you are stay'd for. There; my blessing with thee! And these few precepts in thy memory See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act. Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar. Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel; But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new-hatch'd, unfledged comrade. or thrown himself, in front of the moving train. Vronsky gives the man's widow 200 rubles to impress Anna. Yet something is strange about this scene. It seems to be a foreshadowing of events to come. Also, it instantly puts a dent in the passion growing between Anna and Vronsky. Most importantly, it associates something entirely negative with Anna's arrival in Moscow: death. Finally, at the home, Anna convinces Dolly to forgive Stiva. She tells her about Stiva's shame and remorse (all lies she makes up to save the marriage) and tells Dolly that she is the most important thing in the world to Stiva. Anna, it appears, is very manipulative, a trait that would make most people hesitant to trust her. When Dolly and Stiva reunite, Anna goes to see Kitty. Kitty instantly confides in her, telling her about Vronsky and an upcoming gala. She insists Anna come along, telling her that she should wear lilac. Anna indeed goes to

sensational story, but has no truth in it. Professional etymologists use the term folk etymology to describe the process by which an unfamiliar word is altered through use to resemble a more familiar word. Folk etymologies result from mishearing, mispronunciation, misunderstanding, and a desire to rationalize words that make no sense to the speaker. Here are a few examples of words that have been altered by the process of folk etymology: shamefaced: OE scamfaest, “restrained by shame.” The element “fast” had the sense it has in this sentence: The prisoner was made fast by chains. The OE spelling changed to shamefast, meaning “bashful,” i.e., restrained by feelings of embarrassment.” Since “fast” no longer made sense to speakers in that combination, the spelling was rationalized to shamefaced. A bashful person frequently goes red in the face.

It also stated his intentions for the inheritance. If the child were a girl, the money would go to her unconditionally, and if it were a boy, it would receive it as long as it did not commit an illegal act. Monks and his mother burned the letter along with the will. After hearing about his daughter's shame, the military man changed his name and took the girls to Wales. Agnes however, fled her father and walked to London. The military man soon died leaving the other girl child to a poor family there. This child was Rose. "Ah, something you like about me. Is that a general like of the overall package? Or just the clothes? Only the sweater? Or maybe it's the pants?" The edge to his tone rubbed me the wrong way. "And if I say it's just the sweater?" "I'll buy a dozen and wear them every damn day." "That would be a shame." "You don't like the sweater?" He was pissy, his words coming clipped and fast. My hands flexed restlessly in my lap. "I love the sweater, but I also like the suits." He stared at me a minute, and then nodded. "How was your date with B.O.B.?" Oh hell. I looked away. It was a lot easier talking about masturbation over the phone. Doing it while squirming under that piercing blue stare was mortifying. "I don't kiss and tell."

Writers such as Frances Trollope, Walter Savage Landor, and Charles Dickens expressed scorn that the new nation could so passionately point to their revolutionary heritage of liberty and equality while allowing the enslavement of more than half a million black slaves in the South. Others, such as the author of the anonymous 1852 novel Uncle Tom in England, which was published months after Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic Uncle Tom's Cabin, sought to shame the United States by unfavorably comparing the social hierarchy in America to that in Britain. After slavery in North America was made illegal in 1863, English abolitionist literature all but came to an end. Although this genre of writing has sometimes been criticized today for its own brand of racism and imperialism, it certainly had great influence in expressing and rallying popular support for the end of slavery in the Western world

For the most part, however, there is a genuine distaste for an individual who fails to conform to the dictates of the re- ciprocity rule (Wedekind 8{ Milinski, 2000).2 Moocher and ingrate are unsavory labels to be scrupulously shunned. So undesirable are they that people will some- times agree to an unequal exchange in order to dodge them. In combination, the reality of internal discomfort and the possibility of exter- nal shame can produce a heavy psychological cost. When seen in the light of this cost, it is not so puzzling that, in the name of reciprocity, we will often give back more than we have received. Neither is it so odd that we will often avoid asking for a needed favor if we will not be in a position to repay it (De Paulo, Nadler, 8{ Fisher, 1983; Greenberg 8{ Shapiro, 1971; Riley 8{ Eckenrode, 1986). The psychological cost may simply outweigh the material loss.
