Should smart devices be banned in the classroom? Now days smart phones are inseparable part our lives, we can see them everywhere. Students have them all over the world. The disadvantages of banning smart devices are several. Cellphones can be very useful if used for the right purposes. When smart devices are banned then students can’t use their smart phones for looking up information, or knowing what homework is and can’t use them for dictionaries or calculators. The advantages of banning smart devices are more than advantages. When tabs, smart phones or computers are banned then also students could not cheat on a test by looking for information on the Internet and they could not get distracted on their devices by being socially active by texting on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or playing games. In my opinion of banning smart devices is a good idea because students will be a more alert to be aware of the teacher

They're used with definite article and a collective meaning. Conversion is very productive because Engl is an analytical lg, the paradigms are simple and yet conversion is not absolutely productive. Traditional conversion is registred in the dictionaries. Occasional conv. takes place when writer wishes to be original. (nt, to brandy, to hm). How do I know which word is the result of conversion? (nt, paper, to paper)Compare the number of menaings of both words. Paper (noun) has several meanings but to paper has only one. So the verb has been converted from the noun. The official language of Jamaica is English. However, Jamaicans also speak an English-African creole known as Jamaican Patois. Patois is known widely as a reuslt of its musical influence and rhythm in the words of the language and lyrics of Reggae music. Jamaican is quite similar to English. Jamaican is still viewed today as bad or poor English. The written language can never be judged as right or wrong because there are no grammatical rules. There are no tools like dictionaries because Patois is not considered an official language. Some examples of the differences in spelling of common words are below: English: thing Patois Variations: t'ing, ting English: nothing Patois Variations: nutten, not'n, notin' English: no Patois Variations: nuh, noh, nu English: I am leaving today Patois: Mi a-go lef today Conclusion Jamaica has mixed economy and culture. ize to make emphasize CHAPTER 5 IMPORTANT VOCABULARY BUILDING TOOLS THE DICTIONARY For students of English as a second language, a good English dictionary is essential. It is a source of valuable information and if it is used correctly, the dictionary will serve as a useful tool toward your goal of English fluency. There are many types of dictionaries that a student may consider, including collegiate learner's, unabridged, and bilingual dictionaries. For more advanced students, collegiate or college dictionaries are preferred. In addition to the standard word entries, collegiate dictionaries often contain sections with abbreviations, foreign expressions used in English, and biographical listings. Some also contain geographical listings. Learner's dictionaries are highly recommended. This type of dictionary is written specifically for
elevated. E.g you lives, knowest, he, she, entereth, knoweth. Past tense: hadst, didst. 10 Expressiveness of word-building Words may become expressive due to their more morphological structure. Together with the adjectives, this suffix may produce words e.g brown-brownish, that denote a small degree of some quality. Also the suffix may form tactful words that are not found in dictionaries, if the speaker doesn't wish sound too categorical. E.g the lecture was dullish, she came lateish. With nouns +-ish, we get adjectives with a negative contemptuous colouring e.g childish, sheepish. This negative is even stronger with compounds e.g honeymoonish (exception: boyish, girlish do not have any negative connotation). When ish is added to proper names, it adds an uncomplementary colouring e.g mark twainish characters (-ish +proper name)

Also, in international communication American English is usually the preferred choice as it is acceptable and easily understandable in any context from Japan to Peru. While British English, especially the Received Pronunciation, is generally viewed as some kind of a “gold standard” in education and is usually focused on in textbooks and dictionaries, it should be remembered that American English has about 10 times more speakers than the RP and thus the significance of it in the today’s world should not be underestimated. 2) Submarine sandwich is ‘a large sandwich consisting of a long roll split lengthwise and filled with layers of meat, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and condiments’ (www.ahdictionary.com). The methods of structural linguistics were most popular in 70s and 80s. Present day stylistic studies have gradually taken a more systematic course. Computer assisted stylistic analysis seems quite promising (e.g. the study of cases of disputed authorship). Although still somewhat chaotic and unorganized stylistics is a vigorous young science with wide potential and prospects. 2. INHERENT CONNOTATION Meaning of a word has: a denotation (meaning proper, we find it in dictionaries) and a connotation (an additional shade of meaning). Connotation may be a permanent part of word meaning it is then called inherent connotation. Connotation is ever present when the word is used. Adherent connotation is the shade of meaning the word requires in a particular context only. Outside this context this shade of meaning is not present. INHERENT CONNOTATION (IC) 1. The key to successful pronunciation teaching is to have our students to listen and notice how English is spoken either on audio or video or from teachers themselves. The more aware they are the chance that their own intelligibility levels will rise. The phonemic alphabet: to use or not? Many students have problems of sound and spelling correspondence, so for them it is useful to introduce different phonemes and different symbols. Another thing is dictionaries usually give the pronunciation of the words in phonemic symbols. When both teacher and students know the symbols it is easier to explain what mistake has occurred and why it has happened; we can use the symbols for pronunciation tasks and games. Students should only recognise the different symbols not to produce them. When to teach pronunciation · Whole lessons: It can make sense to work on connected speech concentrating on stress and intonation over some 45 minutes
for Franklin's son William, then the Governor of New Jersey. Noah Webster Noah Webster (October 16, 1758 May 28, 1843) was an American lexicographer, textbook author, spelling reformer, word enthusiast, and editor. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education." His "Blue-Backed Speller" books were used to teach spelling and reading to five generations of American children. In the United States, his name has become synonymous with dictionaries, especially the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in 1828 as An American Dictionary of the English Language. In 1806, Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. The following year, at the age of 43, Webster began writing an expanded and comprehensive dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language, which would take twenty-seven years to complete. Bookmarks were used throughout the medieval period, consisting usually of a small parchment strip attached to the edge of folio (or a piece of cord attached to headband). Bookmarks in the 18th and 19th centuries were narrow silk ribbons bound into the book and become widespread in the 1850s. They were usually made from silk, embroidered fabrics or leather. Not until the 1880s did paper and other materials become more common. Some large reference books such as dictionaries may have a thumb index which is a round cutout in the pages with some printing, allowing the user to see approximately where the wanted entry may be, and open the book to the appropriate section, without looking at the table of context, or index. The process of physically assembling a book from a number of folded or unfolded sheets of paper is bookbinding. 8/15 Sizes Real-size facsimile of Codex Gigas

It is a combination of sound, which suggests acoustic features of objects or actions. There are traditional cases that are registered in dictionaries (buzz, rattle, splash, squeak) More original, expressive cases combine nonce coinages (the train choo-chooed to the station, Prr-umph! A devastating crush was heard) Alliteration--the use of words that begin with the same sound in order to make a special effect, especially in poetry. It goes back to Anglo-Saxon poetry. It may convey various shades of meaning. F at the beginning may imitate blowing wind. In that case alliteration becomes onomatopoeic in quality.

The State Department's contribution of $40,000, which began on July 15, 1919, could not be legally expended within the District of Columbia, and so Yardley soon found himself moving the nucleus of a staff (largely recruited from MI-8) and the necessary paraphernalia—language statistics, maps, newspaper clipping, dictionaries—to New York City. By October 1 the organization that was to become known as the American Black Chamber was ensconced in the former town house of T. Suffern Tailer, a New York society man and political leader, at 3 East 38th Street. It stayed there little more than a year, however, before moving to new quarters in a four-story brownstone at 141 East 37th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue.
