Shaw elu ja looming, ,,Pygmalion" Inglise teatri ja realistliku draama uuendajaks sai iiri päritolu näitekirjanik George Bernhard Shaw (1856 1950). Süstemaatilist kooliharidust saamata siirdus ta 1876. aastal Londonisse, kus püüdis edutult romaanikirjanikuna läbi lüüa. Kirjutas ka kunsti- ja muusikaarvustusi, kuid pühendus hiljem peamiselt teatrikriitikale. Shaw polnud teatrihuvilisena rahul tolleaegse inglise kodanliku teatriga, kes tema arvates seisis tegelikust elust väga kaugel, pakkudes publikule vaid tühist ajaviidet. Shaw´le meeldis Ibsen. Oma essees "Ibsenismi olemus" (1891) nõudis ta, et teater peab etendama ühiskonnas olulist rolli. Tema arvates pidi pearõhu asetama kaasaja probleeme käsitlevatele näidenditele.
