Eestlane-Kes ta on ? Tihtipeale tekib küsimus 'Kes eestlane on?'. Kuid siiski saame me rääkida enamikest inimestest.

ally, Ptolemy I Soter of Egypt. In 305 BC, the Antigonids of Macedonia who were also rivals of the Ptolemies, besieged Rhodes in an attempt to break the Rhodo-Egyptian alliance. They could never penetrate the city. When a peace agreement was reached in 304 BC, the Antagonids lifted the siege, leaving a wealth of military equipment behind. The Rhodians decided to express their pride by building a triumphal statue of their favourite god, Helios. The task was assigned to the sculptor Chares of Lindos, a pupil of Lysippos himself, and twelve years (from 304 to 292 BC) were needed to complete it. The Colossus of Rhodes was not only a gigantic statue. It was a symbol of unity of the people who inhabited that beautiful Mediterranean island of Rhodes. To build the statue, the workers cast the outer bronze skin parts. The base was made of white marble, and the feet and ankle of the statue were first fixed. The structure was

Michelangelo Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian painter, sculptor, poet and architect. He was of noble birth, but was not raised by his parents. His father had him brought up by a stone carver and his wife, because his own wife was too ill to take care of the child. While living with his step-parents, young Michelangelo learned the skills that would serve him throughout his life, but his father was displeased when his son told him he wanted to be an artist, and it took much convincing for Michelangelo to be permitted to further his apprenticeship.

The statue of Zeus at Olympia

The designer was Libon of Elis and The Temple of Zeus was completed in 456 B.C. This temple followed a design used on many large Grecian temples. Though the temple was considered one of the best examples of the Doric design, it was decided that the temple alone was too simple to be worthy of the King of the gods. To remedy this, a statue was commissioned for the inerior – a magnificent statue of Zeus that would become one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The sculptor chosen for this great task was a man named Phidias. He began working on the statue around 440 B.C. When the stature was completed, it barely fitted in the temple. The first archaeological work on the Olympia site was done by group of French Scientists in 1829.They were able to locate the outlines of the temple and found the fragments of the sculpture. The fragments ate still on display today at the Louvre. The next expedition, that came form Germany in 1875, worked at Olympia for five summers

Lossi Street. The writing on the bridge, "otium reficit vires" (rest restores strength), invites one to use Toome hill as a place of rejuvenation. The bridge, designed by J.W. Krause, was built in 1814-1816 and replaced an earlier temporary bridge. The bridge was thoroughly renovated in 1913, at which time a bust-portrait of the university's first rector, G. Fr. Parrot, and a dedication text, was placed on the bridge's Toome Hill face (sculptor C. v. Wetter-Rosenthal). Toome Hill ´s larger bridge is the yellow and white, classical style. The name is thought to come from a linguistic twist - part of the hill is landscaped likean English garden and the words "English"(inglise) and Angel(ingel) are nearly the same in Estonian. Local tradition says that when crossing it, you should hold your breath and make a wish! The Devil's Bridge was built in 1913 in honour of the 300th jubilee of tsarist Russia's

The three youthful Pre-Raphaelites deliberately challenged the established view of art, drawing up a manifesto of their intentions and publishing them in the four issues of a periodical called "The Germ". They would paint direct from nature, with objective truthfulness and genuine ideas in sympathy with what was direct and heartfelt in the art of the past. The brotherhoods techniques came from the early Flemish art- especially Van Eyck. To imitate the

Need kunstnikud erinesid teistest ekspressionistidest. Viimased muutsid loodusest võetud motiivi, kuid uskusid, et see vastab nende meeleolule ja tunnetele. ,,Sinise ratsaniku'' liikmed tahtsid luua täiesti uue, loodusest sõltumatu objekti, mis vastaks nende tunnetele. Värvilaikude paigutust ei paista valitsevat mingi mõistuspärane süsteem, vaid tundeküllus. Nõnda võib öelda, et ,,Sinine

Michelangelo had walked past this street many times, but this time he stopped and looked more closely. As he walked back and forth studying the block of marble, he actually envisioned the statue of David and saw it in its entirety. ■ GREAT SUCCESS REQUIRES LONG, HARD WORK The sculptor quickly arranged to have workmen haul the block of marble to his studio some distance away. He then began the long, hard job of hammering and chiseling. It took him two solid years of work to create the rough outline of the statue. He then put his ham- mers and chisels aside and spent two more years polishing and sanding before the statue was complete. Michelangelo was already famous as a sculptor, and the news

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

Yet the theme rises inevitably again. A section from the middle of the work: Example 198. The initial idea with its spirit and taste seems to be exceptional in Estonian symphonic music. The creative thinking of Põldmäe is specifically instrumental and there is a lack of extensive breath, of a wide singing line that should be found. All appears fragile, an example from the end section: Example 199. The composer is rather a “sculptor” than a dramatist of a major form. Surely, such a long opus (18 minutes) should have been split into movements, for what we have resembles a Divertissement. The musicologist Priit Kuusk does not, however, share this opinion: The Concerto for percussion instruments is the first of its kind in Estonian music, it has won attention and received appreciation outside the Republic of Estonia. In this composition the
